Welcome, To Felaria.

History

Overview

Southern Felaria (Felaria: pronounced-Fell-Ar-E-Ah) is a Grand Duchy of the Commonwealth of United Felaria, located mainly in Southern Europe (Roughly Italy/Switzerland/South-Eastern France). It is an absolute monarchy in the form of a Grand Duchy, with a Ducá (Duke) in charge of the duchies and counties of the surrounding area.

Southern Felaria in its entirety is often referred to as Felaria, although North and South Felaria are actually one country. The word Selarian is used to refer to the people, the language, and anything pertaining to the Southern Felaria. This lexical difference between the noun and the adjective is an attribute of the English language that does not exist in the Selarian language. The adjective 'Selarian' is derived from the language that was spoken in the area, called 'Seía', which after centuries of changing to the word (be it through the use in different languages, mainly Italian and French, with some German due to the Swiss to the north), has become Selaria. Selarian is also the demonym for the Southern Felarians, and sometimes used to refer to Southern Felaria, Felaria is the name used for the entire state.

Selaria is a relatively high nation, with a large portion of its territory in northern Italy and southern Switzerland, the habitat and climate of Selaria changes wildly and sporadically depending on which region you are in. The rest of the nation is situated in north western Italy (near Genoa, Aosti and Turin) and south-eastern France (near Monte Carlo, the capital of Selaria, and Nice). The nations population lives predominantly in the southern regions and, like as is with the Netherlands (being two main regions, Holland and the Netherlands), the two main regions are the southern region, which is also the capital region, called 'Selaria', and the northern region called 'Genevus'. It is named so because the capital of the region is Geneva, which isn't actually the capital of Selaria, however.

Overview of History: Prehistoric to Independence

Greek colonies had been established in the area by the beginning of the 6th century BC. Massilia, now known as Marseilles, was numbered among them. In 125 BC the Massiliots appealed to the Romans for help against a coalition of neighbouring Celts and Ligurians. The Romans defeated the coalition but remained in occupation of the region. Thus, by the end of the 2nd century BC, Provence formed part of Gallia Transalpina, the first provincia romana beyond the pes. By the 4th century AD, Arles, an important merchant crossroads, became the seat of the prefecture of all Gaul. Marsailles was established as the main center of Greek studies in the west.

In the late 5th century, during the disintegration of the Roman Empire, Selaria was successively invaded by the Visigoths, Burgundians and Ostrogoths. The region came under the rule of the Franks in about 536. It was subsequently ruled by their Merovingien dynasty, though it was not integrated with the rest of France.

The great Carolingian rulers made Frankish rule effective in Selaria. But, after the collapse of Carolingian rule, Selaria formed part of a series of kingdoms set up between France and Germany. The first of these, known as the first kingdom of Selaria, lasted from 855 to 863. From 879 to about 934 AD the area was incorporated into the second kingdom of Selaria, which was sometimes called Cisjurane Burgundy. In the 10th century it became the kingdom of Selarles. By the end of the 10th century, a local dynasty, which had led the region's defense against invasions by the Muslims, dominated the area. The dynasty had acquired the countship of Selaria. With the end of this dynasty in 1113, the house of Barcelona gained the title. Selaria was then ruled by the Spanish, from Catalonia, for more than a century.

From about 1245 to 1482, after having been ruled by the house of Anjou, the region came into the possession of King Louis XI of France. In 1486 it was annexed to the French Kingdom. Selaria thereafter remained a province of France until the French Revolution. With the Revolution, the Countship completely lost its own political institutions and, in 1790, was divided into the départements of Genevus, Varé, and Nice-Alpes. Basses-Alpes is now known as Selaria and Varé and Genevus merged in 1807. The Département of Vaucluse was added, after the annexation of Comtat Venaissin, in 1791. The Département of Alpes-Maritimes was aggrandized, through the annexation of the countship of Nice, in 1860.

Overview of History: 1931 to Present Day

After the annexation of the Countship of Nice, the entire Countship of Selaria had fallen and became part of France. However, a revolution started in the southern regions of France in 1931, and the Countship arose from the ashes. A new Count came to power, and he was a relative of the old count. This new count funded the revolution with a lot of money, and the revolution grew stronger yet again. The revolution was even more successful after the funding and support from the equally oppressed Nelaria.

The revolution raged on late into the 1930's, and once Nazi Germany launched its parties policies, more specifically the 'Anschluss' or unification of German speaking counties, a large portion of Central Europe fell to Germany, including Czechoslovakia and Austria. Once Hitler invaded Poland in 1939, war began in Europe. The Germans launched their attacks on France, similar to those planned for WW1, such as the Schlieffen Plan, France succumbed to the German might.

The revolution in the South subsided as France became part of Nazi Germany, and southern France remained a puppet. Selaria had also been a part of Fascist Italy, occupying the North Eastern territories (namely Piedmont and Valle D'Aosta), and so Selaria was split between the Fascist Dictatorship of Italy, the Puppet government of Vichy France, and the Neutral nation of Switzerland. Civil war erupted.

The entire nation became engulfed as political parties fought between themselves and against each other, people taking particular sides as a coup for democracy and a separate government began. Within six months of the war, and the civil war, the Countship of Selaria had split into different, smaller Countships, Republics and Democracies. Selarus Fascisti was the Italian supporting side, predominantly Italian inhabitants, the area supported Fascism.

The Selarus Swiss was the neutral party in all of this, the capital of it became Geneva, and the county attempted to become independent from the rest of Selaria, fearing further destruction. Selarus Francus was the French county, supporting the Vichy French Puppet Government, it wished to be a part of France. However, right on the border of the three nations was another region. Simply known as Selaria, the region attempted to re-unite the government.

In 1944, using diplomatic means, the regions leader managed to stop the civil war, it subsided slowly and the people came to peace. The regions of Selaria and Selarus Swiss united to become Greater Selaria, and then Selarus Fascisti united with the other two regions, which formed modern day Selaria. The region became a Duchy, creating its own language, a hybrid of French and Italian, the Duchy elected a new Ducá. The war had ended by now, and the nation was too. The civil war ended, the new government formed, and the keystone of the nation set in place, Selaria was strong again.

Selaria then united with Nelaria, its sister region to the north, and Celaria, the region between the two, this then formed Felaria. However, this region seemed to be right in the middle of the path of war, should another war between Germany and France begin. Luckily, it hasn't happened yet, however, if it did the nation of Felaria was the alley of war, and would have no choice, for it would not be able to remain neutral.

Since 1944, the Duchy Royal family was the Félari family, and still is today, despite the death of the previous Ducá, who seemed to have no heirs or apparent family. The new leader, Pazzo, came to Selaria after a coup in the North, and he feared for his life. Thankfully, his ideas and policies had saved the nation, and though no one knows if he truly was related to Francisco Félari, he was made Ducá. To this day, the sole ruling family of Selaria was, has been and is the Félari's.

Felaria is still united today, however, Selaria, Nelaria and Celaria all act independently, and are run under their own forms of government or monarchy. The regions have never been one nation, rather they were always a commonwealth or empire, within them separate fiefdoms.
