Pedal to the Metal [OOC/Always OPEN]

Postby Rupudska » Sun Jan 26, 2014 4:47 pm

THIS IS THE IC waagh
Foreword waaagh

Good evening, boys and girls of P2TM. Are you looking for a good old-school post-apocalyptic RP, just without all that modern nuclear fallout and mutations crap? Are you longing for a rude tale of guts, guns and gasoline set in the future of the ol' US of A, where civil society has almost collapsed and motorized bandits rule the highways, and new countries and nations daily rise and fall, squabbling with each other for the control of food, water, munitions, guns...and gasoline.

Wonder why I'm mentioning gas (petrol for our Commonwealth friends) so much?

Because this RP is about gasoline. And cars fueled by gasoline. And badass people driving said cool cars into deadly motorized battles on the roads of post-apocalyptic America, shooting the shit out of bandits and other marauders and spending nights brawling with other drivers in truck stops.

Ever heard of Mad Max? Basically, that, but IN AMERICA.

Oh yeah, credit to Agri for the idea and major worldbuilding work, and 99.9% of the OOC before the Republic of Texas section.

Introduction waaagh

A few years from now, the whole world went into the gutter: economical recessions, environmental disasters and assorted wars and calamities proceeded to fuck the shit out of pretty much everyone. The USA was amongst the hardest hit countries and, after a few disastrous presidencies, feelings of secession and revolt against the federal government were pretty much widespread in the whole nation.

As a result of rising crime rates, violent attempts at secession and continuous riots, the US Government eventually instituted Martial Law as a last resort option, hoping to curb down the oncoming wave of societal chaos. This plan was quickly shot down by something that no one expected: a solar flare of massive proportions, heralding the arrival of a Coronal Mass Ejection. All the electronic systems of the world were quickly shut off. Hundreds of ill people died when their life support was cut off, thousands more died in the resulting airplane crashes, and millions were left without food or drinkable water. All the modern channels of communication died, while the Federal Government and the rest of the world struggled to survive such a crisis.

Electronic systems started working again a few years later, but it was too late: the USA was now divided into several, rivalling small states, with the less inhabited areas of the country turning into massive, lawless wastelands chock full with small villages trying to survive the post-Flare world and raiders mounting assaults on villages and trading routes. This era saw the rise of new nations, like the New Confederacy, the Theodemocracy of Deseret, the People's Republic of Cascadia, the independent Republic of Texas and many others, while the Federal Government was reduced to Washington and part of the East Coast. Canada and Mexico saw a similar fate.

A few decades after the Flare, the successor states of the US and various mercenary and raider gangs duel with each other for the control of the great interstate highways, which have become the most important transportation ways and trade routes in the whole of the former United States. Cars are the main tools of war in these peculiar conflicts: modified to exceed their factory capabilities and function as mobile weapons platforms, automobiles are now seen as an essential tool of survival in an unforgiving and individualistic world.

This RP will focus on a group of drivers-for-hire, mercenaries skilled in the use of combat vehicles, coming from all over North America to take part in a dangerous but well-paid assignment in California, which will take them on a crazy coast-to-coast trip in the post-Flare USA. Will you be one of them?

If so, hop on the ride, and take your pedal to the metal!

Geography of Post-Flare North America

Major Powers and Important Successor States

The Confederate States of America
Image
Everyone pretty much knew that the South was gonna rise again, and it eventually did a few months after the Flare hit, with the secession of several Southern states from the USA and the subsequent creation of a second Confederacy. A sizable military and economical power, the states of the Confederacy benefit from incredibly high autonomy, though still less than they did in the first Confederacy. To the point that they spend most of their time bickering with each other just as they bicker with other successor states. It doesn't help that the central government of the Confederacy is almost useless. The only thing it really controls is the military, which it does so very well indeed. The Confederate military is the most powerful on the continent, after all.

You definitely don't want to be out of the cities if you are gay, an atheist, a religious person who isn't Christian, a leftist, a Yankee, a Californian, Black, Latino, a foreigner, look foreign, dislike guns, dislike cars or dislike Lynyrd Skynyrd. And for disliking guns and cars, just don't bother entering the country. [As a side note, if you're a member of any of those groups, stick to Virginia, Florida, and South Missouri, they're the least conservative sections of the Confederacy.] They'll chase you out with pitchforks. Contrary to what one may think, blacks actually enjoy some civil rights in the CSA. Emphasis on some. Due to this, the subregion known as the "Black Belt" is infamous for its continuous insurgencies and riots against Confederate power. Richmond regularly tries to remedy this by attempting to pass various civil rights amendments to the Confederate constitution, but you can set your clock to the regularity of these bills getting shot down.

The roads are generally well kept, however, leave the highways and big cities of the Appalachians and road quality decreases dramatically. Open and concealed carry of firearms on one's body or car is permitted all over Confederate territory. No major weapon restrictions of note, though military grade weaponry is somewhat regulated, more so for rocket launchers and similar weapons. However, there are no regulations at all for automobiles, which often leads to WH40K-Ork-like trucks cruising about the lowlands. And usually exploding. Crime and gangs tend to be more common in the rural zones and the highways, while the city centres have some sort of law enforcement presence.

Beware of the Appalachian backwoods: some areas are inhabited by inbreed families hostile to all forms of external civilization and with a taste for human flesh. Just like before the Flare, but with less banjos and moonshine and more eating long pork. As a side note, the Klan exists and is legal, but is kept under watch. In case they do something really stupid.
Republic of Texas
Image

The post-Flare Lone Star State is a powerhouse unto its own. Economically, it is third on the continent, behind only the Confederacy and the Nueva Republica, respectively. From a military standpoint, it is also third, behind the Confederacy and Canada.

While still socially and politically conservative, Texans as a whole are more liberal than their allies in the Confederacy, and the republic is fairly evenly divided between left and right, with the political left mostly sticking to the cities and suburbs. One thing it has that the Confederacy lacks, however, is a border patrol: The CSA's only border with a Spanish-speaking state is with Miami, whom they are on good terms with. Texas shares a border with the remnants of Mexico, and the Lone Star Nation does not have good relations by any meaning of the term with them.

Road conditions vary, but overall are good, with quality decreasing in rural areas in the northern panhandle. Gun laws are lenient, if not even more so than the Confederacy's. Notably, Texas lacks a minimum age for gun ownership.

Oh yeah, and if you're Mexican, or look in any way Mexican, stay the hell away from the Rio Grande. Texas Border Patrolmen are notorious for itchy trigger fingers and shooting first, asking questions later. With the condition Mexico itself is in these days, it's understandable.
Republic of Albuquerque
Image

The Republic of Albuquerque was, for a while, known as the New Mexican Repbulic, but this was quickly changed due to the Confederate diplomat pointing out that, if they were to keep that name, they would continue to be confused for part of Mexico. Which, despite being funny, they had long since grown tired of.

Oil and gas are major economic factors here, along with tourism, despite the eau de post-apocalyptica of some areas. It has a very high population of natives, who have bounced back out of poverty... sorta. At least they're not as bad off as they used to be. Albuquerqueans are proud of having an advance, modern military, capable of easily holding off the assaults of the Mexican cartels, who have graduated to full-blown warlord status. As an indirect result, crimes against Chicanos has slowly begun to rise, while population of them has slowly declined.

Gun laws are average here, if a little lax. Ammunition is more regulated then guns. Miniguns and rocket launchers are banned on vehicles weighing less than 2 tons for safety reasons. Road conditions are good everywhere except the southern border and in some sections of the former reservations that road crews haven't gotten to. God have mercy on the sod that breaks a law on the road, as the cops here have attack helicopters.
Theodemocracy of Deseret
Image

Deseret is the land of Mormons, salt, more Mormons, gay concentration conversion camps, and extreme speed.

A Mormon Theodemocracy, it is the antithesis of separation of church and state. Tourism is a major driver here, along with mining, energy, and general business. Deseret is very business friendly... so long as you're Christian and straight. Religious freedom is horrendous, as are civil rights as far as LGBT is concerned, on par with some pre-Flare Middle East nations. It has poor relations with the Confederacy [who sees them as taking conservatism too far] and Wonderland [who they see as sinful]

Gun laws are somewhat lax, but violence is frowned upon and most car-mounted weapons are hidden or mounted flush. More important by far is the presence of the Bonneville Salt Flats. A mecca for speed freaks, you're unlikely to find any weapons here, but you are likely to find some of best when it comes to automotive car modification. Only California and the Forge have better reputations among car gurus, and only Cascadians build faster electric cars.

Road conditions are superb. Bad roads are considered a sign of devil's work.
Principality of Wonderland
Image

The mercantile republic of sin, the Principality of Wonderland is the least conservative conservative nation on the continent.

Wonderland is practically everything Deseret isn't. Prostitution is legal, gambling is legal, separation of church and state is law and enforced, and LGBT rights are second only to Cascadia's. The government is riled in varying degrees of corruption, though this doesn't stop them from having a small, highly efficient, highly advanced military. They're even more advanced than the CSA's thanks to Groom lake, though the Confederacy is rapidly catching up. The Wonderland military mostly helps out Cascadia, which lacks a proper military.

The economy relies on two things, trade and tourism, the latter relying almost wholly on the vice trades offered by Reno and Las Vegas. Both cities have numerous casinos, bordellos, luxury resorts, and bars. Only New York has a more vibrant night life than Vegas.

Road conditions are very good, though most in the central parts of the country are in desperate need of a resurfacing. Gun laws are nonexistent.
Kingdom of Hawai'i
Image

The sun! The sea! Girls in grass skirts! A navy that conquered the Pacific! All these you will find in Hawai'i.

Tourism and exports are big in the Hawaiian economy. Resorts for the wealthy abound and are common, especially in the main islands. These, along with being the most important trade hub in the Pacific Ocean, help fuel a huge navy that has conquered most of the Polynesian islands. Civil rights are superb, on par with Wonderland's. The government is stable and among the least corrupt in the former Americas. Really, Hawai'i is probably the best place to live if you're rich.

Road conditions are good for places that have roads. Get a boat, you'll need it more. Gun laws are loose, it's ammunition that's regulated.
Democratic Republic of Cascadia
Image

Hell for Republicans. And people who don't like hipsters.

The Cascadian economic system is as Scandinavian as it can possibly get without a cross flag. Tourism, agriculture, software and aviation are the big economic drives of Cascadia. As is energy tech: They lead the Former Americas in wind and hydroelectric power, and are currently collaborating with New England and Confederate schools to develop nuclear fusion power. Military is nonexistent, instead, Cascadia has a very effective police force, comparable to Brazil's but with a Norwegian prison system.

Civil rights and freedoms are excessive. The sex and prostitution are great, in part due to having very high-quality [socialized] healthcare and the best doctors outside of Texas. As a probably likely result, relations with Deseret are chilly at best, though as Wonderland is a trade partner with both nations - but only allies with Cascadia - Deseret doesn't try anything.

Guns are banned, diesel engines are banned, road conditions are excellent overall. Watch out for electric cars with Cascadia licence plates: Thanks to a complete lack of torque lag, they'll smite you in competitions requiring heavy acceleration. And then the driver will demand you check your privilege.
Canada
Image

The Great White North, and the only nation in North America to survive the Flare with most of its territory intact.

Canada has a very diverse economy, largely dependent now on service, logging, and oil as the big three drives. Civil rights here are very good, though try to avoid praising Quebec, especially in the more rural areas - It's a very good way to get attacked in the woods. Quebec-Canadian relations are the worst on the continent, with frequent motions between the two nations for war, even though everyone knows now that Quebec could never survive a second war with the Bear of the West.

The war with Quebec started less than a month after the Flare, and lasted for a full year after the return of electronic power to the world. Having managed what the original Confederacy did not, Quebec forced the Canadians to concede that they were, indeed, free. The weakened Canadian Armed Forces could only watch as the Maple Leaf Flag descended from the Parliament Building of Quebec City for the last time. Winnipeg, Yukon, and finally Cascadia nabbed territories from a weakened Canada shortly later.

The military is large, hardy, and very well trained, as is the police force. Even the Confederates admit the Canuck special forces are probably better than theirs, if only by a little.

Road conditions vary widely. They are good near the southern cities and get progressively worse the further north you go. The 'lax gun laws' thing is a myth, though Canadian gun laws are still fairly loose.
Quebec
Image

As French as chicken bathed in $2 Mexican wine.

Canada's former largest province has a diverse economy, mostly rooted in information, aerospace, and tourism. Ferociously patriotic and ferociously claiming to be French, it's best not to speak English in a Canadian accent, though if you sound like you're from the Confederay, Texas, or the Southwest, you should be fine. Quebecois don't know they have a weak military. That's very funny to Canadians. Due in part to their terrible relations with Canada, they also have poor relations with the Union remnants, though New England is neutral towards them.

Civil rights are pretty good if you speak French. They have a reputation of rudeness towards English-speakers, thought the government is trying to correct this. Rumors abound that the Canadian government is trying to cement this reputation, though these rumors are mostly spread by people wearing tin foil and who think the Moon landing was faked and that the Flare was a Jewish Illuminati Lizardmen conspiracy.

Road conditions are usually good, though up near the Hudson Bay it's mostly gravel. Gun laws are stricter than Canada's. As are car laws: Quebec officials may or may not let you drive your car, depending on what fuel it uses and what the pollution levels are like. They're green that way.
The Yukon Federation
Image

The Great Bear didn't take all of Alaska back, and the Yukons make sure of it.

Formed shortly after the power came back on by a merger of the Yukon Territory, Alaska, and parts of British Columbia, this somewhat conservative Republic had trouble right from the start. Canada was unhappy about losing more of its territory and attempted to intervene, but the half-hearted effort wasn't enough, and they had bigger provinces to fry. Russia's attempt at conquering them, however, was much more successful. Swarming in across the Bering strait, they managed to take half of Alaska before the Yukon Army and the Canadians stopped them, the Canadians fearing that Russia would be after them next. In the cold fires of the Battle of Anchorage, an alliance was formed, and after the Russo-Yukon stalemate, relationships between the Yukon Federation and their Canadian neighbors improved significantly.

Civil rights are good, but they could be better. LGBT rights vary by region, but the fact that they cannot marry or donate blood is telling. The military is decently-sized, well-equipped, and well-trained, though if the Russians come back in greater numbers, they won't last, and either Canada or the CSA will have to step in.

Road conditions are horrid. Gun laws are few and far between, though don't try to smuggle in anything Russian besides an AK derivative, such as the AK-74. Which, ironically, is one of their most popular firearms.
Nueva Republica de California
Image

A large population of Mexicans, a diverse landscape, and the birthplace of hot rodding combine for a very interesting nation.

The collapse of the Mexico-American border led directly to the NRC's founding as a nation, and the only part of the former United States [besides Miami] with Spanish as its official language. This had... interesting effects on the culture. The Nueva Californian economy is mostly based on agriculture, tourism, electronics, and automobiles, especially the modification thereof. You will not find better builders of modified cars anywhere on the continent outside of The Forge. [Hawai'i doesn't count, as they mostly import Japanese and Korean vehicles already modified.] Politically, the nation is split down the San Andreas into left and right wing, though the government is decidedly leftist.

Civil rights are very good, comparable to Wonderland's, at least in the good parts of the cities. Rural areas tend to be more conservative, as do worse parts of the major cities. Watch out while driving in the poorer sections - City crime here is tremendous, and gang violence is very common. Try to wear neutral colors.

Road conditions are average. Gun laws are very lax, though open carry is prohibited in most areas. And for the love of all that is holy, don't antagonize the cops, if Albuquerquean cops are driving Decepticons, then the Nueva California cops are Terminator-Robocop-Jedis driving around in the Mach 5. And for the love of all that is holy, don't drive an unarmed vehicle out on the highways - even the LAPD don't venture more than a few miles past city limits.
Navajo Federation
Image

The most successful success story of former reservations becoming proper nations.

Formerly known as the Arizona Republic, the Navajo Federation has a very diverse economy, though healthcare, tourism, copper mining and trade are big. There is also a sizable car modification trade in the country, though it's mostly spillover from Nueva Republica. Crimes against Mexican-Americans are a problem, but not to the degree as they are in Texas or Albuquerque. Which is odd considering the government's left leaning. Civil rights are, unsurprisingly, rather good, about on par with Canada's.

The military here is small, though well-equipped. It's not too technologically advanced, but not too primitive.

Road conditions are decent, though much like Wonderland, most roads are in desperate need of a resurfacing. The highways are no-man's-lands, the cops here don't even bother defending people out there. Gun laws are loose and even more loosely enforced.
Federal Remnant / United States of America
Image

O, how the mighty have fallen.

The 'United' States of America were hit hard by the Flare, and rapidly fell apart. Only five states remained loyal: Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York. Even then, New York and Maryland didn't come out unscathed, parts of both went to New England and the Confederacy, respectively. It recognizes only one post-Flare nation on the continent, and that's Quebec. [This is not good for their Canadian relations, which are somewhat chilly.] The Remnant government and its citizens are, for the most part, viciously patriotic and especially anti-Confederate. However, they aren't crazy, and are willing to negotiate with the more powerful 'rebel states' as their government calls them. To a degree. They still want them back, but realize it'll take time and a lot of bribing coaxing.

The Remnant has a very diverse economy, though steel for the Forge, trade, and banking are the biggest three. Its military is large, especially for a nation its size, and patriotic. From a technological standpoint, it's an equal to the Confederacy, though obviously they couldn't beat them due to the size difference.

Civil rights are average. LGBT rights are a political football that has yet to land, at the moment, they're slightly better than in the Yukon. This doesn't improve relations with Cascadia.

Road conditions vary widely, though are usually bad. Stay out of the mountains, it's just as bad in the Remnant's Appalachians as it is in the Confederacy.
Republic of Omaha
Image

The gateway to the West, and for a while the gateway to the Yellowstone Wasteland, until the Kingdom of Cheyenne declared its independence.

A predominantly agricultural nation, it isn't considered unusual to see herds of cattle crossing the lonely highways, protected from bandits by small helicopters. Nor is it terribly uncommon to see semis pulling a mile's worth of cargo, guarded on both sides by motorcycles and/or machine gunners on the roof. In fact, such sights are common throughout most of the Midwest, and even into Denver.

And such things are needed: Raiders are a frequent and seemingly incurable problem for the nations of the northern Midwest. Be prepared for a fight if you're coming through and not packing serious firepower. The raiders are much like wolves: They believe in strength in numbers and avoid attacking things they think are bigger and stronger than themselves.

Civil rights are decent for the area, though try not to be too open about your sexuality if you aren't straight.

Road conditions are usually good, though there are a lot of gravel paths and roads leading to nowhere. Gun laws are lax, though open carry is prohibited in a number of areas, including the capital.
People's Republic of Wisconsin
Image

A bastion of socialism in a capitalist pig-dog world.

Wisconsin is a fairly typical people's republic, in that it is led by an oppressive dictator, and its only two real industries are manufacturing and agriculture, which, despite its small size, gives it a sizable economy. Enough to finance a decent small-nation military at least. Raiders are almost nonexistent due to incredibly strict border control and an Orwellian police system. What ones are here are tough as nails and not to be trifled with in any way.

One of the most unfriendly nations on the continent, it's best to just stay away if you're not from the area, not white, not straight, not willing to stay, or not willing to stay loyal to the Dear Leader. The governmental system is borderline Juche, though unlike the former North Korean state, the Wisconsin government is at least smart enough not to aggravate its stronger neighbors. This doesn't stop it from regularly harassing the Winnipeg government.

Road condition is poor, partly due to the climate, partly due to the government. Guns were banned for a while, but this ban has been lifted. Considering the nation's history, it probably means a war with Winnipeg is on the horizon.
Kingdom of Cheyenne
Image

The last nation before the Yellowstone Wasteland. It claims all of it south of the 49th Parallel, though it doesn't even attempt to control it.

This sparsely populated, sparsely policed, and sparsely paved kingdom was once part of Omaha before breaking off a little over a year after the Flare. It has struggled against the brutal attacks of raiders coming in from the Yellowstone Wasteland, though it's done well enough, even with an outdated military. Its small economy mostly depends on the few supply transport companies based here in Cheyenne, and mining. [The transport companies here are here due to tax breaks, which Cheyenne provides.]

Raiders are more common than police here, and they sometimes mix together, especially near the Gates of Death, a twisted arch of metal and wrecked cars at the northwest corner of the kingdom. Straight across the wastes is Cascadia, though Deseret is far safer.

Politically it is neutral, though it seems to lean towards siding with Deseret on touchier issues.

Road conditions vary dramatically. Gun laws are nonexistent, for obvious reasons.
Duchy of Des Moines
Image

A shockingly stable nation populated almost entirely by pigs. Literally.

Founded by members of the Spanish nobility on vacation in Iowa for God knows what reason shortly after the Flare and subsequent collapse of American government, Des Moines did far better than many of its counterparts in the Plains: It is politically uncorrupt, environmentally green, economically self-sustenant, and most important of all, wealthy: While corn and pork are indeed its biggest export, Des Moines actually has a very diversified economy. Its vast ammunition manufacturing facilities and manufacturing equipment factories lend it the nickname of The Second Forge, or Backup Forge, though DMers prefer the former.

Des Moines operates a sizable military, with a high-tech air force that, among other things, patrols highways in light transport craft modified for gunship roles. Raiders are frequent on the open highways, though they stay the hell away from the capital, where most of those gunships are based, and the border with Communist Wisconsin, where Des Moines has most of its land troops.

Road conditions are superb, though there are gravel roads in the more rural areas. Gun laws are loose, though ammunition is somewhat regulated. Just don't be too reckless in attaching weapons to your vehicle, or local police might mistake you for a raider.
Union of Winnipeg
Image

Most likely the worst part of the Plains to be in.

The Union of Winnipeg was one of the few states that managed to break away from Canada after the Flare, nabbing the northern part of Minnesota from Lakota in a minor, bloodless war. It wasn't worth that much. Its economy is heavily dependent on lumber, which isn't worth nearly as much as it once was, though it keeps it from completely falling apart. What oil there was in Manitoba is out in the Wasteland, and thus inaccessible.

The Winnipeg military is a joke. The Winnipeg police is an even greater joke. What isn't a joke are the raiders, who have abandoned vehicles almost entirely in exchange for simply booby-trapping the road, or setting up sniping positions among the country's many forests. Crime is a problem, even in the capital, which has been compared to Nassau at the turn of the 18th Century.

Gun laws do not exist, roads are poor, and civil rights vary from area to area. Nothing is certain, almost everything is permitted, the trees have eyes. But hey, at least they have a nice flag.
United Lakotan States
Image

The other big former reservation success story, though not as big a success as the Navajo Federation.

How the Lakotans managed to get duped into giving up the northern section of Minnesota in exchange for a single bit of Manitoba is a mystery, but they did, and now they're the only Native American nation with boundaries extending past the 49th Parallel. It is a predominantly agricultural state, though oil is expected to surpass farming in economic importance for Lakota sometime in the near future.

The Lakotans clearly got the large end of the stick for North Plains nations, only Des Moines has a larger economy or a larger military. The latter is mostly to keep Wisconsin from wiping Winnipeg out entirely, and also to try and wipe out Wisconsin entirely and absorb it. Or give it over to Green Bay, it depends on how the spotty relations between the two nations are going at that time.

Politically Lakota is split. The Native American majority is somewhat left on most social issues, though economically somewhat conservative. However, most Lakotans support the country's strict immigration policy and effective border control, especially on the border with Wisconsin.

Raiders are commonplace, though the police manage to keep them out of the cities. Guns are universal and only lightly regulated, mostly for safety's sake. Road conditions are good, but take a map, Lakotan roads have an incredible ability to take sharp turns to nowhere.
Free State of Denver
Image

If you can somehow see the Mile High city through the fog, you'll see the capital of Cascadia's closest ally.

The Free State of Denver is probably the wealthiest of the 'small' nations. Mining, agriculture, food manufacturing, communications, and transport are all big businesses here. A lot of semis are manufactured here as well, especially the L-class semis, the ones that pull trains of trailers a mile long across the continent with their hulking diesel [or electric] engines. Some are even built tough enough to travel across the Wastes, which is exactly what they do. Hey, it's good advertising. A relative newcomer to the economic scene is cannabis, which has proven to be an even bigger boon to the economy. Sure, sale and production is run by the government, but nobody's complaining.

Denver is probably the most politically left nation to still have nuclear weapons in its arsenal, though it has yet to shown even the slightest interest in using them. Rumor has it that the government even wants to sell them to the Confederacy, though these are just rumors, and unlikely, as the Confederacy already has WMDs. It's far more likely they simply want to take them apart and see if they can build nuclear-powered semis as they have frequently attempted.

Denver's military is small, well-trained, and well-equipped. Raiders operate mostly at night and with electric vehicles, so as to avoid detection: DAF jets can and will pop out of nowhere, swoop down, blast you away, then fly away before your buddies have time to react. Still, they usually only send in the military or police if you draw a lot of attention, the highways here are just as much a no-man's-land as they are in most parts of the former United States and Canada.

Guns are strongly regulated, ammunition more so, though open carry is perfectly legal. Road conditions are very good except in some mountain areas.
Kingdom of Kansas
Image

The Switzerland of the West.

The Kingdom of Kansas is a medium-sized constitutional monarchy located in the center of the Former 48, with its capital being Kansas City. An economic giant, it is easily the wealthiest of the Midwest nations, second only to Texas on the continent. Aerospace, agriculture, food processing, and of course, oil, are the four main drives of the nation. It is also home to the continent's quirkier car builders. If you want a winged car that'll actually fly, Kansas is a good place to look. If you want a car that'll submerge... best go to one of their offices in the Confederacy, at least to test it. It has a lot of rivers. It doesn't exactly have any oceans, though.

A politically leftist nation with good civil rights and gay marriage [despite rural Oklahoman protests], from an international standpoint, Kansas is very neutral, not getting involved in wars and instead serving as a place for other nations to talk diplomacy on an even field. There are a number of good reasons for this.

Firstly, Kansas practices conscription, and with a fleet of stealth bombers and modern tanks at their disposal, that is a very big thing. Everyone is required to take basic training and have basic knowledge of how to fly a plane or drive a tracked vehicle. They then take their weapons home with them, along with a license to get ammo for said military-grade weapon. You know, just in case the lords of Chicago completely lose their goddamn minds. These guns aren't registered, by the way. No guns are.

Every house is required either have a blast shelter of their own, or have a tunnel that takes them to the nearest nuclear shelter, and these things are built to actually withstand a nuke dropped on them. The entire country's infrastructure is rigged to blow if local authorities decide that raiders have been having too much fun on the highways. Or if the lords of Chicago completely lose their minds.

Raiders are only a problem in the more rural areas that don't have bridges. Which is a surprisingly large amount of the country, as most raiders have adjusted to just driving 4WD vehicles. Road conditions are pristine, though some areas have gravel, some roads lead to nowhere. Gun laws are very loose, it's ammunition that is regulated.
Federal Republic of Green Bay
Image

Socialist Wisconsin's anti-drug.

The Federal Republic of Green Bay could be considered the South Korea to Communist Wisconsin's North Korea, but with substantially more cheese. Agriculture [mostly dairy], manufacturing, and healthcare are the big drives here, with the best hospitals outside of Lakota or Texas found within Green Bay's borders. And the most ferocious gridiron football fans. It's best not to support a team besides the Green Bay Packers when you're here. Manufacturing is both big and small here: Heavy construction equipment and motorcycles are the two most common motor vehicles rolled off of Green Bay assemblies, with boats a somewhat distant third.

The military here is excessively well-equipped, with 'scout vehicles' manufactured in the Forge looking like they should be piloted by Orks. Anything and everything to stave off Communist Wisconsin. Rumor has it they're developing nukes. But those are just rumors, right? Right?

Civil rights here are above average. They usually improve in bursts, usually after Communist Wisconsin does something oppressive. Gays were given the right to marry less than a week after Communist Wisconsin passed a law banning sodomy.

Road conditions are still poor, however, due to the weather of the area. Gun laws are average. Concealed carry is prohibited in most of the country, though it's best to ask.
Parliamentary Republic of Michigan [The Forge]
Image

The Beating Heart of the World.

The Forge is a slightly politcally left parliamentary republic occupying the whole of the former state of Michigan. It has a decent military, but not the best, good civil rights, but not the best, and a powerful economy, but not the strongest. Its economic assets include some agriculture, information tech, mining, and aerospace, but these are not the important things.

No, the important factor that granted Michigan the informal name of The Forge is its automotive manufacturing, which is famously second to none worldwide, after the collapse of China. More cars are built here than anywhere else on Earth, from mass-production models, to modified hot rods, to restored barn finds resurrected to factory perfection, to bizzare machines built from complete scratch. If it has wheels, a version has probably been made in the Forge's capital of Detroit.

Crime is somewhat problematic, though not nearly as bad as it was before the Flare. Raiders are an infrequent problem here, as most are just in the area to buy something, and not even the Wastelanders are insane enough to try and rob a car builder.

Gun laws are fairly loose in the Forge, though carrying weapons into factories or car shops is strictly prohibited unless you're an employee and have been given explicit permission by the owner. Roads are pristine regardless of what area you're in.
Republic of the Ohio

A haven for small and big business.

The Republic of the Ohio is a smallish nation made up of most of the former states of Ohio and Indiana. It has a potent economy, relying heavily on mining, manufacturing, agriculture and transportation. Most manufacturing is devoted to automobile building, as a number of small auto companies have popped up in the area. Even despite this, transport is the most important business here, and the one that employs the most people. There simply isn't that much out there in the Ohio.

The Republic is split down the middle between left and right, with the Indiana half being strongly right-wing, and the Ohio half being rather left-wing. Civil rights, as a direct result, are a political football, and the government at the moment has left that decision up to individual municipalities. Indianapolis just doesn't want to deal with it.

It also doesn't seem to want to deal with the raiders that plague the area, which leads to the Ohio having the most raid-related crimes of any nation east of the Mississippi River. It's about as bad as it is in Lakota. Which is bad.

Gun laws are relaxed. Concealed carry is illegal in some areas, Indianapolis among them. Road conditions are mediocre. Repaving is needed more-or-less everywhere.
United States of New England
Image

Paradise for sane liberals.

The United States of New England is a small nation that could be considered a scaled-down version of the former United States: It has a vibrant, varied economy, with an even mix of left-and-right voters in the six states. Economically it mostly relies on energy, offshore fishing, stone mining, and service industries such as tourism. Also maple syrup. Don't claim to use Canadian syrup here, they don't like it. Clearly they think Vermont syrup is better, whether you agree with them or are right.

While it is a political melting pot, its government is decidedly left-wing, with a Scandinavian economic system. The military is small and mostly defensive, which is odd considering its large navy. New England is closely allied with Canada and thus has fairly chilly relations with Quebec, though northern Mainers are known for being chummy with the false frogs.

Gun laws vary by state, with Vermont and Maine having very loose regulations, comparable to the Confederate government's, with New Hampshire having slightly stricter laws, Rhode Island having laws stricter than that, Connecticut having much stricter laws, and Massachusetts having the strictest laws of all. The latter two even have 'assault weapons' bans, despite Confederate and Texan citizens repeatedly pointing out that there is no such thing, and most of the features that define an assault weapon have no effect on lethality whatsoever. Road conditions likewise vary by state, with northern Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire generally having a lot of gravel roads, and Connecticut and Rhode Island having mostly very well-paved roads throughout.

And yes, Rhode Island is a full state, calling it a county is a good way to get lots of enemies. Especially in Rhode Island.
Nueva Republica de Miami
Image

The only state to secede from the Confederacy is, ironically, one of their better allies.

Occupying the southern tip of the Florida Peninsula [apart from the Keys, which are part of the Confederate State of Florida], Nueva Miami is the only other part of the former US with Spanish as its primary language. Shut up Puerto Rico. The capital city of Miami is the heart, mind, body, and soul of both the country and the economy, with commerce and finance being the biggest draws. It is also a major tourist destination and a stop between itself and Key West for most flight passengers, as the famous Key doesn't have as large an airport. Miami also boasts the largest cruise ship port in the world, and most ocean liners departing North America leave from here. Can't say the same for cargo, however, as those mostly head to Hampton Roads or New York City.

More notably, however, is that it is a gateway for Cubans and other Latin Americans to enter the continent, a gate made more open after the Cuban government imploded following the Flare. This is believed to be indirectly responsible for Nueva Miami declaring independence from the Confederacy, a move that, while unexpected, was not protested by either the Confederate or Floridian government. Why? Simple: More than half of Nueva Miami is useless swamp. Full of bandits and dropping-points for Caribbean pirates and drug dealers, who are often one and the same. Crime is a massive problem in Nueva Miami, and the government is so corrupt that it sometimes helps criminals out. If Winnipeg is Nassau of the 18th Century, then Miami is Port Moresby of the 20th and 21st.

Oh right, there are actually pirates in the Caribbean. And they aren't the kind that appear in Disney flicks. Go watch a few clips of Black Lagoon. That's what they're like.
Mercantile Republic of Chicago
Image

Wonderland of the East, Sicily of the West.

While claiming to be a 'mercantile republic', in reality Chicago is nothing more than in immensely corrupt oligarchy, as close to a perfect example of the Mafia state as can be achieved. In essence, the Mercantile Republic is what happens when the wrong people try to create a libertarian paradise: Greed and corruption set in, and all sense of political decency fell away in the name of Objectivist ideals.

The vice trades of prostitution and gambling are common and advertised in the Mercantile Republic as if they were perfectly normal. Civil rights are completely erratic, the 'central government' of Chicago does nothing to regulate it, and whether it's legal or not depends largely on the city. It's best to assume it isn't legal except in the wealthier sections of Chicago.

The Mercantile Republic lacks a military entirely, instead relying on mercenaries for its defense and 'annexations'. Its police, likewise, is small and mostly made of volunteers led by incompetent officers. As a direct result, crime rates are incredible. The nation's capital had been pejoratively called 'Chiraq' before the Flare, and now that term is all the more common. Especially coming from Kansans, as Kansas and Chicago are known to have chilly relations. The Confederacy isn't too keen on them, either, but they don't position a quarter of their border patrolmen along their shared border on the Ohio.

Gun regulation laws vary wildly, but are mostly nonexistent except in a few areas. Road conditions vary, though are usually fairly decent.
Hetmanate of New Galicia
[by Wolfenium]
Image

Formed within the untamed frontiers of former Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan, the Ukrainian Canadian state of New Galicia may appear completely out of place in the North American woodland at first sight. Made up of descendants of Ukrainian immigrants arriving as far back as the former Austrio-Hungarian empire, the people of New Galicia had little problem rediscovering or reinforcing their roots in the aftermath of the Flare. Building a fearsome reputation as a mobile raiding force, the self-proclaimed 'Canadian Cossack Host' was able to survive against even the numerically superior Yukon and Canadian force in the Canadian wasteland, often avoiding permanent settlement to elude extermination. Even the sound of their horses' hooves - an archaic but effective fuel-free transport in the Northwest interior - would strike fear into the most hardened of motorised raiders, who would either flee or pay 'tribute' to these proud warriors for safety.

A cross between a semi-nomadic society and a mercenary band, Hetmans are selected via democratic vote. While mostly unrecognised by most states as a rogue bandit mob, New Galicia does possess some real semblance of a functioning nation-state. Interestingly, for their military prowess, they chose to maintain a very close relationship with the vulnerable state of Winnipeg. It is little wonder political analysts had attributed Winnipeg's survival to their almost vassal-like status to New Galicia, forming a military and trade alliance in exchange for recruits from its sizeable Ukrainian community as well as non-Ukrainian auxillaries.

New Galicians do not make the distinction between a farmer and a fighter. Every male at a very young age would often learn to ride their horses before learning even to walk. Proud combatants in the treacherous forests of the Northwest, New Galicians had little use for bulky, gas-guzzling vehicles. Nonetheless, very few still exist within their ranks to provide logistics and peacetime transport.

While commonly accused of collaboration with Russia in the Alaskan invasion, most New Galicians have nothing but spite for the Russians for their historical domination over their homeland. News of the failed invasion of West Ukraine by a combined force of Russian warlords and Russian Crimea have only fuelled their hatred for the federal government in Moscow. Still, they were willing, albeit begrudgedly, to accept any deserter from Russian Alaska who is able to make their way across hostile Yukon-Canadian lands. But woe to you if you are a working spy for any of the myriad Russian agencies eyeing North American lands. If there was anyone who could match the fervent anti-Russian patriotism of the Yukons, it would be the New Galicians.

However, having a dominatrix as a mother is not a good sign of proper parenting, and rumours of her darker personality began to spring up. Woe to any who had caught her fancy, and any cute, furry critter that she had kept for a pet either often end up a stuffed toys or on a plate. A failed coup by the Bonapartists against the 'socialist' government and exile had only served to worsen her bitterness at life. Never try to break her out of her rose-tinted reality. She does not like being reminded of it, and she would make sure she would not be, permanently.
