Note: for a piece of software to be copyright protected for 51 years in China, it must be able to be run without an operating system, since otherwise it is not an independent piece of software, but an "add-on". If it is an add-on, it can only be protected for 5 years. This is in imitation of the principle for books: the main body of the book can be protected for 51 years, but the table of contents, indices, and appendices can only be protected for 5 years. The standard computer used to test software is an IBM 704 installed in 1955; applicants must present their work in punched card format and be able to demonstrate that the software produces "meaningful and useful" output in the form of punched cards.
