Novenska Energetika

Postby Novenka » Tue Sep 12, 2023 1:58 pm

The refinement and consumption of hydrocarbons dominate Novenkan energy production. Coal and biofuels are the backbone of Novenkan energy, specifically syngas and methane, supplemented by geothermal and hydroelectric powerplants in between. Despite abundant gas reserves and production, lighting and heating systems are electric, otherwise reserved for vehicle fuel, itself subjected to fuel rationing and shortages. According to recent events, biofuels are beginning to supersede coal and oil mining, although it is facing competition from wind and solar power. All electric infrastructure is owned by the State via Novenska Energetika.

The vast majority of Zirkovians get their power from nuclear plants, due to their efficiency aboard colony ships. Some colonies rely on solar, wind, hydroelectric, and geothermal energy, particularly on smaller and often temporary planetary outposts.

Mostly renewables - wind, solar, hydro being the three most popular

We have a few offshore oil platforms though

The last coal mine closed about 20 years ago, and the last plant about 30

There are currently no nuclear plants here

Nuclear power is the primary energy source for the Armed Citizenry of Arkos1. Providing 100% of all power for the nation due to energy density and taking advantage of our massive mining operations, with a full redundant backup of coal, oil, and natural gas plants in case we have to shut down a nuclear reactor for whatever reason, there will be no disruption of cheap, reliable power. Thus wind power and solar power is essentially outlawed, far too intermittent.

Chadtonia has a national power grid that utilizes Nuclear Power.

In addition to this, certain areas of some provinces are powered by wind power, coal power, and/or hydro-electric.

Note: The entire city of The Great Royal City of Chadtonia (Chadtonia's capitol city) is the only area where solar power is used as the primary source of power during daylight hours. This city is also powered by Nuclear Power, and has a fail safe to access backup Nuclear Power generators.

Synthellia, for a while, was fairly reliant upon nuclear power. However, when environmental activists pointed out the necessary nature of disruptive mining operations to get said material necessary for it, we began phasing it out in favor of other green energy sources, such as wind, hydroelectric and geothermal. Nuclear power is still fairly common, and plans to replace the remaining 23% of nuclear power with green energy aren't expected to be invested in for the near future.
Stats are mostly canon.

Nuclear Energy (incl. fusion power, since my nation is technologically set in a near future by Earth standards), wind, water, and still some coal with ccs until fusion power can take over completely.

Postby Holtstein » Wed Sep 13, 2023 5:08 pm

BACKGROUND

Holtstein energy production began with three landowners, better known as Landers: the Ludwigs, the Karls, and the Formans. Originally, the Landers were wealthy families who possessed vast agricultural assets and property, effectively becoming rural and financial monopolies in Holstein. To expand and maintain their growth, the Landers began building dams and windmills, harnessing the rivers and wind for their own purpose.

The idea of energy production began with the Formans, however, who, embroiled in their rivalry with the Ludwigs, lost the race to acquire partnership with the miner guilds, known as Graffers, who were responsible for phosphorous and sulfur extraction - key ingredients in fertilizer production. To compensate their losses, the Formans dedicated their wherewithals into technology, where they subsequently used their engineering expertise to develop and construct hydroelectric turbines. By further modifying electric turbine technology, the Formans were able to outfit their windmills to produce electricity, allowing the Formans to outfit their equipment and utilities with electricity, including electric lights, magnetically locked doors/gates, electrically activated hydroponic systems, and even intercom systems, significantly reducing wastage and manpower.

Meanwhile, the Karls, with collaboration from the Ludwigs, taken a keen interest in biofuel technology, both facing waste disposal and sanitation issues, such as, unclean water, E. coli and dysentery outbreaks, and ineffective sewage infrastructure. To resolve the issues, the Landers founded Karl-Ludwig Gasworks, utilizing largely preexisting refinery processes to transform sewage sludge and excrements into fertilizer and methane. Other developments, such as, dilution and decantation (water treatment), desalination (salt and mineral removal), and electrolysis (hydrogen and oxygen gas production), allowed KLG to rival the Formans, collectively introducing electrification, modern sewage, and biogas to the nation.

The Onigiri Enclave uses mostly wind & solar power throughout most of the nation, with many solar farms across the west and east, as well as panels atop most buildings, and wind turbines all across the nation, atop buildings, on mountains, and off the coast. Hydroelectric power is also a key energy source, generators being prevalent in the Basmati Plains of the southwest, Jasmine Peaks of the north central region below the southern Donburi Peninsula, and Thunder Bay in the northwest. Tidal energy is also a common source of power, with many generators off the coast allowing the ocean's tides to turn turbines. We use absolutely zero natural gas, petroleum, or coal power sources, having divested fully from fossil fuels in the mid 18th century, including the total ban on automobiles that currently stands (in part to also lower the environmental impact of having to pave roads, which can negatively impact many ecosystems... and given our nation's cold climate across most of the nation, would be routinely snowed over, rendering them useless wastes of money and resources anyways). A couple of small rural communities still use nuclear power in the Basmati Plains and Mudbutt Steppes, but we are looking to slowly phase that out. Geothermal power is prevalent on the northern Donburi Peninsula, where several geysers exist west of the city of Moonshine Gravy and north of our largest city Silk Sardonyx. In the last couple of years, a prototype antimatter reactor was built near the Albaloo Observatory on Mt. Fabulosity as a proof of concept facility to power the city of Nanako. The plant is stable and works, but as it stands, is vastly too resource intensive and expensive to make more of them at this time with our current level of technology, and still only supplies about 30% of Nanako's power needs, so most of the city's power still comes from wind and solar power.

For a statistical breakdown of our power usage, this is how The Onigiri Enclave is powered:

POWER
  • Wind - 58.2%
  • Solar - 13%
  • Tidal Power - 10.8%
  • Hydroelectric Power - 9.2%
  • Geothermal Power - 6.9%
  • Nuclear - 1.6%
  • Antimatter - .3%
The Onigiri Enclave is a highly progressive scientific largely secularist nation welcoming to all (as so long as you aren't a bee or a jaywalker).

The Free City's electricity is produced from both renewable and non-renewable sources. 40% is produced by nuclear power stations, 30% is produced by run-of-the-river hydroelectric power stations, 18% is produced by tidal hydroelectric power stations and 12% is produced by geothermal power stations. It also imports crude oil and natural gas for its industrial (plastics, chemicals, vehicle fuel) and domestic (heating, cooking) uses. 60% of its hydrocarbon imports are of crude oil from Brazil, Angola and Nigeria. The remaining 40% are of natural gas from Nigeria and Brazil.

80% Fossil Fuels (50% Coal, 20% Oil, 10% Natural Gas)
20% Renewable Energy’s (10% Nuclear Power, 5% Wind and Hydroelectric, 2.5% Biofuel, 2.5% Geothermal)

In Zaire, both coal and crude oil resources are mainly used domestically. Zaire has the infrastructure for hydro-electricity from the Congo River at the Inga dams, The country also possesses a river system that could provide hydro-electric power to the entire continent according to a UN report on the country's strategic significance and its potential role as an economic power in central Africa.

The generation and distribution of electricity are controlled by “Société nationale d'électricité”, but only 75% of the country has access to electricity. Zaire is a member of three electrical power pools. These are Southern African Power Pool, East African Power Pool, and Central African Power Pool.
Alt Congo that was united following independence with the other Congo, forming Zaire. Zaire is now a african power and a powerhouse of trade globally.

Short answer: Mostly renewables.

Long answer: Nastorordia's main source of power is our nuclear power plants, which generate around 73% of our yearly electricity (we are actively working towards fusion power). The remaining percent is shared between hydroelectric power plants (mainly produced by the Vogengrad dam), wind turbines, and a few solar power plants. Oil and gas have been slowly rolled out and are now considered obsolete, however, they still share a minor part in energy production.

Well in Great Britain and Irelandia we find it best to use a mix of biomass and nuclear plants, as the waste from both can be dealt with easily. Furthermore ever since the creation of the Windscale Piles these reactors have also been fueling our many nuclear powered space projects as well as minor WMD research (don’t hate on us for this). The largest nuclear plant is the Sellafield general atomic energy site. (This is following the LGNPP incident). And the largest bio plant is the North Yorkshire Moors Biofuel plant (also known as the Baskerville Bio-plant).
