SC Proposal: Commend International Debating Area

Postby Freeland Newworldia » Sun May 14, 2017 4:16 pm

The Security Council hereby...

Applauds the ingenious idea of the founding nations of the Debating Area in creating a place in which nations of all political persuasions can debate on a variety of different topics.

Applauds the creation of the Debating Times, a program in which nations not resident in the Debating Area can be updated on the debates.

Applauds the creation of records of previous debates, which allow for nations new to the region to see the world's view on a variety of topics.

Applauds the reaching out of the region's leading nations to other regions, including giving welcome messages to regions that establish embassies with the Debating Area, so that the Debating Area can be truly global in scope. Applauds the fact that the region establishes embassies in regions indiscriminate of regional political persuasions.

Applauds the fact that the debates are open to any nation in the world, even nations in regions without embassies in the Debating area.

Recognizes the fact that the Debating Area has been able to uphold a leadership of nations of varying ideological backgrounds, even when there have been many disagreements between nations in the region.

Notes the fact that the Security Council should recognize regions that have made significant positive contributions to world affairs.

Therefore, the Security Council commends the International Debating Area.

It appears that you've already submitted this proposal. I implore that you withdraw it (by clicking on the "Delete Proposal" button below the list of approvals and the "Voting Ends" date), continue to draft the resolution here, and submit it after getting feedback, and then waiting to get any more. You see, it's complex. It's getting late in Britannia, so somebody more well-versed in the Security Council than I can elaborate.

Ok, I'm new to the process but this makes sense. I think I'll keep it up for tonight to see what people think of it, and I will then withdrawal it if it's not picking up much steam.

You can keep it here to garner comments, etc, you just need to take it out of the queue.
Never underestimate the power of cynicism, pessimism and negativity to prevent terrible things from happening. Only idealists try to build the future on a mountain of bodies.

The Thing to Remember About NationStates is that it is an almost entirely social game - fundamentally, you have no power beyond your own ability to convince people to go along with your ideas. In that sense, even the most dictatorial region is fundamentally democratic.

So basically you're asking us to commend a region for being a one trick pony, that is having large inter-regional discussions.

I'm sorry, but I don't think the SC should be in the business of commending a region for mass debating.

It's an interesting idea, but it's not like NationStates is lacking in places to have debates.

I'm not sure this merits commendation.

It's not an ingenious idea. Some other people came up with it first. I don't know if you or the people in that region have heard of it. It's called the General forum and it was made by this site's administrators.

Freeland Newworldia wrote:Applauds the creation of the Debating Times, a program in which nations not resident in the Debating Area can be updated on the debates.

You're proposing that we commend a region because they inform others about the updates in their region. Well, this means that every single region with a gamplay embassy in the Gameplay forum should be commended, then.

Freeland Newworldia wrote:Applauds the creation of records of previous debates, which allow for nations new to the region to see the world's view on a variety of topics.

It is not commendable for a region to keep records of its events.

Freeland Newworldia wrote:Applauds the reaching out of the region's leading nations to other regions, including giving welcome messages to regions that establish embassies with the Debating Area, so that the Debating Area can be truly global in scope.

You're asking that we commend this region for its foreign affairs. I guess every region with an embassy also deserves a commendation.

Being open-minded is a good trait. But it is not enough for a commendation.

Freeland Newworldia wrote:Recognizes the fact that the Debating Area has been able to uphold a leadership of nations of varying ideological backgrounds, even when there have been many disagreements between nations in the region.

I'll rephrase the above quote: "Good job for existing despite the fact that everyone in your region fights all the time." No, it's not commendable.

Freeland Newworldia wrote:Notes the fact that the Security Council should recognize regions that have made significant positive contributions to world affairs.

The positive contributions of this region have yet to be proven. It's RMB seems to be active, but it's very reminiscent of a chat thread. The region is less than 3 months old. To me, commendations are one of the highest achievements that one can receive in this game, if not the highest achievement. I do not any see any reason why this extremely new region should be given this great honor.

In short, International Debating Area does not deserve to be commended.
