They're given the same lawful protections and status as anyone else - bathrooms are unisex and discrimination by sex, gender, and sexual preference is illegal.

Every day NationStates tells me I have one issue. I am pretty sure I've got more than that.
There is no legislation in McFreedomstan™ outside of a voluntary tax code, so what little of a state there is tends to ignore them. Firearms are widely available, so the general populace tends to be cautious in how they treat one another. Discrimination is 100% allowed, and shooting people that discriminant against you is also 100% legal.
So, yeah, we're not going to have a circle-jerk of "ew, transgender is icky" trolling and torture fantasies with a thin veneer of "in character" slapped on top, thanks. My thanks to those in the thread who did not jump on that particular bandwagon.
