A Kingdom Cursed [Fantasy RP/OOC/Sign-Ups]

Postby Charellia » Mon May 26, 2014 9:17 pm

For untold centuries the wizards of the Academy lived in harmony with one another and the people of Gravidan. With the help of the wizards the Kingdom of Gravidan entered an age of unrivaled peace and prosperity. Then came the Schism. A powerful wizard by the name of Malzorrak challenged the leaders of the Wizard Academy. Malzorrack believed the Academy should allow exploration of the darker secrets of magic. When he was refused he attempted to overthrow the leaders of the Academy. He was defeated and the king banished him from Gravidan.
But Malzorrack had his revenge. In the desolate wastelands of the north he wrought a terrible curse upon Gravidan. Winters grew long, crops withered in the fields and storms battered the coasts, terrible misfortune fell upon the king and his family, chaos reigned. The once prosperous kingdom fell into ruin.

This is where your story begins. You are one of the inhabitants of Gravidan. Will you fight to restore peace and lift the curse? Will you take advantage of the chaos for your own benefit? Or are you a supporter of Malzorrack who will aid him in his quest for power? That is entirely up to you.

This is essentially a sandbox RP. While Malzorrack's Curse will be a constant factor, you do not have to deal with it directly if you don't want to. I will occasionally add in world events for characters to respond to in order to keep things interesting, but otherwise you are mostly free to do your own thing.

Rules:
1. No godmodding, etc.
2. Don’t kill other people’s characters without permission.
3. Posts must be reasonably detailed. The occasional one-liner is okay, but they should be a rarity.
4. The OP has final say on any dispute.
5. If you are using magic, be reasonable. You will not have the kind of power Malzorrak does.
Lore:
You are in no way limited to just these. You can add your own races, just include a brief description somewhere in your app.
Humans: Humans are the most populace race in Gravidan. They are just what you expect.
Elves: Elves once ruled over the whole of Gravidan before the coming of humans. Small elven communities can still be found in remote parts of the kingdom, but most elves now live on the southern islands far removed from human affairs.
Dwarves: Like elves, dwarves primarily inhabit the southern islands. However there are several dwarven settlements in Gravidan and a few can be found in most cities. Dwarves most commonly work as miners, craftsmen or smiths and their skills are highly sought after throughout the kingdom.
Orcs: Orcs are the most violent and aggressive of all the peoples of Gravidan. The primarily inhabit the desolate northlands, but since Malzorrak’s Curse began they have begun to move south, taking advantage of the chaos. Orcs are disorganized and rarely found in groups larger than ten, which is lucky for Gravidan because if they were ever to organize they would be virtually unstoppable.

These are non-intelligent fantasy creatures which inhabit Gravidan. All players are free to create their own for their characters to interact with. Presently there are none. I will add them as they are put into the game.

Magic is not limited to the wizards of the Academy. Any player can have magical ability but should not expect to be equal in power to the wizards. There are few rules, but basic magic is usually elemental (ex. a fireball) or involving simple conjuring (ex. an arrow). Magic users can expect to grow in power as the RP progresses, but not the level of Malzorrack.

Players will be free to create the geography of Gravidan as they go along. I will only provide a very general overview. Gravidan is a lush realm composed mostly of hills, plains and forests. In the south is the capital city of Urbaim on the coast of the sea. To the east of Urbaim is the Wizard Academy set on a peninsula. Further south are a collection of independent islands populated by a mixture of all races. To the north is a desolate, rocky region which is home to the orcs and to Malzorrack and his followers.

Just the independent islands. Events will mostly focus on Gravidan, but characters could visit the islands and/or originate from there.

I will probably do both. I'll control Malzorrak, but since he's so far removed from the setting of the RP he won't do much directly until later on. I'll also have my own character that I play most of the time.

Since you stated that players will be able to form the terrain of the world as they go along, would that allow for a few islands in the deep south to be home to a semi-tropical environment for my Indian inspired character to come from?

Name: Andrew
Race: Human
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Equipment: Rusty Iron sword, Rusty set of dented Iron Armour
Skills: basic fighting and swordsmanship. Can do basic smithing
Magic: (If your character has magic, give a brief description of their skill level and abilities) No Magic
Appearance: Tall, lean. Brown hair, blue eyes, average all round really, has large hands

Bio: Andrew since the day he was old enough to read, had always wanted to be a knight, he grew up in a poor family, his father a village blacksmith, his mother a stay at home mother. He had helped his father at the forge many times, learning how to work iron. On the day of his 15th Birthday, a band of marauding Orcs invaded his village, they killed most of the inhabitants, only Andrew, his family and a few others escaped. His mother and father settled into another village, trying to forget the incident. However the event was etched into Andrew's mind. He is suspicious of all orcs, even ones that try to be nice. Shortly before his 20th birthday, he found a set of Armour and a sword. Both rusty iron and the Armour dented, it was better than nothing. Well, here goes...

Name: Ophioneus "Ophion" Therin Mandragoran
Race: Human (more or less)
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Equipment: An interlocking enchanted steel whipsword named Chrysaor, fashioned in the likeness of a serpent, with scales engraved and other such features. Interlocking scale armour akin to that of a snake. Two wrist-blades. Generic stuff like clothes, money, etc.
Skills: Swordsmanship, politics, strategy, psychology, stuff like that. Knows a lot about medical things, and the human body. Some unarmed combat, though he isn't exactly a master at that.
Magic: Despite being fairly young, is highly skilled in serpent magic- including taking on serpentine qualities, summoning snakes and the like, as well as water magic. Though he is somewhat less skilled in wind.
Appearance:
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Personality:
Not entirely what you'd call neurotypical, or "sane". He believes honesty to be a naive trait held by the foolish, and trusts no one, accordingly. He can seem quite charming and friendly, though he usually only has his own interests at heart, not believing others to be capable of truly caring. He can be manipulative, though he's often just distant and overcautious. At times, he can seem emotionless, with his odd state perhaps being the cause of that. He can seem bloodthirsty violent and sadistic, though his warped mind only cares for conflict, perhaps liking losing as much as winning. However, despite his aggression and obvious blood lust in battle, he can possess a feral cunning and has a knack for quickly exploiting any opening his opponent reveals. In addition, he can be blunt and sarcastic, revealing a psychotic grin or laughing maniacally whenever he becomes excited sometimes, or eerily silent, cold and disdainful at other times. He is also very rude and quite disrespectful at times, and mockingly polite, cunning and manipulative at others.

Ophioneus is often serious, yet at the same time disdainful of others, often laughing when opponents claim that they can defeat him, unless they tie in with things he's come to fear in life. And he can often be a far cry from disdainful, being rather the opposite on other occasions. Ophioneus is often emotionally distant, refusing to allow anyone to become too close to him. He claims to love humanity, and greatly enjoys putting people in miserable or chaotic situations in order to observe their reactions. With a thorough understanding of human behaviour and tendencies, he is able to determine people's thoughts and predict their reactions with high accuracy. He is extremely talented, and puts his skills to good use.

Although Ophioneus enjoys conflict, often showing up wherever there is potential for one, he usually stays out of it, preferring to observe the fight instead of directly taking part in it. However, when provoked, he quickly puts his opponent in his place, simply proving his superiority without actually beating the other person. Therefore he is usually seen as the one starting fights, but hiding in the shadows instead of directly taking part. He ends things quickly when necessary, though he also enjoys prolonging the imminent death of his target, if nothing else but to see how it plays out, and to see how they react in such a situation, with his intent in witnessing all the variables of human behaviour that exist in the universe, as well as all the spells and magic that exist in the universe, regardless the fact that it would likely be something that would take many lifetimes to achieve. In this regard, he also wishes to achieve immortality- something which is often represented by a serpent.

Bio:
Ophioneus was born into a fairly rich family in the Kingdom of Dal Erain, bordering Gravidan, his father from one powerful noble family, and his mother from another, both of said families being in an alliance. A number of his family members are skilled with different types of magic, including his parents and siblings, with competency in such areas being a trade mark of both, ensuring Ophioneus himself had a reputation to maintain. Perceptive as he was, he was always able to tell the atmosphere in regards to how other family members regarded him, even without having to speak to them. From the start, it was clear that whilst he had an evident aptitude with Water, he didn't have the same innate skill with his father's magic, Wind. Much of his family had already had an obsession with the mystical, and his mother's side of the family were skilled water users, so it was not hard to make the decision for him delve into the things he did, including more extreme experimentation and training, since he sought to become more powerful even at that point. From his childhood days Ophioneus was identified as a genius in whatever it was that he took to doing, and a once-in-a-generation prodigy- in areas other than Wind Magic, of course. He is surprisingly knowledgeable about a considerable number of things, primarily of occult and historical nature. Some of the reasons being that he desired more knowledge and power. His fascination with conflict also leant him a proficiency with some weapons as soon as he as able to delve into that kind of area. Although he isn't exactly a master, he's proficient at martial arts. He is also fairly good at drawing and playing several instruments, and a few languages. Despite this, there was always one older sibling of his that seemed a dozen steps ahead, and had a habit of defeating him in duels, "to test the limits of his abilities and make sure he stood up to the family name".

He has attained somewhat of a reputation, mainly for his good looks and outwardly charming nature, though he was shunned by those who knew what he was really like, and plans certain to reach certain aims of his own. Many people saw him differently, and this contributed to his becoming detached from most other people. The deaths of two of his friends also contributed, as well as that of his parents at a later point. Despite having a fairly prestigious family, some elements of his childhood weren't so easy, and to put it simply; things were quite complicated. Among other things, there were always those who were jealous of his lineage, as well as those who treated him differently because of his unusual eyes.
Some people seem to find him a bit creepy at times, so the way others view him is often a mixed bag. One thing he definitely isn't regarded as, however, is a nobody. Among other oddities, his unusual eyes alone can mark him out.

He has travelled to various parts of the world, and despite some of the less profitable experiences, he has gathered some knowledge in fighting. Due to his darker experiments, an organisation or two have ended up keeping an eye on him, and information about the kinds of things he's done, and gets up to, especially regarding some previous events which he has vaguely hinted at having a hand in, regarding a large number of mysterious disappearances and deaths in a few different lands. Though these were due to his ol' villain quest for power and immortality, with experiments upon those he kidnapped being fairly nasty- though it did mean he was quite skilled medically. His rather intelligent mind insured that he has facilities, hideouts and that kinda thing in various parts of the world- though since he's fairly young- he hasn't had much time to develop and expand these yet, and so they're not as widespread as he'd like, and he always worked things out so that his secrecy was maintained, and he wasn't discovered. He also experimented on his own body, to the extent that his body has gradually taken on more serpentine aspects, including a part snake-form, as well as a full serpent form, a form which is likely his true appearance. He and his older sister, Orithyia, shared a common interest, the study of magic, however, even when young, Ophioneus was quick to apply his knowledge to rather dark ideals, studying different magics than his sister would, regardless of whether or not such things were considered taboo, and could've been the kinds of things to make him be shunned.

After his parents' deaths, he became distanced from his siblings, and became extremely interested in immortality and the study of the origin of magic. After a few years of intense study, he began to lose himself to a particular magic he found favour with; Snake Magic, which began to corrupt his body through experiments he conducted. At one point, Orithyia discovered how he was experimenting on himself, and others with a clear lack of anything resembling morality, and ended up fighting him. His older sister was about five years older than him, and a powerful sorceress to boot. Though he didn't win, he told her he'd become strong enough to rival the strongest of dark wizards, and that he would achieve immortality and power beyond the wildest dreams of the Mandragoran House.

After fleeing, and travelling on his own for the better part of a year, honing his skills. After he became competent enough, he moved on, into the Kingdom of Gravidan, planning at some point to increase his power and skills to the state that he could form a organisation of his own some time in the future, and set his plans into motion. For now, he would be a mysterious and little-known mage, maintaining secrecy in regards to his own actions and proclivities, and biding his time until the right moment.

Due to the magic he excels at, he is known by the moniker "Eternal Serpent".

Descendants of a powerful wizard of the Accademy, his family lived in the continent by hunting monsters and bandits into forest thanks to their skills developed into years, who combined the knowledge of the rangers with the magic of the academy into a single art.
Sadly, Talian is a small island, and his parents had an hard time to gain money in such a different location; things were not made easier by the elves who inhabitated it, fiercely protective in making impossible for humans to enter their forests. Name: Rajan Srivanaman
Race: Human
Age: 32
Gender: male
Equipment: A Talwar {Type of sword}, 3 Chakram, a water pouch, and the clothes on his back
Skills: Sailing, navigation, bargaining, carpentry
Magic: Has a very limited ability for light magic. He has managed to cause himself and objects to illuminate at will, however his abilities only go as far as this. He once was able to cast light into a dark room, however this was only obtained with extreme focus.
Appearance: Rajan is a man of slightly above average height, however he has lanky features, thus he attempts to compensate for this by keeping a straight and sturdy stance. His skin is the color of dark bronze, while his eyes are a greenish-gold. His hair is a rich black and his eyebrows thick. He has a huge moustache that curves slightly upwards. He has two large scars on his left side from sword slashes.

Personality: Rajan has always aimed to improve his situation in life, so much so that for most of his life, he has done nothing but try and reach that never-ending goal. He has also show a tendency to be cautious, however he has easily mustered enough boldness to carry through something if need be. To Rajan the ends justify the means, and he is willing to break his own ideals if it means survival or the advancement of his goals. Despite this he has a light heart, even if it's often hidden by a serious face. He has gained a reputation of keeping his word, a value that he himself holds serious. He does have a short fuse, and his temper is something that has lead to his current position.

Bio:
Rajan was born and raised in a small, poverty stricken village in the southern spice islands. His early life was spent working to secure the stability of the village. Like all of the children in his village, he was placed with a group to work, some groups did farming related things, some cut rock from the nearby quarries, while Rajan's group helped with repairing houses and making things like carts and barrels. This became his earliest profession, he would even take his carpentry skills to other islands in search of work and pay, though this endeavour would fail. As a child, when he wasn't working in some fashion he enjoyed to go out into the forest and explore. He was often captivated by the light fairies that, though weary of humans, inhabited the forests of his and other islands. It by interaction of these that he learned of his ability for light magic. He only practiced and studied in forests however, as he was one of only three people to have any magical ability on his whole island, the other two being elders from other villages.

Whenever the merchants from distant lands came to trade various goods for spices, he was always the first to rush and see what they had to sell. Having almost no money for much of his childhood and even into his teenager years, he was forced to either lower the merchants prices down far enough or even more commonly, trade in crafted objects for things. Once he had to promise a cart in exchange for an item, the catch was that the cart was to be made and given when the merchant returned the following trip. The merchant had no expectation of receiving the cart, as it seemed unlikely for some village boy to keep the promise, let alone remember it. To his surprise, when he returned to the island, Rajan came peddling down the hill with the cart that was owed. Once he bartered for a book on the arts of light magic for four hours with a merchant, in the end the man gave it to him for free, as was planned from the start.

This book aided Rajan with his magical abilities, it was from this that he managed to make his hand glow, an ability that, with practice, would turn from his having his hand glow into having his whole body illuminate. Despite all the knowledge and spells within the book, Rajan had difficulty even attempting them, and thus his powers are incredibly limited to this day. Regardless, the book had remained a treasured object to Rajan. At this point, he had tried several different ways of making money, all failing in the end. In a rather uncertain storm of events, Rajan decided to take a less legal route in order to enhance his economic standing. After building his own ship, Rajan turned to piracy, recruiting crew from around the spice islands.

Rajan's career as a pirate was mild for what it was. Rajan was a very generous host to those whom he captured, and he has yet to kill a single hostage, always letting them off at the nearest inhabited land. Despite this, he did become rather wealthy for a short time off the goods he stole. Still, he made major steals, even as far as attacking and successfully capturing one of the largest merchant ships in the southern sea. With this, he made a name for himself and was known throughout the pirate league of the southern sea, going as far gaining complete dominance over the waters surrounding the spice islands. His flag, an orange tiger on a light green background was avoided by merchantile shipping throughout, though if one was to be subject to piracy, they would probably want to be captured by Rajan and not a less empathetic captain.

Like all things in Rajan's life thus far, the good will come to an end. Whilst sailing close to Gravidan, Rajan got into a dispute with a crew member over the splitting of loot. Things were said, and in the end Rajan found himself surrounded and with a knife to his throat. Using what life skills he has obtained thus far, he managed to keep his blood off the deck by convincing the mutineers that the pirate league would pay much more then what his fortune was worth for his safe return and that the benefits of ransoming him far outweighed those of killing him there. To be fair, it was half true, if the pirate league payed the ransom, it would be worth it, the question was if they were going to pay, still he had seen it as an opportunity to stay alive for a short while longer. The new captain ended up ordering the ship to be careened on a beach in Gravidan, where Rajan found himself tied to a post near the tree-line of the beach. Two loyal crew members managed to smuggle his sword, a few chakram, and a water pouch to him. They broke his bonds and set him free, now Rajan has found himself on Gravidan, with no direction except survival.
