Modern Afghanistan (Political RP, Characters, Broken Thread)

Postby Waztaskio » Sun Aug 10, 2014 1:03 pm

Overview

The RP will start in August of 2014, right after the election of a new president. The setting will be in Afghanistan, a country that has been invaded by the Soviets in the Cold War and the United States in modern times, giving rise to growing rates of terrorism and suffering in the region. The government struggles to keep citizens safe from the growing threats,, with the ill-equipped military to properly fight off threats and the United States leaving the region in face of Pakistans growing influence in the northern regions which threaten the sovereignty of the government. In face of the new presidential election, a new direction for Afghanistan will usure after the leaving of president Hamid Karzai. Will you fight to maintain the unity and security of Afghanistan or will you turn corrupt and use the violence for personal gain?

Be aware that we will not be sticking to the current Afghanistan cabinet, as alot of it overlaps and it will turn into a cluster if we do it, so we will merge some positions together.

Goals

This will be player driven, and as a result players shall set their own individual goals.

Is the Minister of Interior patriotic enough to be determined to fight of crime and terror, or pragmatic enough to bribe and let crime flurish in the nation to meet his own ambitions?

Is the Defense Minister content with modernizing the military and ending the terror threat, or does he aspire to the Presidency himself, if he can gather enough power?

Is there a cadre of politically active officers in the army that despise the old military order and wish to purge it?

A journalist with a political vendetta, willing to cross any lines to get it?

The base rule this will operate on is that no player can act in complete isolation. If a player, for example, wishes to overthrow the government and establish a communist state, he must work with other players in military or political roles to make such an attempt possible. After all, no nation is built, or destroyed, on one man alone.

Political Situation

Following the disposition of the corrupt Taliban Government, elections have been held, though with the involved role of foreign interference in politics at present. The current government consists mainly of independent party members, with the occasional concession of a ministerial position to the other political parties in exchange for support.

Politics in Afghanistan are divided into three main parties excluding the independents:
Afghan Social Democratic Party: The Afghan Social Democratic Party, more commonly known as Afghan Mellat, is a Pashtun nationalist political party in Afghanistan. Controversially, the party's leadership describes it as social democratic, but it is not recognized as such by the Socialist International.

Hezbi Islami: An Islamist organization that was commonly known for fighting the Communist Government of Afghanistan and their close ally the Soviet Union. Founded and led by Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, it was established in Afghanistan in 1975. It grew out of the Muslim Youth organization, an Islamist organization founded in Kabul by students and teachers at Kabul University in 1969 to combat communism in Afghanistan. Its membership was drawn from ethnic Pashtuns, and its ideology from the Muslim Brotherhood and Abul Ala Maududi's Jamaat-e-Islami Hezbi Islami seeks to emulate the Ikhwan militia of Saudi Arabia and to replace the various tribal factions of Afghanistan with one unified Islamic state. This puts them at odds with the more tribe-oriented Taliban.

Jamiat-e Islami: The majority of the party, the oldest Muslim political party in Afghanistan, are ethnic Tajiks of northern and western Afghanistan. It has a communitarian ideology based on Islamic law but is also considered moderately progressive. During the Soviet war in Afghanistan and the following civil war in Afghanistan, Jamiat-e Islami was one of the most powerful of the mujahideen groups.

Character Roles

The characters in this RP will be divided into three main sections: Political figures, military figures and civil figures.

Political figures - Consisting of the current government and the opposition, these people have large exposure to the public and weild significant political power and control in their parties.

President of Afghanistan - The winner of the election and current President, who is attempting to rule on shakey ground with the balance of power shifting under his feet. Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, and chief legislative officer. [TAKEN]

Minister of Finance - The figure responsible for managing the economic matters of the country and dealing with the nations debt, and internal finances.[TAKEN]

Minister of the Interior - Responsible for education, healthcare and law enforcement. Has control over the national police forces. ((EX: Merge between Interior Minister, Eductation Minister, Higher Education Minister, Chief of the National Directorate of Security, National Security Advisor, Counter Narcotics Minister, Border Affairs and Tribal Affairs Minister, and Public Health Minister))[TAKEN]

Minister of Defense - Head of the Armed Forces, with the mission to ensure the nation's security from internal rebel threats and exterior.[TAKEN]

Minister of Foreign Affairs - Responsible for maintaining relations with the nations of the world and deals with government directives concerning relations, treaties and agreements. Also responsible for promoting Afghanistans interests abroad.[NOT TAKEN]

Minister of Justice - Responsible dealing with national law, and higher courts in the land.[TAKEN]

Minister of Economic Development - Responsible for improving the internal economic growth of the country. ((EX: Merge between the Economic Minister, Trade and Commerce Minister, Agriculture Minister, and Mines Minister)) [NOT TAKEN]

Minister of National Development - Responsible for improving the internal infastructural growth of the country. ((EX: Merge between the Urban Development Minister, Rural Rehabilitation and Development Minister, Transportation and Aviation Minister, and Water and Energy Minister)) [NOT TAKEN]

Minister of Health and Human Services - Responsible for improving health and environmental protection services across the country. ((EX: Merge between the Public Health Minister, and Refugees and Repatriation Minister,)) [NOT TAKEN]

Minister of Civil Affairs - Responsible for advancement and mediation of civil disputes and order. ((EX: Merge between the Women's Affairs Minister, Communications and Information Technology Minister, and Work, Social Affairs, Martyred and Disabled Minister)) [TAKEN]

International figures - Characters who are not native to Afghanistan, but have significant political influence regardless.

US Ambassador - Due to the invasion by the United States, the US Ambassador now handles relations with the new government and often assist them in national rebuilding efforts against Terrorism. [NOT TAKEN]

Pakistan Ambassador - Due to relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan, it has been argued that Pakistan can be Afghanistans best friend or worst enemy. With border skirmishes and smuggling taking place along the two countries routes, what will happen between the two nations relations? [NOT TAKEN]

Military figures - Containing the officer corps and generals of the Afghanistan military, these men would appear to be the most powerful segment of society. This is not the case, as the generals must walk a fine line on political issues to avoid causing discontent amongst the old remnants of the Taliban and the popularity of the of Anti-Terror operations in the rank and file.

Chief of Staff of the Afghanistan Military - Responsible to the Minister of Defense, co-ordinates all military activities.[NOT TAKEN]

Commander of the Afghanistan Army - Commander of the main military formation for the rest of the country.[NOT TAKEN]

Commander of the Afghanistan Air Force - Overall commander of the air forces of the nation. [NOT TAKEN]

Commander of the Special Operations Command - Overall commander of the special army forces of the nation. [TAKEN]

Civil figures - Made up of those individuals who work outside the structures of politics and the military, these figures can exert a great deal of influence on the population, but must be wary, as offending one of the more powerful groups is a quick way to be exiled or worse. However, should civil figures develop enough popularity amongst the general public, they can insulate themselves from danger by simply being too popular to "dispose off".

Head of the Afghanistan National Police - Overall commander of the national police, responsible for dealing with all criminal activities and keeping the nation safe from crime. Reports directly to the Minister of the Interior.[NOT TAKEN]

Police chief and inspectors - responsible for solving the various criminal deeds in Afghanistan, and as of recent, assisting the Afghanistan National Army or Police with operations.

Paramilitary figures - those figures who are involved with the armed political struggles in Afghanistan.

Leader of the Taliban - By far the most powerful rebel group in the country, these bandits have for the past decade been conducting violent attacks on government installations and patrols from their bases in the southern and northern mountains and heartlands. Well equiped and organized, the group is a thorn in the side of the Afghanistan armed forces main enemy. They are rumoured to be linked to the Pakistani Intelligence Service, though no proof has emerged.[TAKEN]

Leader of the Organized Syndicate - A anti-communist drug producing organization rumored to have a base of support in lower sections of the government, the Organized Syndicate engages in assassination and terror attacks of prominent communist and anti-drug enforcements figures in Afghanistan. Despite nearly two years of criminal activity, no headway into finding either leadership figures or confirmed members has been made.[TAKEN]

In the event that all of the above roles are filled, feel free to try to create a role of your own, providing it fits the setting and can work within the framework of the RP.

Applications

I intend to try to moderate the application process very heavily, so please, take some time and make it good. The thing that will make or break this RP will be the quality of the RP in it. To that end, please only apply if you have extensive RP'ing experience as well as the time to commit to this RP.
