The Chronicles Of Aether: The Birth Of A World

Postby Zarkenis Ultima » Wed Jul 24, 2013 7:07 pm

Note: Do not post here unless you've been accepted in the Out Of Character Thread

In the beginning, way before the first creatures populated the first lands, and long before even those lands had been born, there was only one thing. That thing which is omnipresent and can neither be created nor destroyed.

Energy. Energy in it's pure, primal state.

That energy- All energy, however, somehow gained sentience. Or was It always sentient? No one knows, for there was nothing before energy, as far as we know. The sentient entity of Energy, Prime, decided to create a world. Or was that always It's purpose? Again, no one knows.

The world that Prime created was called Aether. Upon creating Aether, however, Prime realized that as it created the world It poured Itself in it- Or perhaps it always knew. Upon creating Aether and all of it's elements and creatures, It had also given them energy and sentience on a primordial scale. The grand beings that were born out of this fusion each had control over certain elements of the Aether, although none had full control over all of them. These beings, Prime called Gods.

And as the Gods awakened, Prime, with an amusement that only one such as It could possibly understand, watched. The first was none, as it would not make sense for them to awaken at different times, when they all were born at the same time.

Regardless of that, the fact remains that the Gods awakened.

Among them was Kaaysel. Slowly, he rose from the ground, the fertile soil, still reverberating with the primal energy that had only just created it, along with space, time, and everything else, that had served as his resting spot- If one could say that he had been resting, anyway, given that he had just been born, along with everything else. He gazed all around him, and saw all of the other Gods of Aether. How he knew that, he did not know, but he did not question it. He also saw the sky, a clear sky, light blue, with nothing else on it except a flaming sphere that was massive, but from his perspective, was insignificant and small. He also saw the ground, a rich brown soil that spread far away.

And though he had only just awakened, he knew that he belonged in this world and that this world belonged to him and the others around him, and he knew the name of this world: Aether. And he knew, as much as he knew the name of the world, that his own name was Kaaysel, and that he was the lord of Audacity, bringer of daring deeds, the master of Battle, herald of victory, and above that, the Alchemist, ruler of the elements.

Kaaysel then paid more attention to his surroundings, seeing the pillars and the well. Twelve pillars, each made of timeless and inalterable gray material, and a well made of the same, with mirroring fluids at the bottom. Kaaysel climbed up to the top of one of the pillars, arranged in a circle around the well, and watched as the other Gods, too, explored the world and their own minds after having awakened from nothing and brought to this world which was given to them.

And as always, Prime, too, watched.

Somewhat near Kaaysel, another form pulled free of the ground, shaking itself with a chorus of ticks and tinks as the machinery built into his form began moving. He spied the other God already climbing up to one of the pillars, and so he chose to do the same, following the other one's path as he moved.

He, of course, followed the path. For he was a god of Chemistry - the immutable, constant, unchanging reactions and paths things took. Secondly, he was a god of Machinery, like the clockwork and steam that pervaded his form. Thirdly, though, he was a god of Metal, feeling the tiny, broken-down bits of it pervading the soil beneath his feet.

And so he climbed the pillar next to Kaaysel's, before turning.

"And so, we awaken, from nothingness..." he said simply, his voice carrying.

And so it began, in a sense, everything. Kariosa rose from her position in the ground. Her eyes flickered open, and the heavy feeling of consciousness weighing down on her shoulders. The thought of existence dawned upon her in that moment, and sent a shiver of realization down her form. Life? An idea that was completely new. Every sight and sound, like the dawning of realization. She looked down at herself, wondering how she knew these things, so foreign and familiar. In her hands she held a small vial, and knew to herself it held memories and wishes. It was small, but she knew that as time passed on it would grow.

Time... she thought, another term she couldn't quite grasp. She shook her head and rose, all of the soft soil falling off of her cleanly. She stood and followed the others, climbing to the top of her pillar as if from memory. Her mouth opened in awe. Knowing what she was, where they were, and maybe even their purpose? It was overwhelming.

Another figure spoke, the first real noise she had heard. The voice was loud and impressive, an incredible first sound. "Nothing..." She spoke softly, her voice light. Her eyes closed and she looked up. "Nothing." She repeated.

A hiss and a roar came from a point not far from the pillars, reverberating between them as a warm wind blew towards that same location. The air itself appeared to crystallize and condense, shimmering with a fell light as it resolved its uncertain currents into a physical form. Like something from a statuary of sorts, the clear form of a man appeared, unyielding and immutable as stone. As the last arabesques of the breeze flowed into his outline, he opened his eyes, eyes seething with the force of a hurricane and calmly swirling as a still, sultry summer sky, and moved towards the circle, the air seeming to flow thicker with his passing.

He stood, taking in with a long glance the forms of Kaaysel, Kariosa and the other even as the latter spoke. In response to the statement uttered, he merely nodded and stepped upwards with what seemed to be great ease, standing atop the pillar as he was buoyed up by a small wind. The god smiled as he surveyed the clean, fresh land and most of all the liquid azure sky.

Speaking slowly, with a rolling voice that carried in it a great strength and a limitless calm, the god observed what surrounded him and included it in his utterance. "The clear and transient note of Beginning still echoes, and time it soon shall be to strike the chords of Creation ourselves," he declared.

Life filled his body just as water that had just broken a dam. Mendax arose feeling wonderful, he did not know what brought him from blatant nothingness as the god of luck he took it just as that way he believed that his existence was pure chance as his primal energy breathed a new dawn on this world. There was so much he could do and create, Mendax had a overzealous, arrogant, selfish personality before noticing the other gods he had the quick thought of what he could turn this world into. His own personal paradise in which he could terraform in any way possible endless possibilities.

Mendax then climbed the pillar next to him to reveal others just like him were gazing at each other. He did not try to make sense of it as there were plenty of possibilities that could have caused this miracle to happen. Yet we wanted to discuss this matter with other beings seemingly just like him. He took a deep breath in and called out.

"Ave, my name is", a strange sense of knowledge came over him his name shot into his deepest thoughts, "Mendax. It is very nice to make your acquaintance's. Do you have names?" he bowed smiling in a very elegant manner.

Kariosa's eyes bliked open as another voice filled the air around her. Others had surrounded her, taking up the other spots soon after she had. It felt as if she had known them for an entire lifetime. In full honesty, she had, but she knew it felt like much longer than a few moments. And to her that was everything. She steadied herself on her pillar and sat up straight, watching all of the other gods with great interest. That's what they were, gods. They owned everything, and could create whatever they wanted. Her next breath felt lighter, as if a weight of worry for purpose was lifted off her shoulder. She turned to the other god, Mendax, who had spoken. "Kariosa." She said simply, not knowing exactly how she knew it. All that was apparent was that it was in fact a name she would go by.

Lycaeon woke slowly from his birth-sleep, taking a few deep breaths before opening his eyes for the first time. As he did so, the light from the bright orb in the distance seared his retinas and he squinted. As if in response to this gesture, the orb dimmed obediently. Lycaeon stood, unfolding and stretching his new body, feathered wings sitting atop his back. He examined himself, noting the split between the darkness of night and the brightness of the orb which accounted for the coloration of his fur. I am of a dual nature... he thought.

Lycaeon looked up at the other beings around him, all of them awake and alert near a set of pillars. Carefully, he spread his wings and flapped, rising up to the top of what seemed to be his own, alighting on the pinnacle with ease. Speaking with a soft tone he said, "This world and the space around it...I feel the celestial light bearers. They respond to my beck and call...Curious."

Valtherzaw nodded. "I am Valtherzaw." he said simply, his heel tapping against the top of the pillar repeatedly as he watched, the stone slowly converting into a slightly more orderly form, becoming more reflective as the silicate particles aligned and separated out the impurities, each tap converting more of the stone into a pillar of glass, with metal tendrils running through it. "And it would appear that metals and chemistry are my domain, along with machines."

Mendax nodded along as the others spoke but an interest was developed when Valtherzaw spoke he studied him momentarily. "My skill set seems the include the forces of luck" he pulled out a shiny, shimmering, golden coin with his face on one side and an orb on the other flipping in landing on its head and then letting it disappear in front of them. "...and I would use the term debauchery. I welcome you sir shall we discuss the matter of what forces brought of here today and are forcing us to have this conversation" he examined the area.

Legerdemain came into the world standing. No dragging himself/herself out of the ground, or having to stand up. He/she was already standing up. It wasn't clear why. It simply was how it is. No questions asked... mostly because there was no one who could or would answer if you asked.

As he/she became aware of everything else, the great big world around her/him, his/her head turned upwards, curious as to what might be up there, what else might be lingering just beyond the scope of his/her vision... and promptly gave up after a few seconds, as there were more important matters to attend to at the moment.

He/she noticed the others gathering nearby, and joined them. No walking over, just suddenly was over there. He/she took a leap, if you will. Noticeably not unto one of the empty pillars. No, that would've been too normal.

No, he/she specifically joined Kariosa on her's, specifically directly behind her. Specifically mere inches away from her. Specifically rather noticeably breathing down her neck. Legerdemain simply knew that typically such an action tends to startle people. He/she didn't know why this was so, he/she simply did, and did so.

Why, one might ask?... WHY NOT?

As the gods materialized, their shadows and the shadows of the pillars began to intertwine on the ground. They pooled like a liquid, then crawled up one of the unused pillars, next to the god of luck and debauchery. The liquid blackness then swirled into a circle. From this circle rose a hooded figure, vaguely feminine in shape, with only the lower half of her face visible. A knowing smile played across her lips, as if she already possessed knowledge of exactly what was, what had been, and maybe even what was to be. The shadows dispersed to their original owners, but Trelia, goddess of the dark, of knowing, and of desire, remained. Her scarlet eyes observed the other gods and the bright world around her. "Life... dreams... hope... Where do they come from? And where do they go...? Such meaningless things..." she murmured to herself, as she regarded the infant universe. It was not suitable for her, not yet. There would have to be changes. And she would use the others to effect them.

Lycaeon looked around at the assembled beings and, for some reason, felt the need to introduce himself. He bowed, a bit awkwardly considering he stood on four legs and said, "I am...Lycaeon. I appear to hold sway over the light bearing orbs in the sky closest to us. There is something else, but I will need to meditate on it to find out what."

Kariosa payed little attention to those around her. She already knew them, and would get to know them better in time. But for now, she would let herself sit in awe of the world around her. Though many others occupied their perches around her, she enjoyed the feeling of her own. The others talked and began introductions around her. And while she heard, she hardly listened. Her eyes trailed down once more to the small vial that occupied her hand. While before it had seemed empty, it seemed to be changing hue. She knew what it was immediately and smiled at herself. While having no grandiose powers or impressive mannerisms, she knew that her job was important. In her mind, that's all that was important.

Her thoughts were suddenly interrupted by the feeling of something closer to her than she would have been comfortable with. She tensed up at the feeling and turned suddenly. A slightly unsettling mask covered a figure's face that she knew, but was still undoubtedly startled by. She shoved it hard off of her pillar. Even if it didn't hit the ground or move, it was a lot better than dealing with it just...sitting there. The thing was a god as well, and she momentarily dreaded the idea.

In the ground around the pillars, thunder sounded, and as if some giant container had been ruptured, it suddenly began to rain. The low places in the featureless dirt world filled with water, forming lakes and oceans, and even the ground around the pillars had small puddles of water forming around them. The rain seemed to stop, then all the water began flowing towards a single point. The water defied gravity, forming a crude mound, longer than it was wide or tall. The water solidified, forming a skin that seemed to shimmer, shifting between a pattern resembling a crocodile's scales, shark skin, the ridge and barnacle covered skin of a whale, and countless other sea creatures. The skin near the front of the mound began to stretch, tearing and growing blunt triangular teeth until the majority of the creature's face was taken up by an enormous maw. Smaller tears in the creature's face formed, revealing eyes, as bulges in the creature's sides formed two large flipper-like arms. Kilil was born. Kilil knew many things, how he knew them he did not know. He knew that this blank slate, this world with nothing in it, was the state that all things would return to. The other gods would add their own creations to the world of Aether, and it would be his job to tear them down when necessary. Storms would topple forests. Floods would ruin cities. Waves would erode mountains. He was Kilil, Lord of Destruction and the embodiment of the bottomless ocean itself, and that was his calling. "Does it matter what brought us here? My name is Kilil, and I alone of all of you can see the beauty in this world, a beauty that is corrupted by our presence here. The world shall be left as it is, we have no right to force our own thoughts upon this world."

As the other gods rose from the ground, so too did this one. It was a queer thing, a hunched collection of white sticks and stones roughly making the shape of a body wrapped in a black cloak, with an empty look in what could be called its eyes. The figure shuddered in anxiety, not knowing of the other gods' agendas. It quickly clambered to the nearby pillar, clinging to to base as it observed the others. The figure felt as if it should introduce itself, but it did not want to interrupt anyone, both out of timidness and curiosity of what they were discussing.

As it clung to the pillar the figure collected its thoughts. What was it? What was its purpose? What were the others? The first answers came: its name was Mir, lord of... Death? Judgement? Stories? Such strange, yet familiar concepts. Death was so inconceivable; how could somehting simply end? And to what purpose was judgement? Stories Mir could slightly grasp, or at least the beginning and rising action. However, beyond that it-No, "it" is so impersonal. Mir shall be "he" instead. So, beyond that he had absolutely no understanding of stories. Would the others know what they were? Who knows, but they would probably berate Mir if he asked.

Trelia's inscrutable gaze drifted to this new speaker. His animalistic appearance and forthright mannerisms belied a more sinister interior, she felt. The concept of his third realm was there, in her mind, as all things were. But to put words to it... no, wait, she knew how to do that too, but she didn't know she knew until she knew how to know she knew. Being the goddess of knowledge was confusing. Shaking her head slightly, she turned to Lycaeon. "The part of your domain that you do not know, I believe it is that of the pursuit... the chase... the kill... you are the master of the hunt, Lycaeon." she explained. Though the others introduced themselves freely, Trelia did not.

Lycaeon's eyes narrowed as he listened. "The hunt...that would make sense, though I'm also sensing a distinct lack of...prey is the word, I think. None of you seem like you would taste well, though..." His eyes shone, "A few of you seem like you would provide a good chase." Lycaeon stretched, his wings spreading out and his forepaws reaching upward.

The winged wolf paused. "How did we come to be? How did this world form?"

"For that matter, where is everything else?"

Legerdemain drifted over towards Kilil, a tiny, dark storm cloud appearing beneath his/her feet as a perch. Arms clasped behind back, Legerdemain leaned slightly forward and tilted his/her head to the side, face still inscrutable beneath his/her mask.

"So you're saying that you're the only one who sees beauty in this world, correct? That the rest of us are blind to it, and thus you should make the calls amongst us? Is that what you mean to infer by your statement, or am I reading it wrong? Because that's certainly what you seem to be insinuating."

Legerdemain's voice was... strange, to say the least.

"It is by pure chance we are here together now we must make the best of it however we can" Mendax attention quickly focused then on Trelia. Usually he was not a very curious man, but she made this emotion rage and like the old saying goes 'curiosity killed the cat'. "So very smart" he grinned then turning his attention back to the group as a whole. "I have an unquenchable thirst, I need a substance can anyone create one" alcohol ran through his blood rampant yet he did not know of this compound yet.

Legerdemain's voice was... strange, to say the least.

"Yes." Kilil said, bluntly. "We are intruders on this world, and I can tell you all have plans, ideas for this blank canvas. All of them are wrong. I assure you, everything you create I will destroy, unless it fits my plans.

"How convenient,"Mir mumbled in a high-pitched voice. He stood up straight, and his tone lowered as his confidence increased.

"That your opinion is fact, while the rest of us are terribly mistaken. That we are all a terrible scourge upon this realm, that we are deserving of detestment. Who are you to command our respect and declare the nature of existence? A primal force? An absolute being? An irresistable influence? What knowledge do you hold in that wide maw of yours to make you worthy of infallibility?

"Such an arrogant being you are, your first commandment being condemnation. Please, tell me, O wise leviathan, by what right you make judgement."

Lycaeon, while the others were engaged in hot debate with the whale, had been seized by a sudden impulse of desire and had leapt down off his pillar. He was now crouched in the grass, watching the proceedings. Creeping through the taller grasses surrounding the well, Lycaeon approached the target his instinct was driving him towards.

When he was in position, he heard the other gods reply angrily to the whale and, before the whale could reply, Lycaeon leapt out of the grass and pounced on the behemoth's tail, sinking his teeth into the blubbery flesh. Not half bad... he thought to himself as he licked the skin. It tasted of some kind of plant, though it was mixed in with the delightful taste of raw meat.

Sitting atop the pillar he had climbed up, Kaaysel continued to watch the other Gods as they acted after awakening from their birth by sleep, seeing how nearly all of them chose to imitate his action and climbed up the other pillars for some reason he did not quite understand. But then something else caught his attention. The voices. The other Gods began to speak, and their voices echoed in his ears. As a newborn entity, the sound of his fellows was something entirely new to him, and so he closed his eyes to listen better, as it was impossible to observe sound, regardless of one's divine origins.

And so with his eyes closed the Alchemist continued to explore the sensations his very existence caused him, from the wind on his hair to the beating of his godly heart.

But alas, once more his attention was drawn from this to something else. This time it was something more profound, something that appealed to his very essence, and it was soon apparent to him what it was. And in response, he simply shook his head.

"Already there is fighting between us?" He thought to himself, taking a moment to examine the sound of his own voice in his mind. He sighed in disapproval, also taking a moment to listen to this. He sighed in disapproval because even though he was the master of battle he had no particular desire to have the other Gods fighting each other after mere minutes of being born. Minutes. What were minutes, anyway?

He pondered this as he looked at Kilil and the others, and scratched his head. And somehow, this, too, was new and amazing.
