In 1945, unlikely allies slew the Nazi beast, while humanity's most devastating weapon forced the proud Japanese Empire to it's knees. Where once there stood many great empires, now stood only two. The world had scant time to sigh relief before a new conflict threatened. Unlike the titanic conflicts of preceding decades, this conflict would be waged primarily not by soldiers or tanks, but by spies and politicians, scientists and intellectuals, artists and traitors. The stage is set and a new conflagration is approaching, will you lead your nation through history or change it forever? In this RP you play as a country or resistance organization during the cold war. The year is 1950 and all preceding history follows real life, but starting now you have the chance to change it.

Beijing,China
Mao Zedong drive through the Main square in Beijing. He is now the Chairman of the People's Republic after the victory in the Civil war.The war with Japan also has taken its toll on China, but it showed the world that it could stop the expansionist beasts that it could not just conquer China, and now it has been decimated with the help of the US.
But now Chairman Mao stepped out of the car,and into the seat of Government,Mao then stepped up to the podium on the steps of the medium sized building and spoke to the mammoth crowd ''to the people of the People's Republic,I Chairman Mao am beggining working projects,to rebuild China and make it a world Power. The projects include the the Beijing railway station, the largest to be built in the world, the 'Great Hall of the People' that shall become the seat of Government and 'Workers Stadium' for all the sports that China will soon dominate" as he waves his arms triumphantly,it was all the people wanted to hear.
But Chairman Mao noes that he has his work cut out.A tarnished country,a weak military, food shortages and the threat of the Nationalists in Taiwan.
Mao then begins to send a message to Moscow

Washington DC, United States of America
January, 1950

President Truman sat across his desk from his secretary of state and friend Dean Acheson. "Dean," said Truman, "this situation in Asia troubles me. China has fallen to the reds, Viet Minh attacks in Indochina are intensifying, and if the reports I'm getting are correct North Korea is considering invading South Korea." Acheson sighed and responded, "unfortunately China appears to be permanently aligned with Soviets, but the French might be able to salvage Indochina. De Gaulle is not willing to give up any colonies, especially Indochina, but this puts us in a difficult position. My staff has decided that communist control of Indochina would be a severe threat to our interests in Asia, but De Gaulle's methods are, brutal, to say the least. We don't know whether to distance ourselves from the French or provide them aid, we leave the decision up to you. On the topic of the Koreas, our defense outline as you know, doesn't include the defense of Korea. However, communist control of the Korean peninsula would put Japan in serious danger."

Truman said nothing for a few moments, thinking over the information. "I think, though his methods are brutal, we need to aid De Gaulle against the Viet Minh. Although I believe in self-determination, I personally believe the guerrillas aren't the legitimate representatives of the Vietnamese. Considering more practical factors, we can't afford to lose Southeast Asia, especially after the loss of China and the threat of North Korean invasion looming." Acheson nodded and said, "I'll send a message to De Gaulle immediately inquiring into whether he'll accept American assistance. Will that be all Mr. President?" Truman nodded, "yes Dean, that will be all." Acheson and Truman stood and shook each others hands before Acheson turned to leave. "Dean," said Truman, "see if you can get our forces in Japan on the alert, I don't want us to get caught off guard by the North Koreans." Acheson smiled, nodded, and said "of course Mr. President." With that Acheson departed, leaving Truman alone with his thoughts.

To: France
From: The United States

Greetings to the French Fourth Republic, I have sent this message to inquire into whether our nations can come to an agreement. Our government, though not proponents of colonialism, agrees with your position on the Vietnamese rebels. We can provide you with arms, equipment, and vehicles for use against the Viet Minh. We can also provide special forces training for your troops. Please respond to this message as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

Dean Acheson, Secretary of State of the United States

Stockholm, Sweden
January 1950

Prime Minister Tage Erlander was at work in his office in the Kanslithusen. In theory, at least. His desk was facing a window on the Northern side of the building, and for the past couple of minutes he had been staring out it towards Normalm, contemplating the sight of Stockholm being hit by a bitter winter. Some happy new year this would be, with news that the People's Liberation Army had won the Chinese Civil War, ever-worsening relations and clashes between the two large power blocs, and Scandinavia stuck right in the middle, too close to the Eastern Bloc for comfort. Finland had already been shackled by the 1948 treaty. Who's to say that Sweden wouldn't be next in the USSR's sights? Or Norway?

Reading the recent reports about China and various strategic movements by the two leading superpowers of the world, Erlander couldn't help but wonder, "So, this is how it'll be? Two world wars haven't been enough?". Sweden couldn't possibly hope to stand alone in such a conflict against the entire Soviet bloc, and Erlander shared with his SAP colleagues a distate towards the USA's eagerness to violate national sovereignty and bankroll distasteful regimes for the sake of anti-communism. It stank a bit too much of colonialism. The thought of all the hard work that Sweden and its neighbours had done in building the Nordic model could be wiped out in an instant by a new war, that all the efforts the Social Democrats had made for six decades for a better society could be so easily nullified, was highly disturbing.

The details of this year's budget and new reforms could wait for a few minutes. Erlander set them aside on the table, took a new sheet of paper and began to draft letters to the Prime Ministers of Norway, Denmark and Iceland, to organise more talks to form a Scandinavian defence union. He contemplated for a second attempting to appeal to them as "fellow Scandinavians", but discarded that thought immediately - he didn't want to insult Denmark and Norway by reminding them of how Sweden had sat by and did nothing while the Nazis occupied them, or by implying that the negotiations would be held on anything but an equal basis. He had long advocated for the idea of a Scandinavian defence union, having chaired the discussions two years prior that had been overwhelmed by the course of events. After all, Denmark and Norway had held off on joining NATO at the last minute (the Foreign Minister hinted that, apparently, the USA had come on a bit too strongly in wanting access to Scandinavian bases and had implied that the Nordic countries were incapable of defending themselves, which killed some enthusiasm for the alliance; Gerhardsen felt that there was a risk to party unity, so the decision was postponed), whereas Iceland saw an anti-NATO riot that had given some of its statesmen second thoughts about affiliating with the alliance, so the matter remained in limbo for now.

Erlander finally finished drafting the messages, and had them sent to be transmitted as quickly as possible. He could only hope that Hedtoft, Thors and Gerhardsen shared his concerns and would be at least open to the proposal. Then, he did his best to clear his thoughts and return to the pressing domestic matters at hand.

French Indochina
Chairman Mao sat at his desk reading the daily newspaper as his military commanders walked in "ah comrades, come in sit down" the three men then sat down "gentlemen, our comrades in Indochina are seeking independance.Would it be feasible to supply them with Older weapons that we hold,if they succeed it may mean that we can secure a foothold in the communist Crusade on the world,so will this operation be carried out? He wondered what they would say but then the leading General answered "yes Chairman Mao,it shall be done".
Chairman Mao then said "you are dismissed" as they left he then thought to himself 'Asia shall become Marxist.....' he then got back to his paper.

Canberra, Australia
January 1950

Prime Minister Robert Menzies was hard at work. It was a new year across the world, with January welcoming 1950. Not long after the end of the second World War. Recently, the news was that the People's Liberation Army had won the civil war that took place in China, then came news that the two new superpowers of the world, the USSR and the USA, had been having worsening disagreements.

He wondered, could this really be the beginning stages of another war. Soon after the end of the second World War, could this be the third? He shuddered with the thoughts of the Japanese advance coming too close to Australian territory, and frowned at the thought of Soviet powers doing the same thing within the next five years. He thought long and hard, and knew that New Zealand and Australia could ally together. He decided that would be the best idea right now, as he felt it was not the time to ally with the United States, and he would die before being allied to the Soviets.

Prime Minister Falco Mesman,

Greetings to the people of New Zealand, I am sending this message to ask for an alliance between Australia and New Zealand. I currently feel that this is necessary, and that since both our nations are the two of the largest nations in the Pacific, we should be allied. Please let me know if you feel the same way on this matter. We will be closely watching the United States and the USSR in this dark age. Australia remains nuetral in this matter, but still disagree strongly with Communism.

Sincerely,
Robert Menzies

I would like you, my most valued ally, that you have an outstanding idea, of which has been greatly considered and thought through by the CCCP's finest government and military officials, including myself. After deep thought, we have decided to instead invite you to our fine capital city of Moscow. I have decided such as I am not entirely sure about your offer and would like to negotiate it with you personally face-to-face. We would also have the rare chance to discuss more matters and issues, such as the war in Indochina and the US. Not only that, but we will be able to construct a close friendship between our nations that no nation, not even the United States could break through. I look forward to your response.

Bonn, Germany

Chancellor Konrad Adenaur watched the pendulum on his grandfather clock swing back and forth, back and forth. He loved watching this, because of the regularity of the swings. Regularity and pattern were hard to come by these days, he thought to himself. Just five years ago, Germany was the most powerful nation on Earth. Now, it was but a shell of its former glory, a peasent to king it once was. But that doesn't mean it should bow down and fade quietly into obscurity. Germany had been sliced in two by the Allies half a decade ago, one half a beacon of freedom, a silent sentry peering over the Iron Curtain, the other a crippled joke, a puppet whose strings are pulled by its Communist masters. He was just lucky his was the former.

Chancellor Konrad hated self reflection. Any reflection for that matter. To lead the proper Germany on the path to reclaiming their throne, being sentimental would only be a setback. He was a man of facts, cold hard facts. He played with the two documents in front of him. He picked up the first, and read it over again. It was a proclamation decreeing the building of 20 top class warships. The first step to becoming a power was the sea. 20 extra ships would raise the total amount beyond 50. This was to be done within 2 years. It would be no simple task, but it would be only the first challenge of the new decade.

He then went to the second document. This was to be sent directly to Paris, via one of the most trustworthy staff members Konrad had, Georg Bruchel. He was a close personal friend, not to mention the German Foreign Minister. This precaution was very normal of Konrad, actually. He often said that if there was a chance Soviets or those damn Chinese could lay hands on it, it wasn't worth it. The document read as follows:

To: President de Gaulle
From: Chancellor Konrad Adenaur

Dear President,
It is with great pride that I write this letter. I have sent this directly to you with some urgency because of the growing tensions in Indochina. The Federal Republic of Germany would be honored to aid you in the defense against communism in said country. All you must do is ask, and you will have military and economic aid in the case of Chinese or Soviet invasion. The defense of the free world, no matter where the threat comes from, is of the utmost importance to me, and the German people. We wish you success in dealing with the Chinese.

Sincerely,
Chancellor Konrad Adenaur

Somewhere in Coastal Dalmatia
Luburic sat at his rickety desk and began reading the daily reports. Several times Luburic was forced to drop his papers and calm himself, the Yugoslavs were too far versed in partisan warfare to be fought effectively, he began writing a letter to his Comrade in Germany.
Dear Heydrich,

My dear friend, every day our numbers go down, another pocket silenced, another informant brought to the enemy side. I ask for your aid, we will begin evacuating every man we can, to Spain and Argentina and possibly Germany as well if you wish your numbers bolstered, I would appreciate Visas and identities sent over for our men, as this will speed the process.

Madrid, Estado Español
January 1950

Mariposa Evangelista walked slowly and nervously through the halls of power leading to Generallisimo Franco's study. She was carrying a gilded silver tray containing the finest coffee from Catalan, biscuits, and cured pork. While the opulent foods were indeed expensive, costing more than the average village family earned in a week - that wasn't the reason she was being so careful.

Mariposa was a beautiful, raven-haired, hazel-eyed young woman of 17 years from Barcelona. Mariposa was also Francisco Franco's current violent, sexual conquest. She continued walking as steady as she could while treasured memories of her father, killed during the first civil war swirled in her head. She faintly smiled at the two guards posted outside Franco's door. Two new, understanding faces who've needed to replace the two regular sentries that came down with sudden illnesses.

She gently opened the study door, and saw Franco sitting at his desk; studying the latest suppression reports from the Pyrenees. Mariposa repressed the instant revulsion she felt, and also fought the urge to look back at the doorway. Flashes of last evening slashed at her consciousness. His smell. His sweaty uncaring body. The rough painful violence, over in a few minutes. The tears and splash of blood on her bed - as it was her first.

His Excellency Generallisimo Francisco Franco looked up at her, and they locked eyes. After an instant for Franco, and an eternity for Mariposa - the young lady who was on the verge of tears extracted a Star 1914 Modelo .32acp handgun from her bodice and fired 3 shots at the dictator. All 3 had landed, but not where she had aimed. Two hit Franco in the shoulder, and one in the neck.

The guards, sympathetic to not only her plight but those of the people, themselves relations of those that died fighting for the old Second Republic, did nothing as she walked calmly up to the bleeding general, shoved the barrel in his mouth, pulled the trigger - then turned the gun on herself ending her life.

Within 10 days, the Second Spanish Civil War was raging; and the country again on fire, and the innocent again caught in the middle.

Official Communique of the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia

Due to the repeated transgressions and short-sighted political attacks committed by the Republic of Albania, the Federal Assembly of the People's Republic of Yugoslavia publicly and officially SEVERS all diplomatic, economic, military, and public ties with the aforementioned nation of Albania. Within this publicly declared message, the Federal Assembly of Yugoslavia will make her grievances clear and public for people and governments of the world to see.

- The nation of Albania has accepted willingly FOREIGN AID from Yugoslavia in the form of investment, industrialization, joint military cooperation and training, as well as various other forms of economic standardization and cooperation that has allowed Albania to recover from the damages accrued from the previous World War from Italian occupation, and modernizing the nation's economy to a standard acceptable to any industrialized nation.
- The nation of Albania has demanded INCREASED PAYMENT in exorbitant amounts for raw materials exported to Yugoslavia, while Yugoslavia has been willing, and has, paid thrice times the intrinsic amount paid for on the international market. This is without the mention of Albania's ability to efficiently extract said materials due to economic aid and machine products provided at reduced rates from Yugoslavia, another form of foreign aid.
-The nation of Albania have detained, interrogated, deported, and executed POLITICAL PRISONERS based on ideological beliefs that coincide with those held by officials of Yugoslavia. This constitutes a crime against freedom of belief, against their own people, and against Yugoslavia. Any further deaths resulting from "Titoist" purges will be considered an act of war.

In light of these issues that have been considered irreparable, the Federal Assembly of Yugoslavia CONDEMNS the actions of the Albanian government, in its failure to stand by its true friend, instead acting as to extract all value it sees fit. Following this message, all Yugoslavian aid to Albania will be officially withdrawn, including monetary support and investments in industry. Yugoslavian military advisers, officers, and personnel are to be recalled from Albania effective immediately.

To compensate Yugoslavian losses in Albania, the Federal Assembly has demanded a reparations bill of 800,000,000 Din. be paid by the Albanian government to Yugoslavia. Failure to comply will result in consideration of retaliation by Yugoslavia.

Tel Aviv, State of Israel
January 2, 1950

The Knesset sang the national anthem as the morning sun shone through the window. President Chaim Weizmann smiled as the song concluded and he said, "My fellow brothers and sisters, today is another day of our 2,000 Year Hope." He smiled and said, "We control the Mandate, but we are still in bad relations with Arabs everywhere for the Independence War we fought in 1948... But either way, we shall overcome our trials and create a new land of prosperity."

The Knesset applauded and he grinned.

After the convergence of the Knesset debating issues, he understood the issue -- Palestinian Arabs outnumbered the Jews by as much as 60%. This was an issue, and the hardliner Orthodox Jewish population wanted Israel to be a true Jewish state, but Weizmann preferred the creation of a Jewish state that welcomed Arabs as equals -- And with Jerusalem, a triple holy city in it's borders, the Arabs would come back, unless he put their fears to rest.

He spoke over national radio, "Ladies and gentlemen of Israel, Arabs and Jews alike. We are all brothers on this land, and we shall overcome old woes and bond each other. Arabs, you too are Israeli in my eyes, you are our brothers of historic means, and together we can better our nation. Instead of pulling apart at the seams, dividing our nation in Muslim Palestinians and Jewish Israelis, why can't we just be friends? A secular nation where all men are created equal?

Consider it."

Elsewhere, the Israeli government began a construction project of a railway from Gaza to Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem.

To: The Federal Republic of Germany
From: The United States of America Department of State

As you know tensions in Europe are rising and your country, unfortunately, is on the frontline between communist Europe and free Europe. Therefore, the American government would like to see full sovereignty returned to your country as well as the restoration of your armed forces. We will began dialogue with your nation as well as the allied powers of France and the United Kingdom to decide when your sovereignty will be restored as well as the conditions associated with restoration. Our government would like to state that your entry into NATO will be necessary before we are willing to restore sovereignty. We will contact the French and British immediately, requesting a meeting at a location to be specified later. God willing we can come to an agreement that will allow the German people to live in a secure, prosperous, and just nation.

Sincerely,

Dean Acheson, United States Secretary of State

To: The French Fourth Republic
From: The United States Secretary of State

The threat of communist Europe looms on the horizon and measures must be put in place to check communist agression. Our government would like to restore West German sovereignty in order to secure the safety of western Europe. If West Germany was allowed to rearm it would form a integral part of the defence of western Europe. We understand that you may be understandably skeptical of German rearmament, but a reformed German military that is bound to NATO give a major boost in strength to NATO forces. We are in contact with the West German and British governments and we hope a meeting can be held soon.

Sincerely,

Dean Acheson, United States Secretary of State

To: The United Kingdom
From: The United States Secretary of State

The American government has come to the conclusion that the best course of action regarding West Germany would be to accord it full sovereignty and restore it's military. This would, of course, mean Germany would have to join NATO as a prerequisite to independence. We hope you agree with the United States regarding this matter and will support German sovereignty. We have contacted the French and German governments and plan on holding a meeting soon.

Sincerely,

Dean Acheson, United States Secretary of State

We are writing in response of your recent message about German independence. Chancellor Konrad Adenaur was overjoyed with the preposition, and would like to invite you to Berlin for a conference immediately. In case you would prefer a different location, we may talk about that further at another time. We also wish to state that even if we were not required to join NATO, we would have anyway, since NATO are the guardians of freedom in Europe. We hope to meet you soon to discuss the specifics of our emancipation.

Schwerin Castle, East Germany
January 1950

Duke Adolf Friedrich of Mecklenburg smiled as Prince Lous Ferdinand of Prussia arrived. Louis appreciated the invitation from the Duke. The man was well known. He played and plays a big role inforeign affairs as he is President of the National Olympic Committe of Germany, was the last governor of Togoland and Duke of the (only from Germany recognized) United Baltic Duchy. If Louis would ever manage to get power, the experienced Duke HAD to be in his cabinet.

Other royalists from most of the houses attended too. One of the most surprising guests was Rupprecht of Bavaria as he hadn't attended the meetings since 1939 (the year he started living in exile in Italy). Oskar of Prussia demanded to make some progress, and the royals actually made some progress. In case of an overthrow of the government they already chose a new flag. Louis Ferdinand draw a conclusion. "Our main goal for now should be to free our friend of the House of Mecklenburg, who is in a communist prison right now. Further we shall work to geht the support of the people back and at last we shall search for international support. The german nation has been chaotic long enough, it's time we bring it back to former glory! Für das Vaterland!"

Sidney Holland, the current Prime Minister of New Zealand, looked around as he checked if everything was with him. It was a quiet sunday morning as the Prime Minister was preparing to go to work. He was holding his car keys in his right hand as he thought if he had everything. Remembering he forgot his bag of paperwork, he went up the stairs and found it on his office table. He glanced up and through the window he saw the outside of his house was empty, with a occasinoal pedestrian going around. Weird, it's usually crowded on this block of the city.

Going downstairs, he grabbed his sack lunch and made for the door. Stepping otuside, he locked the door behind himself and as he walked down the stairs, he was stopped in his tracks at the loud crack of a gunshot. His head snapped backwards as a bullet went straight through his forehead and out the back of his head. As blood sprayed out in front of him and the back of his head, his body collapsed like a sack of potatoes and slumped against the rough stairs of his residence.

Several screams rang out through the street after the gunshot was heard. Most of them came from witnesses who saw the Prime Minister's death on the spot, onlookers who were now either running in fear of their lifes or to the aid of the lifeless body of Sidney Holland. The sniper assassin was on the run, and witnesses pointed at the dark form of a man running along the rooftops. Police Sirens quickly sounded in the distance, and the realization of what just happened sunk in quickly.

Prime Minister of New Zealand Assassinated!

Image

This Sunday morning, on 7:45am, Former Prime Minister Sidney Holland was killed by a fatal gunshot wound. Witnesses report that he was seen leaving his house through the front door as a loud gunshot was heard. Onlookers and the police confirm that the prime minister was shot once through the head, and a short investigation report says it was a sniper round. Police and guards stationed for his protection went in pursuit of the sniper and managed to catch him trying to leave the country in a airport in Wellington. The assassin refused to talk, but his name and nationality reveals that the killer had European and communist ties. Government officials are currently debating on how to react to this incident, and are trying to deduce whether or not this attack was authorized by a national government.

The government will be holding emergency elections to put a new prime minster in power, and in the meantime and current future the New Zealand military and navy have moved in to secure the borders and coasts of the country. A dark day indeed, the New Zealand government and it's people will stay strong and as they wait for a new Prime Minster to come into power, the tensions between the public and the communist/european community escalate.

I fear you may not know me, so I shall introduce myself, I am leader of the Crusaders, anti-communist force of Croatia. Our time is short, too many of our men fled to western nations, only a few have returned and we have not the manpower to retrain them nor the resources to arm them into fighting groups, I have learned of your drive for Anti-Communist allies across the globe and I beg of you to lend us a helping hand in ridding Croatia of the Bolshevik scum. I beg, I plead, give aid in our time of need, my last men cling to the walls of their caves and huts with nothing to eat but grass, our people starve and so our food sources are as well destroyed.

Chaim Weizmann put out his cigarette and looked at the letter from the President of India. He had recieved two copies of the letter, one addressed to the "Head of Palestine", and to the President of Israel. As Palestine had been formally annexed by Israel and the process of Arab-Israeli Friendship had begun, Weizmann and smiled and waited for results. Of course, his life was slipping from him -- He predicted he would not live to the next election. His designated political successor was Joshua Heissman, a young 27-year-old who was in due process of finishing his political studies -- He was Chaim's absolute future.

Chaim smiled and responded.

Official Communique of the People's Republic of Albania

Viewing the unilateral actions of the Federal Assembly of the People's Republic of Yugoslavia with great misgivings, and disappointed that the Yugoslavian government would act in such a way, the People's Assembly of the People's Republic of Albania do hereby move to sever all ties with that nation within Albania.

However, recognizing that the People's Republic of Yugoslavia is operating under the assumption that various grievances exist, and have publically and officially made mention of them in a prior communique, the People's Assembly has detailed a response, as follows, on behalf of the peace-loving people of Albania.

---The People's Republic of Albania did indeed accept, willingly, foreign aid from the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia with the intention of using such aid to rebuild infrastructure, modernize economic systems, and industrialize various industries throughout the country. However, it was the view of the Albanian government and people at the time that the Yugoslavian government was acting to help a fellow country, rather than simply loaning such services.

---Economic factors regarding the extraction of resources, and the transport of said resources for sale to the People's Republic of Yugoslavia are not entirely under the control of the Albanian government. The people of Albania labor to extract said resources, while the government works diligently to help reduce costs wherever possible, but such industrialization that the Federal Assembly demands is not possible in such a short time frame.

---The peace-loving people of the People's Republic of Albania must take action when under the threat of attack, whether the threat be foreign or domestic in origin. The incidents and individuals involved in the Federal Assembly's complaint posed an unacceptable domestic threat to the safety and security of the Albanian people, and the government acted as it saw fit to address the threat, and bring peace to the country and people once more.

With both sides presented, the People's Assembly of Albania has debated the issue and come to these conclusions:

---Regarding the first and second complaints; the People's Assembly of Albania outright rejects Yugoslavian complaints that the aid tendered by that nation was not repaid, arguing that the Albanian government accepted the aid at the time with no reservations or additional conditions attached. The People's Assembly also note that the economic factors governing the second complaint are outside the control of the Albanian government, and thus reject the second complaint as well.

---Regarding the third complaint: The People's Assembly of Albania regard the security of itself and its people to be of the utmost priority, and will act to resolve any threats to the safety and security of the people where and when it sees fit. It is regrettable that the Yugoslavian people feel in such a way, but the security and safety of the Albanian people must take precedence over the sensibilities of the Yugoslavian government.

As the Yugoslavian government came to the decision to act in such an unprecedented manner without regard for the Albanian response, the People's Assembly of Albania officially and publically condemns the actions of the Yugoslavian government, demonstrated through such unilateral action, without consideration for the processes of a country it considered a 'true friend'.

The People's Republic of Albania hereby rejects, wholeheartedly and utterly, the demands of the Federal Assembly for reparations, and additionally condemns the Yugoslavian government for considering such aggressive and combative tactics as retaliation.

-Signed by Teodor Heba, Chairman of the People's Assembly of Albania
-Notarized by Enver Hoxha, First Secretary and Prime Minister of Albania

Stockholm, Sweden

A couple of days later, Tage Erlander walked into his office at the start of a new day, fully expecting another routine of more drafting of reforms and adjustments for education and healthcare spending, as well as a possible new tax increase in case the current funds were insufficient (unlikely, given that the record years made sure Sweden could afford it), which was certainly more upbeat compared to reflecting on the foreign situation and what to do about the ever-worsening Cold War, or hearing that the Divina tanker had been sunk by the HMS Truculent. So it was with some surprise that once he put aside his coat and sat down at his desk, he instead discovered new telegrams, with a note from the Minister of Foreign Affairs Östen Undén, remarking on the importance of the telegrams leading him to decide that Erlander needed to respond to them.

Intrigued, Erlander picked up the first telegram. It was an announcement by the Indian Government about the formation of the Non Aligned Movement, and every Scandinavian country except Finland was invited. This was quite a momentous occasion, and Erlander couldn't help but smile at reading the news. "Finally, an opening!", he said to himself. It was an opportunity he wouldn't squander needlessly.

The other telegrams turned out to be from the Prime Ministers of Norway, Denmark and Iceland. Erlander couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief when it turned out they were open to the possibility of a Scandinavian defense union.

Code: Select all
To: Tage Erlander, Prime Minister of Sweden
From: Einar Gerhardsen, Prime Minister of Norway

Tage, I've received your last proposal and discussed it with my cabinet colleagues. There's an overwhelming feeling that the Scandinavian defense union idea deserves at least another attempt before we all decide which path to take, and I feel Norwegians would be more comfortable in an alliance with our compatriots than condescending meddlers like those American representatives.

We've also been invited to the upcoming NAM meeting, and I think it's best if we have a meeting to talk this over before the summit. Makes it look better if we can present at least a halfway united front.

Code: Select all
To: Tage Erlander, Prime Minister of Sweden
From: Hans Hedtoft, Prime Minister of Denmark

You certainly have our support in organising a new round of talks about the Scandinavian defense union! It's a shame that the initial considerations were overwhelmed by the course of external forces beyond our control; the idea certainly deserves another go at the very least.

I recommend a meeting on this be scheduled before the NAM summit we've been invited to. I certainly hope it'll make those NATO negotiators think twice about what they say about us!

Code: Select all
To: Tage Erlander, Prime Minister of Sweden
From: Ólafur Thors, Prime Minister of Iceland

We have to schedule the talks for the Scandinavian defense union as soon as we can. The faster we can move on this, the less I'll have to deal with American diplomats hounding me to join NATO because they really want Keflavík that badly and protesters who don't want any kind of involvement in a military alliance. I'm sure a Scandinavian defense union would be an easier sell than NATO for the public.

Looking forward to fruitful negotiations.

Erlander quickly sat down to write replies to all three messages, suggesting that the meeting date be either 25 January or 1 February, depending on which accommodated the Prime Ministers' schedules the best, then wrote another message confirming Sweden's attendance at the NAM summit. He then had the messages sent to be dispatched as quickly as possible.

Briefing Room of the Federal Assembly of Yugoslavia
Belgrade, Serbia
February, 1950

The room was unassuming, with solid wood flooring of dark pine, the walls made of a similar wood, texture, and style. It was rectangular, roughly twenty feet long and ten feet in diameter, with a large, oval-shaped table occupying much of the center area. A projector sat in the middle of the table, its image commanding the views of every member attending the Joint Staff meeting called by the Prime Minister Josip Broz Tito and Ivan Ribar. Besides the two heads of state, a number of Generals, military Officers and their aids also joined.

Tito stood beside the image of the projector, his hands clasped behind his back in a manner displaying cool control over the situation. He was clothed in his normal military uniform this time. The image displayed on the screen showed several men in custody, with Yugoslav soldiers following close behind, rifles carefully trained on their heads. "These separatists," spat Tito, "that call themselves the Crusaders, as you all know, have been on the run for some time now. Their situation is dire, with harsh discipline and police intervention causing membership and recruitment rates to dwindle considerably, they can no longer consider the possibility of launching armed campaigns against the rightful Yugoslav Government."

Image
Croatian Territorial Defense forces round up suspected Crusader Members.

The slide clicked over after a pause in Tito's speech, to another picture of a cache of weapons, consisting of Nazi Germany-era weaponry, including Karabiner 98 rifles, several disposable anti-tank Panzerfausts, a single MG-42 carrying Croatian markings, and two Sturmgewehr-45's carrying Croatian markings; assault rifles manufactured late in the war by a desperate Germany. "However, their presence remains, and this is intolerable. Given their position, it is not unthinkable that higher ranking members would attempt to flee the country, and continue their fight elsewhere, or go deep into hiding and attempt to re-integrate with society. We must crush this plague before it continues to spread."

"I have dispatched a number of brigades to enforce border control, as well as mobilized a small portion of the Territorial defense force in Croatia and Slovenia to undertake security measures, and put a greater number on standby, given the recent political situation with Albania," The Prime Minister was harshly cut off by the creak of a door, as a uniformed soldier entered the room, saluting his Commanders, Tito and Ribel, he strides towards the President, whispering a few low words, before departing. "A response from Albania," he replied as he stood, looking about. "I shall return shortly, if you will excuse me gentlemen."

After the President departed, Tito motioned towards the projector for the lights to come on, and the projector's glow faded, replaced by the iridescent flood of light. The Prime Minister took a seat where the President was previously seated, flipping through a stack of papers nearby. He looked up and glanced briefly at the non-military staff members present, before looking back down at the papers. "Leave us," he commanded. The staff began to file out, and soon only military officers were left in the room.

"Gentlemen, I will be frank with you," he began, hands folded on the table. "I will not let the politics of this delicate situation get in the way and allow such an impressible neighbor fall into the hands of the Soviets so easily. If Albania is foolish enough to so brazenly renounce our aid and turn to Moscow, then Belgrade must step in before this happens." He took out a second stack, titled "MOBILIZATION ORDERS -- OPERATION GOLDEN EAGLE", which rested on top of a stack of sealed envelopes, which were distributed to the military staff. "Dismissed," he grunted, before standing and turning to leave.

The communists have united the nation, despite our fighting they have done the impossible, our German and Italian allies abandoned us to the wolfs, and so we shall abandon them. The preparations began, and the forces amassed, soon the Albanians would provide distraction enough for a partisan uprising in the Northern states.

Greetings,

Our government would like to extend our sincere condolences to your nation during this difficult time. Mr. Holland was a great man and the good he did for the economy of New Zealand will never be forgotten, indeed he was an inspiring figure. His tragic death proves that the communist threat is reaching critical levels. Therefore our government would like to deepen ties with yours. We propose your nation send a representative to Washington where we can discuss forming a military agreement between our nations. We hope to hear your response soon.
