I wouldn't consider this dumb but some would, robots are banned from having rights. The worst crime you can commit against a robot is destruction of property as they are considered such.
I used to be Stella Nera ! Humans need to band together to suppress the robots and keep these metal objects in their place, as sub servants of humanity, in order to boost the human cause and achieve our utopia! I'm not anti robot I'm anti robot rights, big difference.

Tramontanum has a few ridiculous laws holding over from medieval and feudal times. They are rarely enforced.

For example, commoners are forbidden from wearing pointy shoes over a certain length - in the 1300s through 1500s, these were considered the reserve of nobles and royals who were fed up with merchants and well-off artisans cramping their style. But who even wears long pointy shoes anymore? And who cares?

It is also illegal for a serf to travel beyond their master's lands without permission, even though nobody is a serf anymore.

...And other such backwards legal tomfoolery.

Tangatarehua, being such an old nation, still has a vast array of weird laws on the books - the majority of which are not enforced:

  • It is illegal to hang a portrait of the reigning Empress upside down, at an angle or place it on the floor.
  • It is also illegal to burn or deface an official portrait of the Empress (and this law is still enforced!)
  • It is illegal to sit on a table
  • It is illegal to insult any of the Maori Gods, especially Rehua
  • It is illegal to worship or build a shrine to Whiro, the god of the underworld, or to invite him to the human realm
  • It is illegal to speak or eat on public transport
  • It is illegal to publicly express support for Princess Tawhai (who attempted to seize the throne in the year 1178). This is still illegal, even though it's been 900 years since this was a relevant news story.
  • It is illegal to look someone directly in the eye if they are of a superior caste to you
  • It is illegal to carry a knife and fork in public (and yes, this one still get enforced)
  • It is illegal to spit on the ground without direct permission from your local Kaitiaki (regional governor)
  • It is illegal to bear your teeth at a bird if it is on the ground.
  • It is illegal to walk a dog on a public street. (In fact, owning a dog requires a license and they're typically banned in urban areas, as they are considered dangerous.)

Some consider our general lack of laws to be dumb. We just think of it as a way to ensure that our nation isn't overrun with the weak, cowardly, and stupid.

We do have a few laws, but most of what is illegal in other nations is perfectly fine here, at least from a legal standpoint.

Ignis Ferreus wrote:I wouldn't consider this dumb but some would, robots are banned from having rights. The worst crime you can commit against a robot is destruction of property as they are considered such.

We would consider it dumb to have a law that puts you in the #1 spot on every Decepticon's list of places to commit piracy against for cause, and that automatically triggers a government subsidy for doing so.

Our government will be adding a bonus for taking "population" from your nation. Your people deserve to be enslaved and shown exactly what it's like to live under a regime that considers you property.

There are a large number of dumb, strange, or otherwise odd laws that exist on paper in Gandoor, with the most common source for these laws being that all extant laws of the Nzardom of Gandoor officially remained in force for both the post-revolutionary interim government and the modern democratic republic, although laws pertaining specifically to the monarchy could no longer be enforced (even though the laws still remained on the books), as the Gandoorese monarchy no longer exists.

One such example of a law (and one that is commonly used as an example of one because there are multiple elements to the law that no longer exist or are recognized under contemporary Gandoorese law and therefore cannot be enforced, despite officially still being on the books) is:
'It is forbidden for any citizen or Freed Resident of Gandoor to organize, lead, or otherwise participate in a protest within a distance of five hundred feet of the Sovereign of the Nzardom of Gandoor'

This law was passed in 1807 and, as can be inferred from the text, prohibits protesting within a certain distance of the Gandoorese monarch.

Rather obviously, the big thing that would prevent the law from being enforced is that the Gandoorese monarchy does not exist anymore and has no existed since Nzard William II abdicated and dissolved the throne in 1902.

In addition to that, the law specifies 'five hundred feet', but (barring very specific exemptions for aviation and marine navigational purposes), non-metric units ceased being legally recognized following the passage of the Metric Act 1952.

Also, while it would not prevent the law from being enforced, the status of 'Freed Resident of Gandoor' no longer exists under Gandoorese.

The status was created following the abolition of slavery in 1783 and was granted to all newly freed enslaved persons in the country, signifying their right to reside and work in Gandoor, with the status passing to their children and future descendants for as long as it continued to exist.

In legal terms, 'Freed Resident of Gandoor' ceased to exist following the passage of the Citizenship Act 1903, passed by the interim revolutionary government, which declared that all persons who were born in Gandoor (or what is now Gandoorese territory) on or prior to 1 March 1903 automatically had Gandoorese citizenship conferred upon them and said citizenship was retroactively considered to apply from birth.

Cavirfi doesn't have a dumb law at the federal level. At the regional level, in Barnumberg, it is illegal for commercial complexes with a total floor area of more than 300,000 square meters from having a carpark that is open 24/7, carparks of complexes bigger than that size can only be open between 4am and 10pm and between 10pm and 4am, the carpark must be closed entirely so cars parked there are just stuck until the next morning.

The reason for this law is way more stupid, it has nothing to do with some historic safety concern. No, this law literally exists solely because of a personal dispute between the Lord (Governor) of Barnumberg and the owner of Barnumberg (and Cavirfi's) only massive shopping mall. The Lord wanted to build a park where this guy built his supermall (which happens to be the only commercial complex that exceeds the size limit of the law), but the guy who owns the supermall didn't want to budge and have the supermall destroyed. So, the Lord (as he has dictatorial powers over Barnumberg) made this law solely to annoy the owner, it's insane.

It is illegal to bring live piranhas into any commercial or government building except with the permission of the owner.

This law was passed in 2014 after a craze for "piranha-ing" got a bit out of hand. Pranksters would sneak into buildings which had freshwater fishtanks (which were very trendy at the time), and release live piranhas into them to eat all the fish. After an unknown individual "piranha-ed" the fish tank in the then-Prime Minster's office, leading to the untimely death of Bubbles the goldfish, the government took action and passed this law.

Some conspiracy theorists believe that "piranha-ing" was secretly started and popularised by pet stores and aquatic centres, to increase sales of both piranhas and other fish (to replace those eaten by piranhas).

Umbrella Etiquette law

Postby Rasutafia » Mon Apr 29, 2024 2:31 pm

It Is Illegal To Carry An Umbrella If The Weather Broadcast Says Sunny
Signed in mid 2019 this law became a thing when the party decided to cut back on pedestrian traffic via unnecessary objects the party voted to ban the carrying of an Umbrella if the broadcast said it would be sunny. The law still applies even if it begins to rain later in the day .
Citizens caught breaking this law receive a labor camp sentence up to 36 years or possibility of execution
The cities of Tatsuna, Vondadale, Veilson and Lofobia have seen a decrease in umbrella usage since this law was signed
This law is still currently enforced to this day

It is illegal for any woman to enter the Palais d'Allais (the primary residency of the Aikolandais Royal Family) whilst wearing men's clothing.

The law dates to the mid-18th century and, more often than not, violators were merely temporarily expelled from the palace and its grounds until they changed into the proper attire for a woman, although in rare cases, repeat offenders were permanently expelled and forbidden from entering the Palais d'Allais.

While this law remains on the books, it is no longer enforced. The last woman to be expelled from the Palais d'Allais for violating this law was the Countess du Valier, who was expelled from the palace by the Royal Guard for wearing trousers in 1922. She was allowed to return to the palace without changing into 'proper' attire by the order of Emperor Henri VII, who stated 'While I may not fully understand the need for some women to wear the clothing of the male sex, it does not affect myself nor do I feel that it degrades this palace for them to enter while wearing these clothes'.

In Tal'dorei, it's illegal for people to work in heavy industry until they are 21, but children can incorporate businesses, trade stocks, learn to drive, own their own property which their parents cannot take away, and drop out of school with no penalties, all starting at age 13.

It's also still illegal to make memes that even pretend to support the Qiku Dynasty (Another nation on-world from an RP I played Tal'dorei in), which dates back to 2008, due to a war from 2007 to 2015.

Not "dumb" but complicated here is the adultery law.

Basically adultery is legal for non-married couples, but it can be considered either a civil or a penal offence for married couples, while the lover is never punished. Judges generally only enforce adultery law as a penal offence when there are also other aggravating circumstances, such as for example when the couple have childrens which suffered severe trauma from the affair (hard thing to prove in a court) or other crimes such as emblezzement. In practise, almost all cases of adultery ends up with simply a divorce and financial obligation for the cheater, and even when the sentence is a penal offence, the convicted almost always ends up doing community services or paying fines, while the actual jail time (maximum 2 years imprisonment) is suspended.

In our country you're not allowed to vote on specific things if you're from a reservation (since it would incentives people to rush to reservation to vote against the natives wishes). Though the reservations would end up having limited representation if a referendum would pass which transitions one of our institutions to be more representative of the population (instead of favoring the rich) which would mean that natives would have the freedom to vote (even if limited).
A Federal Republic (with a complicated past).

In Crodelinam, if you are caught feeding pigeons in any national park, you are subject to being forced to only eat bird feed for 2 days while tied to a post. The reason is that Crodelinam has a huge problem with pigeons out-competing native species.
