In the 1990's the regime collapsed to be replaced by an Islamic Republic, which Mirzastan has retained. How did you find out about Tiandi? (optional):

This app is for the most part fine, but we shouldn't have Islamists as any major political force in Tiandi. That's about it, really!

Also, I don't think you are new to NS, haha. What previous accounts have you been active on? :)

I've played a country called Zykraluski in the Westphalia region for just under a year.

I'll change the "Islamist" insurgency to a Sunni/Shia one against the majoritarian Ibadi government then if that makes more sense, meaning its more sectarian tensions rather than world-wide Islamist terrorist movements. I'll also change the actual "Islamic Republic" part will more just be a title (like in Pakistan and Afghanistan) rather than an Iranian style Islamo-clergy style system with the ruling party being more like a socialist version of the Turkish AKP or Tunisian Ennahdha. I'll be willing to change more if necessary. Would it also be okay if Akitsukuni colonised Mirzastan (with Mirzastan becoming independent after the Eulhe War?)

It's a Catholic nation (generic Christian works if there's no proper Catholicism in Tiandi) with a small Protestant minority but it is very linguistically diverse, with strong regional identities that play a central role in the political developments of the country, in terms of centrifugal vs. centripetal dynamics in the party system. It's a rather conservative country, socially and politically.

Historically, my idea was for it to have broken off from Cosenza some time in the early 20th century, perhaps thanks to some foreign influence, albeit the country remained extremely poor and very unstable, always shifting between brief democratic interregnums and longer authoritarian periods. This did not prevent, however that thanks to the developmentalist policies undertaken since the 1960s, the country has seen massive economic growth thanks to State-oriented export-driven trade policies combined (until recently) with wage depression at home to boost exports. It has largely worked, and now Roden is Gungju's fastest growing (perhaps wealthiest?) state. Its development kind of mirrors that of the so-called Asian Tigers IRL. The country probably became a democracy in the late 1980s, although it appears to have consolidated itself.

This is interesting and I would accept it, but I am really adamant about more nations having to have been colonized in the past. :p

The colonization doesn't have to be too intrusive - I don't mind if it's largely indirect rule like with much of the British Raj.

Right, well I have a couple of ideas on this. One of them is that Roden was helped to become independent by whomever, but instead of having a formal protectorate, we're dealing with an informal one, much like most Latin American countries' relationship with the UK, and particularly Argentina. Or Thailand with the French and English, in the sense that essentially they were more autonomous than the formal protectorates, but in practice they were reliant on colonial powers for approval, and in foreign policy circles (like Argentina and the UK), they were pretty much one and the same, as a result of aiding them in becoming independent from Cosenza. Of course, a more formal protectorate also works, but I was thinking of something relatively short, since I think it fits better with my idea of recent independence. We can discuss this on the IRC, though.

NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: formally Sukuzhin or Mishihase/informally Mishiwase (肅愼) [Mishiwase Yashimese]; Misuvashi (粛眘) [Mishiwase]
Real life culture influence: Japan (Taisho and early Showa period), Japan (Tohoku and Hokkaido), Tungusic peoples, pre-Turkic Western China
Real life culture of former colonizer:

Population: 48,910,000
GDP (PPP) per capita: $19,765
GDP (nominal) per capita: $17,326
Military manpower (active/reserve): 220,000 active, 560,000 reserve

Language(s): Mishiwase (con-dialect of Yashimese [Japanese]), Mishiwase Yashimese (Shi orthography), Kuru (pseudo-Ainu), Hichire dialects (Japonicized(?) Northern-Tungusic), Gsangyur languages (pseudo-[conservative]-Sino-Tibetan), Neo-Tianqian, Hewenira (pseudo-Nanai), Utku (pseudo-Nivkh)

Nation description:
The earliest settlements in Mishiwase were established along the Yagiru and Uruhe rivers in 2nd millenium BCE, with the vast, sparsely-populated steppes of the interior being home to various tribes and clans of nomads and pastoralists. The Bronze Age Usshuri culture, distinctive for its ashen grey pottery and ringed staffs, thrived from the mid-2nd millenium BC until its eventual decline and replacement by the Sappyou culture in the 6th century BC. The Sappyou culture is identified with the Gsangyur peoples, whose traditional attribution of the introductions of the yak and dog can be dated to c. 610 - 550 BC, and whose ancestral language possesses loanwords from Late Old Tianqian but appears to lack many terms for Iron Age technology. It is during this period that the domestication of grey sika deer and the spread of technology from Yashima and continental Jungju occurred.

During the 4th to 11th centuries, a series of large-scale migrations and invasions from Yashima occurred, many of which were from losing nations and clans during the various wars and skirmishes for dominance over the Imperial Court. Much of what is known about pre-migration period Mishiwase comes from a transcription of oral Gsangyur history found in the 10th century work written by the southern Yashimese traveller Amanji, the Returning Chronicle from the Great Sea, which attempted to document the histories and societies of both native and settler Mishiwase polities. It is within this text that the name Sukuzhin/Mishihase was first used, describing a people living in central coastal Mishiwase now commonly identified with the Hichire-speaking Chokten people. Following this period of migration was the Hanarenari period. Despite the competition between trade and discrepancy in military technique, fighting appears to have died down between the various nations, whether due to cautious mistrust or increased tolerance, and an intercourse of language and technology began. Although some Yashimese lords attempted to invade Mishiwase during its perceived stagnation, the rise of Akitsukuni and Jeongmi ultimately ended these attempts.

This period of tranquility would be interrupted by the Conquest for Unification in 1248 by Phemnga, a warlord and shaman born of the Gsangyur Tsengrup clan to a Hewenira mother. While fearsome on the battlefield, Phemnga was also renowned for his benevolence towards his prisoners and his tolerance and encouragement of regional cultures and religions. The Tsengrup dynasty's rule over Mishiwase gradually weakened due to several failed wars, before descending into civil war in 1478-1501, starting what is known as the Low Tide period. Ultimately proving victorious was Takuma Nagimori (託摩和守), leader of the Takuma clan and of mixed Yashimese-Hichire ancestry, who united Mishiwase in 1565 after defeating both Saha/Sawa Morokata (佐波師賢) and Ladsnhal Khonphug. Although he controlled nearly the entirety of today's Mishiwase, he declared himself as Great King (大王) of a new Kangon dynasty (罕琿) which lasts to this day, himself later becoming known as Kangon Taiso (罕琿太祖). While Kangon Taiso tried to establish Neo-Tianqian as the official language of his new kingdom, it is under his and his descendants' rule that the Yashimese culture and language made significant influences, spreading inland and displacing Classical Gsangyur as the lingua franca.

In 1803, Kangon Eihou (永豐) declared himself Tokkwau/Tokkou Emperor (徳光高帝) of Mishiwase, and established the Imperial Secretariat, part of which has evolved into the modern state executive and legislative body, the Grand National Council, with the other half becoming the State Censorate. Today, Mishiwase is well known for, and has been both praised and criticized for, its strict but unenforceable "moral edicts" and the survival of the censorate-bureaucrat system.

I don't have a clear idea (maybe some mix of various counties and republics? idk) for the pre-colonial or the colonial period, as Roden was essentially a dependency/part of Cosenza (particularly colonial Cosenza under Jeongmian control), which broke off from the country shortly after independence (1947-1948) after a conflict in which foreign powers very indirectly directly intervened (less Korea than Katanga). At independence, although being dirt poor, Roden had a series of natural advantages (large diaspora community, good relations with developed world) that permitted rapid economic development since the 1970s, although political changes were slower to come: The country until the 1980s always shifted between longer authoritarian periods and democratic interregnums, the most important being the so-called technocratic regime (1965-1988). Also lovely place for researching and writing down about ideas for a social liberal welfare state model. Some ideas regarding canon may change depending on how Cosenza was thought about, I picture it as a mean jingoistic northern neighbour bitter about losing Roden to imperialists.
