Sari-chan was sitting in her chair, half paying attention to the teacher, while doodling in her notebook. She really didn't understand anything that he was saying, but she figured that she might as well take down a few notes between her pictures of various anime characters, some from real animes, some randomly made up on the spot. She hoped that either Rayne or Ivy could help explain it to her later.

Then again, that Japanese boy seemed to understand it, and he was Japanese. Sari-chan decided that she would ask him after class. He would surely help her.

Edward raised an eyebrow; He was a tad bit skeptical about the last part Minh had said, but decided commenting on how the headmaster here was a raging heterosexual probably wasn't a good idea with a teacher right there two desks in front of him unless he wanted something worse than a pencil thrown at him. "She's right, it's a bit odd that we're talking about them being natural and in the wild and all that, when they're artificially created mutants, and their habitat is a man-made school that nature could never design. But I see your point, " Edward answered.

The Japanese Russian pulled out a sword and put one of the dead rabbits burned by Laz and friends on his desk. He then immediately....cleaned his fingernails with the sword before putting it away and taking out a syringe. He placed it into the dead rabbit and it sucked up some blood, as syringes tend to do.

He then placed a drop of blood underneath a microscope. "Part of what Sachin had done was alter the mitochondria of the rabbits. You see, mitochondrion are cellular power generators. Inherited from your mother, these things convert energy into forms the cell can use. They're located near the cytoplasm and are also responsible, in part, for cell division. Generally, mitochondria are semi-autonomous in that they are only partially dependent on the cell to replicate and grow. They have their own DNA, ribosomes and can make their own proteins. Sachin altered the mitochondrion, making something which is completely different and much more effective."

"The rabbits' mitochondria now produced an entirely different form of DNA, making them tougher, stronger and faster growing. They also became very long lived, as far as we can assume- it's only been a year, but it seems that only violence or illness was able to kill any of them."

But that was just interesting trivia I gave you and I don't expect you to know that stuff for a test- maybe you'll see some of that if you decide to take something like biomedical engineering in university, but I doubt any of you give a crap."

Minh went on with an explanation of how mitochondria worked, which I'm sure would be absolutely thrilling to some of you, but the majority of you don't give a crap.

"In short, mitochondria produce ATP, cell energy. ATP production by the mitochondria is done by the process of respiration, which in essence is the use of oxygen in a process which generates energy. The rest of it is in your book. Do some of that reading. When you go to your next class, try to not to be killed by mutated rabbits. It must be a relief to know just how they were mutated into horrific monsters." he said dryly.

"Any questions or do you all still not give a crap?" he asked.

"I want to ask a question, please!" Hildegard said, raising her hand. She had woke up only minutes ago after a night of deep slumber, but seemed energic as ever.

"Could someone potentially boost the capabilities of mitochondria with scientifical or even magical means? Higher cell energy could mean higher cell reproduction rates, which could mean also higher healing rates. Actually, now that I think of it, do regenerative powers influence cell reproduction rate?"

"Well, like Edward just said, they're man-made creatures, which would mean that we are a part of their natural food chain, and this school is their natural habitat. They have no other natural environment. But I see where you're coming from. Until we can estimate their population, we can't know for sure if we're killing them too much, or maybe even too little. I'm assuming we also don't know what resources they use, which would mean estimating their carrying capacity would be even more difficult." He shrugged. "In other words, we have a lot of data to gather."

He then chuckled at Hildegard's question. "You would have to change the genes in two ways. Change the genes that control the amount of times cells replicate, alternatively, you can change the telomeres of the chromosomes, and then you would have to change the genes that regulates cell replication and the shortening of the telomeres."
"The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders. raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did."—former Nixon domestic policy chief John Ehrlichman

Though the discoveries about the rabbits was knew to her, she knew all the rest of the science mentioned and was hoping the teacher would teach more complicated stuff. The comment about them most likely not giving a crap made her look at the other students with a frown. She wished the class was taught for those that actually were interested. Did it really matter if they were interested?

When the teacher threw the pencil at the guy called James, she looked back at him, when she turned her head back to face the teacher, she caught the eye of a guy called Izanagi. She head what he was saying and nodded.

"But this school isn't exactly what you'd call a natural environment either." she piped up. "I mean, I'm not sure how many there are, but at the rate I've seen some people finishing them off, there won't be many left soon."

"So we need stronger and tougher rabbits. Darwin's law of natural selection wasn't proven wrong when people discovered magic existed- in contrast, it was proven right. The stronger rabbits will survive you wiping them out, the weaker ones will die out. This is how evolution has worked. The animals who survived are the ones who bred into the species that occupy the Earth today. Hell is a constant example of this in progress. And so the rabbits who survive will be the smart ones, the ones who learn to avoid students and staff." Minh said. "It may seem cold and unfair, but this is what life is and you're seeing it in progress."

"Trust me on this- the theory still applies here. This is their habitat. Raccoons and pigeons have adapted to city life. Cities are unnatural, certainly. But they still adapted. There was a species of moth during the Industrial Revolution- the name escapes me- which had members of both white and black wings. The Industrial Revolution was a polluted time, and the black winged moths thrived because they disguised themselves well
in the black soot. The white wings died. They adapted to an unnatural event. The rabbits live here. They adapt here as well."

"Correct, excellent work. Of course, I just said that when I said Sachin messed with the mitochondria, but good thinking anyway." Minh said dryly. "Yes, regeneration usually does affect cell reproduction rate." Minh pulled his sword out and casually chopped his left hand off. It started growing back rapidly. "My power involves my cells growing back very quickly. It's a useful skill."

Hildegard moved an hand over her mouth, suppressing a small giggle when Minh chopped his own hand off. She still felt somewhat prideful of having been complimented by the teacher for his thinking.

"Excuse me, teacher, but what would our homework be?" Hilde asked, making a small smile while speaking. Biology was interesting for her, and she wouldn't have had problems in executing homework of. Also, if the teacher would have asked them to vivisect a rabbit, she would have gladly done this to Meister, since she was growing bored with it.

"That's a good point. As long as the smart ones are quick in learning that." she said with a smile. "I know that a creature's natural habitat can be man-made, but it's more the fact of not being sure how many we can kill. Because I did not think it was a matter of seeing how well they adapt, but rather, simply seeing how long they live."
she nodded.

Getting to her feet, she glanced over at Izanagi. Waiting to see if he would talk to her.

And now for something entirely different.

Lewis had a brilliant night's sleep, the best he had had since he took the job at Elfen High. He couldn't get any rest without punching something and James had absorbed just enough blows to put Lewis on the mellow train to Hypnopolis. He would have to thank him for that during class, before beating the shit out of him in front of everyone. He rose from his bed and dressed in his work outfit; his jeans, hat, and sunglasses. So, Lewis might not be the most well-dressed guy, or the most of anything positive, but fuck you, bears.

Anyway, Lewis made himself a nice little breakfast from a baby mutant rabbit he found hiding in the toilet of the eighth floor men's bathroom, charring it with his heat vision and picking it off the bone like particularly good barbeque. Lewis had decided many years ago that rabbit meat and booze were the signs of a truly successful man; a man who had succeeded in bliss. He had eaten his breakfast there, on the floor of the bathroom, which surprised many of his neighbors. His neighbors could go fuck themselves; bratty teenagers, the lot of them. It was almost like this fucking high school was built for the bastards. Once he was done, he discarded the bones by throwing them into some random kid's backpack and then made his way to some room Crowley wanted him to spend the day in, "teaching" the kids "material", like some kind of glorified baby-sitters. Lewis simply sat on his desk, swiveling in his chair, and trying to figure out why that small TV was attached to a humming black box of death. Lewis did not trust the black box of death. It looked at him funny.

"Fucking witches," Lewis grumbled as he embedded a big board with letters within the black box of death like a harpoon in a whale. He then spent the rest of the period playing his banjo. He didn't have any students until third period, whatever that meant.
"Then I was fertilized and grew wise;
From a word to a word I was led to a word,
From a work to a work I was led to a work."
- Odin, Hávamál 138-141, the Poetic Edda, as translated by Dan McCoy.

I enjoy meta-humor and self-deprecation. Annoying, right?

Goodbye.

Edward smiled and nodded "I see what you mean, that makes sense. Thanks fir answering my questions sir, " Edward said as he gathered his things, keeping his biology textbook on his desk and opening it up to start the reading homework assigned. He looked around wondering if he should go talk to someone. Well, there's time for that later I suppose. Best to just get this done now he thought as he began reading, his eyes quickly flowing over the pages and taking in details and general concepts alike with astonishing efficiency

Laz had been zoned out during the whole class, and was seriously questioning why he came here.

And humans say demons are sadistic. This...class, is one of the most evil forms of torture I've ever seen. How one doesn't lose their mind sitting here is a mystery. Oh well, at least they provide free snacks. Should make it all worthwhile.

The "Snack" was his biology textbook, which he took a nice, big bite out of.

"Kinda bland. Could use a little barbeque sauce."

Noticing class was apparently over, he marched out of the room, making sure to kick the door off when he left.

Shissk sat in the back of the classroom, half listening to Minh's lecture. She understood some of what she paid attention to, but didn't see the point of any of it. The only interesting part was when he cut off his own hand, and that was over quickly. Shissk was slightly jealous of that kind of power. If she could do that, she might not have ended up here. Memories swirled up; flashes of dark things stirring in the depths; of blood in the water; of a mad dash into the light. She shook her head, dispelling the unpleasant thoughts, and distracted herself with her textbook. Mr. Franks had taught her to read. She could do it, albeit slowly, if she kept her finger under the line of text. Like all of this, however, it just seemed futile.

"Raccoons and pigeons have adapted to city life. Cities are unnatural, certainly." Minh had said "But they still adapted." Shissk wasn't given to irony, but she smiled bitterly at that and tried to concentrate on the words. She wondered if anyone had asked the raccoons and pigeons how easy it had been to adapt, and if they had found it terribly boring.

The night passed more slowly for others. While many surrendered themselves to the soothing bosom of their pillows and a realm of dreams, Allan felt the torment of decades tear through his soul, chilling his body to the bones. His dreams offered no safe sanctuary for his thoughts, but rather proved to be cold and inhospitable. The years made him resilient though, and he was no less a veteran of his own dreams; whether haunted or not, they held no more terrors for him.

Allan wearily opened his eyes. Another night had passed, uneventful. It seemed his demons would let him pass another day unhindered by their madness. His old bones protested as he forced them to the edge of his bed, finally dropping them to the ground like loaded bags of stone. In an absent minded gaze he stared at the fading twilight at the horizon as light began to dominate the cloudless morning skies. With a mild effort he stood up, using the bedside cupboard as his support. In his drowsy half-slumbering haze he bumped his knee against the cabinet, jolting a sharp pain through his entire leg that seemed to reverberate throughout his entire body. A curse barely managed to escape his lips, followed by an abrupt kick to one of the legs of the wooden piece of furniture; the sheer force broke the support and the cabinet struggled for balance on it's three remaining feet, but the weight of books that Allan had placed inside the wooden storage unit was simply too much for it too bear. Throwing the contents on top of it all over the floor in a random pattern, the cabinet surrendered to gravity and fell on its side, revealing its contents as it opened.

"Little piece of-" Allan mumbled furiously, glaring at the piece of woodwork as he gathered a few books and put them in his leather bag; it was nearly antique by the looks of it, but then again that might be the reason why he preferred it.

Breakfast was brief, Allan never really took much time to appreciate it. His years of irregular sleep and meals had faded his appreciation of these things, which others deemed to self-explanatory. Perhaps it was because they were raised with milk and luxury while he spent his life surviving on just the necessities. It made these children careless and unwary.

The first class was about to end, so Allan had better hurry. He grabbed his bag and locked his room behind him, heading for his assigned classroom where he started to set up everything for his own class.

Hildegard made her way to the classroom where the next lesson was supposed to take place. Needless to say, she was quite pleased to know that the teacher would have been Mr Ramius. Sure, she was still quite interested of History as a subject, but being teached by such an experienced mage was the real draw, for her.

She stepped quietly in the classroom, Fluffymeister still roaring in her backpack. Hilde sat at the first desk, the one closer to Allan's desk, putting her textbook over it.
"Good day, Mister! What are we going to study, today?" she asked, giving a small smile and looking directly into his eyes.

Shissk left as soon as the next lesson was due to start, making it out the door before most of her classmates despite being seated at the back of the room. It was a relief to put away the infernal block of paper. The author definitely had not written it for barely literate sea creatures. She took out her bottle as she walked and gave a generous blast of water to her head, shoulders and chest, leaving a dripping trail behind her in the hallways.

The next lesson was history, which bored her as much as biology, but the teacher was another matter. Allan Ramius was... well, Allan. He had been the one to come to Mr. Franks’ place when he’d contacted Elfen High about enrolling her. She’d first seen him through the glass of a tank, his wrinkled old hand resting on the other side. He'd nodded to her as if he recognised her. She still hadn't gotten used to human facial cues at the time, and even if she had, his face didn't betray much emotion. But there was that brief, curt nod as if some information had passed silently and instantly between them. Looking back, she understood what it meant. Here he was, old and worn out, probably not many years left to him. He had seen many things in his life. That was obvious to anyone who spent a few minutes with him. But when he first laid eyes on Shissk, he was seeing something he never expected to see again. Something that, like him, might soon disappear. Shissk was eight years old before she met another member of her species. She doubted she would meet another one again. Allan’s nod was a recognition of fellowship, from one relic to another. If only she had understood, if only she had given some return signal. But the moment was lost and neither of them mentioned it in their few moments of contact after that day.

She threw a furtive glance his way as she entered the classroom. He looked tired. By the time she had reached her seat in the front row, the girl with the rabbit who had kicked the machine last night was already chattering away at him. Shissk sat down silently and turned her gaze downward, avoiding the eye contact with the other students, who she neither liked nor trusted. Water was already dripping onto her desk.

"Ah, the loquacious lass." Allan retorted as he dropped his heavy leather bag, which bore quite some resemblance to the old doctor's satchel. The desk squirmed as gravity forced the weight of books onto its unstable metal frame, having withstood years of torment from previous teachers. As it dropped down, the leather mastodon tilted on its side and several books fell out. Only one of them had a clearly visible title, the others either covered by another or with their backs turned to the light; it read Famous Russian Submarine Captains. Not only did the plump piece of literature make anyone wonder how many famous Russian submarine captains there were, but also why Mr. Ramius had this book on him.

"I'll be teaching you about history, dear." Allan explained before he realized she probably already knew that much. "The subject which I'll talk about today will remain a secret until the class starts"

A brief wink and Allan walked to his seat behind the desk, where he sat down and waited for the rest of the students. Shissk caught his eye, whom he had already met prior to his arrival yesterday; but he wasn't going to make conversation. Instead, he reached into the satchel and gathered his material for the subject of today's class, which he had carefully picked out with a dartboard and several wood peckers.

Seeing as how everyone else was going to the next class, Edward closed his biology book and neatly put it in his bag. He was practicality finished with the homework assignment anyway, so it wouldn't take that long to complete reading the last part tonight. He walked down the hallway, carefully avoiding the mysterious puddles on the floor, and stepped into Allan's class, sitting down in the third row back from the front.

The night had passed without event, and Sari-chan woke up in quite a good mood. Maybe it was the soft, comfortable bed, maybe it was the cuddling with Rayne, or maybe it was just excitement over the coming school year. Either way, Sari-chan was feeling better than ever and was quite ready for classes to begin, hoping that she'd learn many interesting things and have fun with her new friends.

Refreshed and revitalized after the night sleep, she woke up before either of the other two and quite a bit before classes were to start, so she decided to use the extra time for some cooking, to celebrate the three of them becoming roommates. Skipping down the halls, she made her way to the cafeteria and went straight into the kitchen without even caring that students weren't allowed back there, not that the chefs protested. They were too busy cowering in terror and hoping that Sari-chan wouldn't fuck with the food for the other students.

Zooming around the kitchen at the speed of jump cut, Sari-chan grabbed up a wide variety of different ingredients, spices, and cleaning detergents, most of which she couldn't identify, and threw them together, deciding to make some Belgian waffles. Of course, she didn't know what Belgium was and only partially knew what waffles were, but she did know that people liked them both. So, that was enough for her.

A fowl stench emanated from the kitchen, causing the chefs to flee in disgust, and causing the students in the dining area to do likewise, many of them also vomiting. Profusely. After a while, Sari-chan finally finished the waffles and began heading back to the dorm room, carrying the tray down the halls, she filled the school with a scent that would make even Death, itself, shudder. Naturally, she was completely oblivious to this and figured that she had flawlessly succeeded in her stated goal.

Upon reaching the dorm, she burst open the door and stepped in, letting out a loud, "Gooooood morning!"

Of course, the other girls had already been woken by the smell. Even someone without a nose couldn't sleep through that abomination. Walking over to the table, Sari-chan set down the tray and removed the lid, revealing what looked to be a mound of charred, tentacled ooze that appeared to be alive as a few eyes blinked.

"Come on Raye-Raye-chan and Ivy-chan! I made us Belgain waffles!" she said, innocently smiling.

----------

Now that biology was finally over, Sari-chan hopped out of her chair to go talk to the Japanese boy, only to find him already talking to someone else. Momentarily dejected, she decided, instead, to head over and talk to Rayne. She didn't know if her roommate was any good with this stuff, but she had to be better than herself. Sari-chan didn't get it at all.

"Hello, Raye-Raye-chan!" she greeted, leaping onto Rayne's desk and wiggling her tail, "How are you doing? Do you like school so far? Are you any good at this science thing? I'm not. Could you help me? I'm really stuck. I don't understand anything. What are these 'mida...mido...midechoria...midachro...midi...midichlorian' things? They sound complicated."

Although, that's probably why you looked bored. Going over things you already know can be tedious.

Realizing he was sort of ranting, he stuck out his hand and smiled. "Name's Izanagi."

Her initial reaction was to regret waiting to see if he would talk to her, as she found herself feeling uncomfortable. But she pulled herself together somewhat and shook hands with Izanagi
"I know." she murmured softly. "I'm Izera. And yes, I was bored because I already know it all. I know a lot more than you'd expect, but that's a long story. I'm just sad the teacher didn't go into more detail, regardless of what the majority wanted. I was hoping to learn something." Still speaking in a soft voice, which was how she mostly talked, hardly ever raising her voice.
She gathered her stuff together.
"Shall we go to the next class?"

With the class over, James slowly, almost instinctively, got out of his seat and headed for the next one. He wasn't consciously aware of what room that was, what class it was, or who the teacher was, but he made it there. Grabbing the first seat he found, he set his head down and continued napping.

While shaking hands with Izera, Izanagi said, "Really? You do? Well, that just makes me feel bad for not knowing your name." He smiled again. "Sorry." He began walking with her to the next class when he exclaimed, "Oh! It would help if I brought my History book." He turned around and located his desk. He then kicked the floor and his desk began shaking until it seemed to jump into the air, "throwing" the books into the air. Izanagi caught it and turned back around. "Alright, now we can go." Izanagi exited the room and began walking the hall to the next class with Izera.

Edward saw the guy who had been sleeping last period stumble into the room and sit down next to him. "Hey, wake up, " he said softly, lightly poking him to gain his attention. "I don't think sleeping in this guy's class is such a good idea....."

Pierre trudged behind him, dodging the falling door.

"So, what did you think about the biology class? I thought it was interesting. Took a page or two of notes. Quite fascinating, really. In fact, perhaps that's why I'm invincible. That coul-"

He noticed that Laz was chewing up his biology book. He sighed.

"I take it that they don't teach biology in Hell, and that you're going to fail this class. So, Laz, could you tell me a bit more about Hell? It sounds interesting."

"It's a... talent I have. Don't feel bad, I haven't actually told my name to anyone before you, so how could you know it." she said smiling shortly. She waited as he went to get his book, watching from the door of the classroom. She nodded behind his back, observing his actions, taking good note of what he did. She returned her face to a normal expression when he turned around and nodded.
They arrived on time to the next class, history. She went to sit at the same position on the front row as in the first class, though off to one side, to eagerly await the start of the class, with her potential friend, Izanagi.

Namekus looked up at the PA speaker and sighed. Another day gone to waste on the mortal plane. You COULD have stayed with your mother, who had access to Fenrir's domain. Shut up. Infinite amounts of prey and plenty of females. Shut up. If you would listen to yourself, you'd be much better off. Food and females. I hate you both.

Namekus dropped to all fours as his form shifted again. Dejectedly, he walked out of the assembly hall and went in search of an empty dorm room. After nearly walking in on the monkey-man and some other student, he finally found a quiet room and hopped up on the bed. "What a day" he muttered.
