The gnome pushed herself onward, exhaustion dragging on every part of her, pulling her down. She took another step. And another. And the ache responded.
There was grass beneath her feet. That was still new. She had crossed grass hundreds of times to get here, of course, but it was still a novelty. Grass at her feet and sky above her. Couldn't spend her time looking up or down though. Had to look forward. Forward. Forward.
The giant building was in sight, though. That was definitely it, unlike all those other times.

She had found it in SAM's memory. Elfen High. There was something about this place that was significant to the machine. She had found it in their 'games'. That's what SAM called it. The gnome would try to mess with SAM without the machine noticing. Wiped memories here, logic loops there, corrupted pathways, whatever she could manage. And SAM would notice. And SAM would fix it. And the gnome would be punished. And SAM would win the game. But now the gnome had won. She had found something. A place. This place. Of course the machine would come looking for her here. Of course she would. But this place was defended. The gnome would be safer here than anywhere else.

And so she had waited. She had continued in her work. She had kept playing the game. She had taken her punishments. And eventually, she had found what she was waiting for. A gap in SAM's vigilance. An obvious gap, really, when you looked at it. Not something you'd think the machine would overlook. Maybe some of their games had taken a bigger toll than the gnome or the machine realised. Maybe SAM hadn't fixed herself--no, itself--quite as well as it imagined.

The first time the gnome stepped outside, she was blinded. She stood for a second, unable to move, before forcing herself to run in some random direction. It didn't matter where she was going, just away would do. Eventually, when she was out of sight of the damned place, and er sight had adjusted, she took a proper look at her surroundings. She spent the next several hours inside a dumpster, trying to work up the courage to step out under the sky again. There was just... just so much of it.

That was two weeks ago. The endless horizons held no fear for her anymore. There was no fear, not really. For the first few days, she was certain the machine was right behind her, but nothing persued her and her frantic dash to freedom became a monotonous trudge through endless towns and countryside. She slept indoors when she could and froze when she couldn't. There was no shortage of food on the road if you weren't picky and were quicker than a mouse. And at last she had made it. The stone monolith loomed above her. It's giant wooden doors were shut, forboding, unwelcoming. But she had arrived. She took another step and the ache responded. You've finished, every muscle in her body screamed at her, Can we rest now?

The next thing the gnome knew she was staring into a pair of blue human eyes in a pale, nervous face. There was what felt like carpet beneath her. She sat up. Pain wracked her body as her musces shouted in protest once again. She lay down. Her hand went to the waistband of the tattered, stained children's corduroys she wore. Her hammer was safe. She wiped the drool from her mouth with her equally soiled and threadbare t-shirt smearing what was left of Dora the Explorer's face.

"Welcome to Elfen High," he had said. The gnome started laughing. A high-pitched, bubbly giggle that caused the muscles in her chest and back to sieze up. She sat up again out of necessity. She took her hammer from her waistband, gave the boy in front of her three sharp taps on the forehead, and listened to it ring. Mostly human, but with something she didn't recognise thrown in too. She could hear the magic crackling through every double helix, modulating her hammer's clear tone ever so slightly. She laughed again.

Deciding against getting involved in the little spat between students, Nyarla decided her precious time would best be spent tormenting James. And so, her eyes still sparkling, golden crescents, her calm smile still plastered upon her face, she stood up and walked through the cafeteria doors. The sound of her heels clacking against the hard floors pierced the air as she wandered through the hallway, her appearance still pleasant and calm, arms crossed in front of her chest. After what seemed like hours, but was only about ten minutes, she found what she was looking for. The twin doors marked 'infirmary'. Ooh, I heard dear James had a bit of an accident. Best to check up on him. She thought, her mental voice dripping with malice and sinister intent. The Outer God pushed them open and gracefully strode in, moving at inhuman speeds, taking great care to avoid little more than the most quiet whisper of the wind parting as she loved through the labyrinthine room, which seemed more like an entire hospital than a single infirmary. After several minutes of searching, she found who she was looking for. James's hospital bed, which he seemed to be laying in.

The Doom Prophet sauntered over, dainty, elegant hands at her sides. Reaching him, she kissed the attendant on the cheek and shooed him away, giving her and James total privacy. Most likely, the attendant believed she was going to 'comfort' him in her own very special way. How wrong said attendant was. Bending over the hospital bed in the quietest manner possible for a god that had existed since the dawn of time, she placed her hands upon the bed's railing and hovered, like a spectre, above James. She inclined her head until her lips were only a few hairs' width from his ear, and spoke.

"Hello there, dear." Nyarlathotep said, her voice sweet, dripping with sinister intent. Her tone was one of faux concern over his rather poor condition, as in reality she was enjoying his pain.

To anyone else, it would have been a blur of motion, with the appendages' mouths seeming to hang there unaffected for a moment before disconnecting along clean lines. At that point, Crowley broke up the fight. You know, by setting his hand on fire and punching Wilhelm or whatever it was he did. Kate sheathed the short blade, and addressed Crowley. "My apologies, Headmaster." she said. "I did not intend to make a mess." With that, she turned to Lazrian as if nothing had happened. "It was even easier than I'd thought. He didn't try to think at all, just blindly attacked. Like you on a bad day." she jested, recalling a self-defense class from a few days ago. "Of course, it was like you said. Hard to judge whether or not you've fought a worthy opponent when someone else intervenes."

"The Great and Mighty Lazrian doesn't have to think. When you think too much in battle, it just gives mighty ones like me more time to rend them asunder. I recall this fella in boot camp. Zerkinad. Thought himself a great strategic mind. Well, all his strategy did him diddly when I just smashed through his platoon, and disemboweled him with his own foot. Then made him eat the foot...what was I talking about again?"

"Thinking in battle." reminded Kate. "It takes precious time to plan out your attack. But I can think things through all I want, with my chronological alteration talents." she boasted. "Of course, not everyone can have my abilities." Kate paused for a moment. "I can show you what it's like, though, if you're interested in training against me. If I'm physically in contact with someone, I can speed them up as well." she offered, unable to resist a chance to show off her strength.

"Hello, Nyarla." James responded, quite bored already with her attempt at scaring the shit out of him, and instead focused on his coffee and newspaper. "Your same old schtick isn't going to scare me. I've faced horrors you only wish you could emulate. Now, kindly leave, I'm busy reading about the international man hunt for me and how they can't find any leads." He took a sip of his coffee and rustled the paper, not once looking at Nyarla. "Oh, and give Jade my regards."

Rayne simply followed Sari-chan. At least she was being sensible, and not engaging in the violence in the cafeteria. That would be a pain. Either she would hurt someone and feel bad, or get hurt. Either way, her girlfriend would be in pain, emotional or physical, and Rayne didn't like that concept. "Not really." Rayne said, looking around. She quickly added something else, lest she decide she wanted to cook, "I am full though, so nothing food related..." Rayne said, glad to add that in. She tasted Sari-chan's food every day, whether she wanted to, or not. And every time, unfailingly, she did her best to not show disgust.

"I'm still kinda hungry, but if you're fine, then we can do something else," Sari-chan responded, smiling at Rayne, "So, if you don't have any ideas, I guess we could always go hang out in the gym and get some more exercise. ...Or we could head back to the dorm and get a different kind of exercise! Yeah, that sounds like fun!"

Still holding Rayne's hand, Sari-chan made a beeline straight for the dorm, heading there at a remarkably quick pace, not waiting for a response from her girlfriend.

Maria sighed and checked her watch. Only a few more minutes for breakfast to be served and Frida was nowhere to be seen. She sighed dejectedly and walked into the cafeteria, grabbing several cartons of milk and taking them back to her seat. She was hoping to see Frida and ask her about the weird and highly confusing dreams she'd been having ever since starting to room with Rayne and Sari-chan. It'd been bad enough that they were so vivid she couldn't get them out of her mind. As the most recent one began to appear in her mind her face turned a deep shade of crimson.

Daisuke frowned. He would have raised a hand to help her up, but he didn't particularly wish to lift himself out of the wheelchair- that would be exhausting. But EVE was there, helping the gnome up. "What is your name?" she asked. The gnome continued to laugh a bit.

Daisuke shrugged. "Let's just take it to the medical bay." he offered. And to save details I'm too lazy to actually type out, that's pretty much what happened. Ellywick was healed up later, Crowley checking out to see if her story matched and nodding along. Being kidnapped by an evil android creature was pretty standard, to be honest. One of the more normal backstories around here.

Eventually Daisuke struck up a small friendship with Ellywick, basically asking if she wanted to help them build some robots. She accepted because Erin agreed to do so over TG. In any case, that's what happened- Daisuke, EVE and Ellywick began making robots together that collaborated with Asimov's Three Laws, as agreed upon earlier. Daisuke remained distant from his father and busy in his work.

In the rest of the school, classes went on normally. Life went on normally, or normally by Elfen High standards. A month or so passed. Daisuke woke up in his bed- which was just his wheelchair leaning back. Today was a big day- they were nearly done with the robots. He couldn't wait to show them to Crowley.

He had known about it before anyone else, but still....But Lewis seemed to be happy with his life, even if Minh barely comprehended it. James was outside, giving his car an inspection. Over the last month he had decided to apply himself to his "job" a little more. Well, a lot more. The school, inside and out, was cleaner than ever before. Even the other staff and student vehicles were clean. The grass was mowed, the trees and bushes trimmed, even the bathrooms were literally sparkling. His car, on the other hand, usually wasn't. The damn psycho rabbits kept shitting on it. He really had to talk with Crowley about that one of these days. At least it was clean right now.

He had continued avoiding Jade, Sarina, and Ivy as much as possible, which wasn't too much of a problem with the size of the school. Crowley also hadn't put him in the gladiator matches yet, which James didn't mind. He was slowly beginning to enjoy being at Elfen High again, although he tried his best to convince himself that this was an exile to Hell. Also during the previous month, James had carved himself a new staff, this one a much better improvement over the first. Plain as day, he still chose to nickname it the "Loki Ball Buster", in honour of the original.

Right now he was off-duty, and was underneath his Agera doing a bunch of automotive shit I don't have knowledge of. Just have someone come and say hi, preferrably Jade or Ivy. Later, though, as I'm going to bed soon. Probably. Depends.

Maria never got the chance to ask Frida about the dreams and as a result had started to become more and more neurotic and skittish, completely demolishing all of the progress she and Laz had made, and they'd made quite a bit of progress.

Maria never really woke up that morning. For the past week she'd been suffering from a lighter form of insomnia, and had had to listen to Sari and Rayne's nightly romps, which seemed to becoming closer and closer to her vivid dreams. But through out all of this she'd never made a peep and suffered silently. Unbeknownst to Maria, her control over her touch was slipping, it'd eaten through her socks and shoes leaving her barefoot and extended contact with her hands left the walls cracked and brittle.
She walked down the hall, looking like a through and through mess.

During the next month, Sari-chan started becoming...distracted. Every now and then, she'd have the same nightmare as before, the one with the cat, fox, and panther. It began to concern her, though she tried to hide it, not wanting Rayne to be worried. However, she isn't a very subtle person, and did a terrible job of it. So, Rayne could quite easily tell that something was wrong, but Sari-chan refused to say anything. It was her problem, and she didn't want to put any unnecessary burden upon her lover.

Beyond the dream, she continued on as normal, for the most part. She started taking her training a bit more seriously than before, though she couldn't say why. It was just something of a gut feeling. She just knew that at some point, something very bad would happen, and she'd need to be at her best to defend the ones she loved. Thus, she made sure to never miss self-defense class and would often times skip other classes in order to attend repeat defense classes at other points in the day. She also fought in the gladiator matches whenever there were robotic opponents. She still didn't approve of the fights, but she figured that as long as she didn't actually hurt anyone, they were fine.

That morning, the current day after the timeskip, Sari-chan again woke up screaming and drenched in sweat. It was the fifth time she had the nightmare now, and it wasn't getting any easier to handle.

Ellywick sat back and looked in satisfaction at her desktop computer, and at the latest revision of the robots' artificial intelligence programs. She wrote them very carefully and was constantly rewriting and refining. They had to be kept strictly limited. Computers couldn't be allowed to get too smart, ro too independent. Looking at her computer was a fairly pointless exercise, of course, since there wasn't much to see other than the machine itself, but it gave her some basic satisfaction. The PC had served her well, even if it wasn't exactly up to the standards of gnome tech. She hadn't bothered with a keyboard, mouse, or monitor. Ellywick interfaced with it on a more natural level. She did, however, decorate it with a number of smiley face and heart stickers that spelled out her name.

Ellywick. It was her name, of course, what else would it be? It had been so long since anyone said it, but it was in use again, taken out and dusted off, and still fit good as new. She had said it the first day she arrived, when the android EVE had helped her to her feet and asked her what her name was. There had been a moment of terror when she first saw the thing, its bionic fingers clutching her shoulders, its aqua green eyes gazing down at her. She had stammered out her name and pulled away. She could hear the computer that substituted its brain ticking over behind its simulacrum of a face. Her fear was stupid, of course, as she'd later come to realise. EVE wasn't SAM. EVE was harmless. Sweet, even. Ellywick was baffled by the way everyone around here treated it like a person, but it wasn't like it mattered.

Elfen High was... well, it was pleasant. The chaotic day-to-day affairs suited Ellywick perfectly. She found the classes genuinely interesting for the most part, even if the pace was a little slow for her. She enjoyed the company of the students and staff, even the one big demon Laz who had tried to eat her that one time. Headmaster Crowley was a fantastic authority figure. He reminded her a little of her grandmother. And this sideproject with Daisuke kept her occupied, especially now with the robots nearing completion. Things were, in a nutshell, rather too peaceful. For the first week, she had expected SAM to try to take her back at any moment, but it never happened. That made her more nervous. The machine obviously had no intention of halting its plans, whatever they were, so why no attempt at recapture? It could just be that Elfen High was too well defended for SAM to risk taking on, but still... that had been a very obvious hole in its security.
Not even Daisuke knew about her side-side project. The very special arsenal she had hidden away in her dorm.

Maria could only stutter and sob helplessly for a few minutes, before managing to burble out her recent dreams, which to Maria seemed scary, painful and involved Frida screaming a lot, which frightened the skittish Maria. Fortunately as Maria went on describing the scene it became more and more obvious that it was not scary or painful and that it was simply erotic, which was something little Maria had literally no experience in save for sunday school teachings. This of course did not stop Maria for bawling her eyes out.

Don't laugh Lazrian. Don't laugh. Don't...

It was a losing effort. Laz actually fell to his knees, laughing his demonic ass off. He laughed for a straight 15 seconds, before finally standing back up, wiping tears out of his eyes. He walked over, and threw an arm around her.

The melancholy of Frida

Postby Seshephe » Sat Sep 01, 2012 5:20 am

The last month had passed quickly for Frida. She had kept busy with her efforts to improve her
illusions and fighting skill and had participated in as many arena fights and training sessions as
possible. She now also spent an hour every morning, and an hour every evening meditating on her
illusions and how to use them in a combat situation. She didn't quite know why she had suddenly
found this extreme fascination with fighting, but it had kept her mind off other, more disturbing
matters. Such as the disturbing forms that the shapeshifting creature would take on, the fish tank
that she had accidentally run into one day on her way from sex-ed class or just the general weirdness
of everyone and everything in this strange place. Besides, she felt that she owed it to... someone?
Everyone? Herself? Crowley? Her family? Erika? Or perhaps Maria?, she didn't know, to prove that she
could master her curse, that it didn't have to be a danger to people. The irony of learning to control
it by learning to use it to hurt people somehow managed to evade her.

She reckoned that the only thing that had kept her sane this past month had been her comforting
friendship with Ciel, and Maria. Yet Ciel was always somewhat hard to talk to and recently Maria had
grown more... distant. As she contemplated these thoughts she unleashed her frustration on the
training dummy that she was fighting with and promptly turned it into tiny bits, furiously slicing away
with Eldtand.

Satisfied she lowered her weapon and teleported out of the school to a nearby tree where she had
hidden away a number of japanese waterstones. Kneeling down she assumed a stoic pose and began
ceremonially sharpening the blade. It was not really necessary, but she liked doing it. Gave her time
to think.

She had kept hanging out with Maria during this past month, yet despite the obvious attraction
between them Maria had seemed oblivious and Frida had not been able to build up the courage to
ask her out on a formal date. Recently though, Maria had begun to seem worried, and not quite
herself and it troubled Frida. She felt a little bit ashamed, it was not just Maria that had been a
little bit distant, truth be told, Frida to had been neglecting Maria a little lately.

She sat like this for almost an hour, she didn't mind missing breakfast, in fact it had recently become
something of a habit for her. The chirping of birds, the waving of the grass in the soft south-eastern
breeze and the comforting warmth of the morning sun all served to chill her nerves and help her to
relax and forget her troubles.

It had been over a month now. Over a month since she had heard from anyone back home. She knew
that there was no point in fretting over it. Perhaps the police had made sure that no one knew where
she had gone, perhaps Crowley had made sure that she didn't get any letters or communications from
back home or perhaps everyone back there just thought that she was some sort of dangerous mutant
freak and wanted nothing to do with her. Whatever the case was, there was no point fretting over it,
she didn't know and worrying about it would not help, she thought for the third time this hour.
She was a part of this world now, whether she liked it or not. Her old life inexorably over and gone,
robbed from her by fates cruel, unyielding hand. There was no point in grasping at straws. It was
better this way anyhow.

She sighed deeply and got up on her feet, making sure to fasten Eldtand securely on her back.

She began wandering aimlessly towards the school, making sure not to run into anyone by making
herself invisible whenever someone got near her. She did not even notice who or what it was that
she passed, too caught up in her own thoughts. She kept wandering the school aimlessly like this
for over an hour before she finally found herself standing in front of a door marked "Counseling".

'I've probably already missed the first class anyway' she thought melancholically.
'True, some of those counsellors scare me more than Laz or that shapeshitfing thing but... who knows,
I guess it couldn't hurt.'

Where am I.... he thought as he looked around, being suspended in a tank with bright green liquid in it, with strange tubes attached to him "It's awake, and seems to be showing signs of intelligent thought already" a man standing outside the tank looking at a computer, though his voice was muffled by the strange clear material the tank was made of. "Finally! They were about to shut down the Replicant Project, since every replica we've made before this one simply died in seconds or were mindless vegetables with no unique abilities whatsoever..." a different man said. "Now let's see, we're all the way down to W for names right? Hmm.....William sounds like a good name.." The voice this time was from a woman it sounded like. "Brain functions appear to be running smoothly. The new drug in the Fluid does seem to be increasing the amount if his brain that's active, although only by 2 or 3%." "That's all we need. Doctor Areillia, you can add the program now." "I told you, it's not just a program, she's an advanced auto-defensive A.I" the woman replied, sounding exasperated. William's head was suddenly torn with rending pain for a single instant, before a calm soothing feeling wafted through, relaxing everything in his body. "Auto-defence A.I Sheila installed ..." one of the scientists said before William's vision hazed again.....

William woke up back in his bed, his head feeling completely normal. What was that about? Was it a dream..or did that really happen?.. he thought. "I have no idea" Sheila responded mentally. "But I'd just assume you had a weird dream. Humans tend to have those." "And you don't?" William answered. Sheila only laughed. "I don't have time for dreams, my job is protecting you, especially when you're doing something like sleeping that makes you completely vulnerable" William got out of bed, and after a quick shower he started getting dressed, putting on blue jeans and a white T-shirt with a black jumper over it.

William walked down the hallway, wondering where to go. He decided he may as well go take a walk outside, get some fresh air and all that.

Maria stopped sobbing for a second, her face looking horrified and confused.
"But... But... But she was screaming! And she looked like she... was in pain..."
It was at that point where Maria displayed one of her hidden talents. The full face blush, where her entire face turns bright red, and she faints.
Needless to say this isn't an especially helpful thing to do but at the moment poor little Maria couldn't do anything about it.

Jade had spent the month teaching her class as normal, falling into a routine. Honestly, she was proud of Crowley, nothing seemed to have gone wrong. Yet. She wandered the halls, with no blade by her side, feeling fairly safe anyways. She had left James' shattered rapier on the floor of the self-defense gymnasium - someone would come along and clean it up - while her own was resting, still broken, inside its scabbard in her office. So she stepped along, her steps almost silent despite her brisk pace (for a normal human, she was merely on a stroll).

Rayne moved over to Sari-chan. She wrapped an arm around her girlfriend, hugging her. She knew she wouldn't talk about her nightmare, but Rayne still wanted to help. "You know you can tell me whats wrong." She said, despite that sentence being an exercise in futility, which Rayne knew very well over the past month. She had managed to make her sex ed class a bit less... random and unorganized. Sari-chan had seemed a bit disappointed for a day or so when she learned that sex ed no longer meant "Kiss your girlfriend" class, but the class (some of it) seemed to appreciate the structure.

Rayne briefly considered trying to use her charm power to get Sari-chan to talk about her dream, but that thought passed quickly. She had promised herself not to use that power unless it was absolutely required. Sari-chan wanted her privacy in this subject, and it was not Rayne's place to push in on it. It was, however, her place to try and comfort her. And right now, that meant giving her a hug, and hoping it made her feel better.
