The government of Saint-Sebastian endorses the MCFP. We do this knowing full well that is unlikely that the Party will form government and even if it did, or became member of a colaition, the party would almost immediately splinter between those who support the literal party-platform and those who treated their candidacy as a self-aware farce. Given the socially rightward slant of the Zanannian political spectrum voting for a radical party with a pro-prostitution agenda would serve to creative a civil discourse about other tabboo subjects including, no doubt, homosexuality. It might also serve to destablise the political elite and dislodge the political spectrum from the right. A radical/joke party that emerges outside the system and with a limited platform would feel compelled to continue its original intention; to voice discontent with the status que and thus serve the primary interests of Saint-Sebastian, the promotion of gay rights.

Their is however also the risk that upsetting the political status que may jepardise the ability of the government of the day to focus on developing good relations with Saint-Sebastian. It is hoped that a left-ward trend in Zanannian politics will open up the oppurtunity to pursue economic relations with the country and ours and to secure good will and the peace.

(OOC: I apologize for my absence. Due to the fact that I neglected this thread, the election deadline has been moved to March 18, 2012 in context, and March 18, 2011 in real time.)

The elections continue! This Friday, March 18, has been set as the new deadline! Please vote, and if you have any questions, please ask the PM candidates! They are:

1. Anne-Thérèse Challoner (NCP), who is the current PM from Joduscus.
2. Gustave Defraine (PP), the senior assemblyman from Helo Illyvio.
3. Lionel Paquet (NSPZ), the long-time NSPZ leader from Cylontium. Seen as an outside choice.
4. Cécile Clavet (MCFP), the junior assemblywoman from Niamoci.

The polls currently show:
National Conservative Party: 29%
Progressive Party: 33%
National Socialist Party: 11%
Meat Comes First Party: 27%

I support a healthy mixture of faith and logical reasoning. I realize that may mean something different to you, but I really don't care. I can be dissuaded through a logical argument. I'm fun to be around, but if you annoy me I will cut you.
Just kidding, I don't care as long as you aren't rude... :)

Also, here is the current list of statements made by the candidates:

Clavet: "Well, I think that people have started to realize an important fact: that politics are stupid. Let's face it, no one cares about conservatism, liberalism, progressivism, or absolutism. Most political parties are all the same. They simply want to be in power, then they don't give a flying flip about what the people want. The MCFP is not about politics. It's about giving the people what they want. And the people want MEAT, DAMMIT!"

I support a healthy mixture of faith and logical reasoning. I realize that may mean something different to you, but I really don't care. I can be dissuaded through a logical argument. I'm fun to be around, but if you annoy me I will cut you.

As a Libertarian nation, we are torn between the Conservative and Progressive Parties. Our Government openly supports the NCP in hopes of free trade amongst us soon.

To respond to the concerns raised by the government of Saint-Sebastian, our candidates have issued statements regarding their stances on homosexuality and gay rights.

Challoner: I thank God every day that I live in this glorious country of Zanannia. A country that lets you live your life without government interference. A country that allows people to believe whatever they want to believe, and govern their own lives as they see fit. That's why two years ago I signed a bill into law that allowed gay marriage in Zanannia. We as a nation decided that discriminating against people because of their sexual orientation is wrong on all levels, and that it was something that needed to be fixed. I believe that's all I have to say on this issue.

Defraine: I agree wholeheartedly with Miss Prime Minister. Being one of the co-authors of the Sexual Orientation Equality Act, I can say that I support equal rights in Zanannia.

Paquet: Unfortunately, the idealistic policies of my opponents will prove to be their downfall. There is no such thing as "equal rights". One group will always dominate over another group. And in our current government, the people of Zanannia are being represented by vicious Jewish snakes! They only do what will best serve them, coiling themselves up into lustful orgy masses of immorality and greed. If we allow such nonsense to continue, there is no hope for Zanannia. I believe homosexuality to be a mortal sin, and a most impure deed. People who practice homosexuality have also been scientifically proven more likely to worship Satan. They must be destroyed!

Clavet: I love gays! You know, cuz I'm a lesbian. But I only love carnivorous gays, not the bony vegan kind that smell like a pharmacy.

I support a healthy mixture of faith and logical reasoning. I realize that may mean something different to you, but I really don't care. I can be dissuaded through a logical argument. I'm fun to be around, but if you annoy me I will cut you.

Oh, never mind this. Due to the NCP's most recent quotes on homosexuality, we are now in 100% support of the NCP.

THE ELECTIONS ARE OVER!!

Final Results

The NCP has lost power in Parliament! The new leader, the Progressive Party, now holds 43 seats in Parliament. The Conservatives have the next-highest number of seats with 42. The Meat Comes First Party now holds 36 seats, a huge spike from the lone seat they held in 2010. The Zanannian Nazis now have 14 seats, one less than 2010.

In the popular election for Prime Minister, Gustave Defraine won by less than 5,000 votes, making it the closest election ever recorded. Anne-Therese Challoner, the former PM, received a standing ovation when she handed the key to the Chamber building over to PM-Elect Defraine. She will be missed, but not forgotten. Indeed, she will be standing on the sidelines, watching as the Progressives take a shot at running Zanannia.
