Any flight can beat any other flight.

Smythe's entire schtick is that he has a lot of knives, can use them highly effectively (and can use a short-spear (i.e. bayonet tipped rifle) very well) and is a sociopath who doesn't really care who he stabs.

Beyond that, he's a roughly generic British soldier who legitimately is like a battle butler. Just ask Page - Smythe made him and Major Birch some coffee in the middle of the desert. So don't try and take away the one thing Smythe excels at.

I'm sick of multiculturism! Oh....wait.....I British a British foreign exchange student that appears to taken a liking to me....or she just wants to piss her father off by dating a German....

Lemme clear it up:
The people at the top of the flight lists (Page, obviously, Pat, Monroe, and Silva) are the flight leaders. They're ES veterans, and have the appropriate rank.
The rest of the people in the flights are NOT being ranked. It's entirely inconsequential in terms of "rank)if you're Sword 7 or 8, if you get my drift.
And UKP, Silva is not a newbie, at least in the course of the narrative - he came along for Operation Falkland, before you were even in the squadron. He then left for Guillotine and Mordred, and came back in the middle of Cambyses.
