The year is 2060. Change has swept the Earth, and beyond, and is still doing so. Humanity shares the Solar System with modified humans, sapient AIs and robots, uplifted animals, and other varied types of people. At the same time, secessionist and confederalist movements have changed the political make-up of Humanity's homeworld: nations such as Cornwall, Sul, Azawad, the Siberian Union, Tibet, Kashmir, East Turkestan and many others have emerged, while other nations have come together, to form the East African Federation, the South American Union, and the Union of Southern States. Cybergovernments have advanced to form fully-fledged virtual states, with no physical location, but huge populations and GDPs in some cases. Arguments rage as to whether the Nordic Co-operative Area, and the Arab Union, qualify as nations, or as international unions. Floating cities are quickly becoming centres of learning and finance. At the same time, strange new countries appear, such as the Republic of Atlantis, a Merfolk, sapient dolphin and marine robot populated nation, and the subterranean robot societies of Antarctica. Beyond the Earth, tens of millions of people form diverse societies, many of them still in the formative stages. Although civilization is still confined to the Solar System at present, there is still far more space at its disposal than ever before. Many colonies, habitats and bodies are corporate-owned, populated by employees, contracters, and people engaging in subsidiary companies. However there are also a handful run by national governments back on Earth, and a growing number of independent worlds. Untold thousands of comet-states have become independent, running their own extremely diverse societies in space, spreading slowly from asteroid to asteroid, greening the Universe one rock at a time. Independence movements in the planetary sub-systems have also achieved some measure of success, and there are independent nations present in the orbital swarms around Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and even Uranus. A few tiny kingdoms, republics, cyber-societies and so forth have established themselves in the Kuiper Belt, and are rapidly spreading outwards into the diffuse Oort Cloud.
In such a time, any nation could have a prosperous future, with the prize being a stake in the future of all civilization, as it spreads like a swarm of locusts throughout the Universe.
