British English is widely stereotyped as pretentious in the states.

My experience is that it's thought of as incorrect, and I get points off on my papers... >:(

So what's American English? Crude?

Statements like that are probably why people see British English as pretentious.

I'm saying that if people are going to consider British English pretentious, they should see American English as the exact opposite of pretentious.

I think it's mostly just because of cultural perceptions and stereotypes.

There's nothing pompous about using a British English spelling.

I use British English spelling as much as I can, taking the linguistic and cultural heritage to heart, but "arse" is trying too hard for me. I've always lived outside of the UK and with people from a very international community, so that's probably why. If you've been living in England ever since birth, you probably wouldn't notice the effects spelling the word like that has, but as a British person I must acknowledge that, indeed, it doesn't feel like the write way to say it. I mean, with a Southern accent, you can still pronounce "ass" as "arse", the way I seem to do it, so it's not that big of a deal, really.

West Country English, the Queen's English is very refined compared to our rhotic western drawl.
