Background: During the Great War, the mighty powers of the world fought for supremacy and empire, seeking riches and glory, but finding only death and destruction. The war latest for over two bloody years (1914-1916) and saw Europe split into two warring camps: the Entente Powers of Great Britain, France and Russia against the Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria and the Ottoman Empire. In the end, the Entente Powers emerged victorious, claiming dominance and enforcing harsh restrictions upon the losers.
Although Germany had to pay reparations and had their territories dissolved, Germany was allowed to retain its monarchy and became the German Union. Austria-Hungary and Russia, both seen as the nations that started the war, were forced to give up some territories to the newly created Second Republic of Poland. The Ottoman Empire, unable to survive the political turmoil following the war, suffered through a violent civil war and dissolved into the Republic of Turkey where it saw its territory carved into spheres of influence by the Entente Powers.
France emerged the major “winner” of the war, after having vanquished its historical foe (Germany) and establishing hegemony over western continental Europe. In a period of post war boom, the French economy nearly doubled in size, challenging the British for leadership in Europe. This friction between wartime allies only worsened during the Great Depression as all nations scrambled for an economic advantage on the intentional stage.
The 1930s saw the rise of fascism in Europe as the governments proved unable to control the rampant poverty and desperation that was typical of the decade. Fueled by nationalist fervor and traditional tensions, France tested it newfound might against Spain in the Second Franco-Spanish War. Spain proved unable to stand up against the industrial and military might of France even with the support of the UK. In 1939, Spain capitulated as Madrid fell to the French. Catalonia and the remaining Spanish empire were absorbed into an ever growing France and monarchist Spain was replaced with a fascist French puppet.
The UK, outranged and threatened by French actions in Spain, withdrew from the Entente cordiale and aligned with its former enemies in the Central Powers. Facing fear of aggressive nations, Poland, Turkey, and China joined the Central Powers in attempt to get British and German support in case of war. That same year France signed the Pact of Steel with Mussolini’s Italy, Russia and Japan to form the Axis Powers. France then turned it ambition to the Lowlands, seeking to re annex culturally tied Belgium and presenting an ultimatum to the Central Powers: to cede Belgium or face war; and thus the stage is set for the most devastating war in human history. Brief History from WW1: After the Great War, the British Empire felt that peace will finally come to Europe. However, the British Empire soon felt threatened by a powerful French Empire after France took control of Spain in the Franco-Spanish war despite British support of Spain. In outrage of the French conquest, the British Empire withdraw membership from the Entente and re-established the Alliance with the Germany, Austria-Hungary, Poland, and China. In response to the French demand for Belgium, the British Empire mobilized the military in preparation for war.
