No, hunting is a tech that everyone starts with. Just think of a tech that would help you with your play style. For example, let's say you wanna be a faction of hunter-gatherers. Then you could have bows and arrows as a starting tech to help hunt.

And when I do take the south after being held back for so long, the wars would have been so expensive that my nation would fracture into a feudal state like feudal Japan. Then I'll slowly have to pick the pieces up and finally enter a state of peace!

Right! I'll have the south slow me down! Or stop me! And when I do take the south after being held back for so long, the wars would have been so expensive that my nation would fracture into a feudal state like feudal Japan. Then I'll slowly have to pick the pieces up and finally enter a state of peace!

Wow, a nation allowing itself to fall apart without another nation telling it to, could I get written proof? also, can we develop along different tech lines as opposed to IRL? I was thinking of skipping some essential techs while picking up more unorthodox techs (ie steampunk, miniaturized nuclear reactors)?
Finally, I'm not to insanely militaristic, don't try picking a fight unless you want me to be.

But then something terrible happened: The Empire of Pretantia got called out on being too damn fast. And so The Orichi Alliance was formed, sharing much of the tech the Oni had. Now the Oni capital has been attacked and the conquest has stopped at Tanto(in the "o" in "mountains"). All because I was dangerously close to godmoding. Now this little empire stopped growing, and we're thankful for that. For the next 10 years it is going to be a stalemate at Tanto until Oni atones for godmoding.
