Judge Luis entered from his chamber and sat down at his podium and set out his case notes, joined by the rest of the panel. He leaned forward and gestured to the bailiff. "Open the court and bring everyone in." At that the bailiff strode across the marble floors and opened the doors and spoke into the lobby, "The Superior Court of Leishaagen will now hear the case of Commonwealth v. Kruger." he said looking down at his clipboard.

Pete Meitner sat arrayed in the finery of his court attire; a gray suit that gleamed slightly and a maroon tie that was secured to his creamy shirt by a gold pin. He was not of course here in particular deference to Marius, rather he had his own private interests in the legal arena. Since this was probably the most important trial this far in the nation's short life, he though it best that he be present and involved. There are only so many entries in a history book and most of them are firsts; thus Peter was here in hopes of being in one of those first entries.

Kruger wore a suit tailored from expensive fabric. At stake was his reputation, not to mention his life as he knew it. The charges against him were false, he knew, and his legal team was competent enough to get an acquittal. Still, though, Kruger had lingering doubts about the partiality and justness of the Aurentine Justice system. As in all new countries, with all new legal institutions, the system was untested and imperfect. It would be just as likely for him to be found guilty on a technicality as it would for him to be acquitted based on the evidence. Still, all that remained to be seen, and Kruger was prepared for a long, hard trial.

"I don't think that this judge understands that this is just a preliminary hearing..."

Judge Hawthorne folded his arms his robes shuffling, "I think the prosecutor assumes too much." he then cleared his throat, "will the prosecution please bring forward their case letters." [Referring to 3d of the criminal procedure.]

Bridger enters the courtroom, since everyone else has. An unfiltered cigarette hangs from his lips, its thick grey smoke drifting upward as he walks swiftly to his seat. His security remains outside, with the vehicles. As he sits down, he smooths his jacket; the Savile Row suit was smooth and rich to the touch. He would be attending a meeting tonight, and already looked not his best, but the best.

Removing the cigarette, he glanced down at his several-hundred-thousand-dollar wristwatch, wondering when the hearing would begin. His friend, Kruger, was being falsely charged; Lord knew that Bridger himself had dealt with the police many a time, and he knew the Iron Party Chairman had the best legal counsel available.

Bridger continued smoking, not giving a fuck as usual. Since he had no prior charges and was a prominent senator, he'd be given a warning and told to put it out. So be it. At least it hadn't been banned in public or in restaurants.

Minister Dellafoca sat down near the front of the courtroom. He had a vested interest in the case; it was the first big-name trial to occur under his ministry, and he knew its outcome would affect the reputation of Aurentina's court system throughout his term, if not beyond.

As people sat there, the doors at the back opened and a Gendarme walked down the aisle of the court room. Walking up to Mr Bridger, he leaned down to keep his voice to an unobtrusive level. "Excuse me, sir, I'm going to have to ask you to stop smoking in this court room or be ejected." He said, gesturing to the door where another pair of Gendarmes waited - perfectly willing to drag him bodily from the court house if needs be.

[OOC: Sorry, but looking at the constitutions new procedure I must call for the defense first.]

IC: "Will the defendant please step forward." he would wait for Kruger to step forward with his attorneys "For the charges of Sedition, Espionage, and 1,500 counts Complicity in Attempted Murder in the 1st Degree, 200 counts of complicity in Attempted Manslaughter." The elderly judge glanced up through his glasses at the defendant.

He then glanced at the Gendarme. "Mr.Bridger please do as he says or I will be compelled to find you in contempt of court."

James Brit entered the courtroom and seated himself in the public area. He spotted several other key political figures, an observation which showed the significance of a case like this. James didn't like Kurger, and in a way he hoped he was guilty, but it was the arrest of Tom Schmidt that had led to him to become interested in the ongoing events.
