UNSTABLE

The year is 2053. In 2017, an asteroid struck the planet. This asteroid brought hell on earth. The atmosphere was nearly destroyed, and so people had to move underground. Europe has 'gone dark', due to the fact it was where the asteroid struck. No one knows if anyone in europe is alive or not. Earth is slowly losing habitability, and becoming harder and harder to live on as time goes on. The moon was shattered and turned into rings in the sky at night. Floods are no longer uncommon, regardless of area. Earth is dying. Earth has become... Unstable. Scientists have discovered that Mars is now somehow beginning to form into a new earth-like planet, and everyone is racing to get to Mars before Earth dies.

Nation Name: The Union of East-America (UEA)
Government Type: Unionized Democracy; a new form of Government created by the Union. It states that only people selected by the Government may run, even if those people have served many terms before.
Underground/Above Ground: Underground.
Population: 200,000,000.
Military: 10,000 Peace-time, 700,000 War-time.
History: The UEA was founded by President George Flynn of Virginia. The UEA was founded around two years after the asteroid struck and the world went to hell. He sponsored programs that built the underground mega-cities that formed what the UEA is today. The UEA did not merge with the West as the West didn't agree with the Union's "Unionized Democratic System". The UEA's mega-cities are all connected via tunnels, which use bullet-trains. The UEA has put most of it's funding into space technology, and trying to get to Mars, and so their military is weak in technology but strong in numbers.

History: Born in a military coup in 2018 by Japanese hyper-nationalists in the Japanese Army, the new Tokugawa Shogunate reinstated the old practices of feudalism and isolationism. Forcibly expelling foreigners, the Shogun built many underground cities underneath the old cities of Japan, barring non-Japanese people from entering the safety of the Shogunate's underground havens. He had a series of underground tunnel systems built to connect the cities and islands of the Shogunate, doing everything in his power to ensure that his new Japan would be able to run smoothly despite the worsening weather. Instilling nationalistic fervor in the Japanese peoples, he inspired his people to work hard to build a society somewhat sustainable despite the dangerous weather while funding promising scientists to research ways to get to Mars. Since then, western culture has been brutally suppressed in Japan and non-Japanese people have been either deported or killed. The state focuses heavily on science, doing everything in it's power to find ways to get to Mars, spending the majority of it's budget on scientific research.
