Name of nation: Republic of China
Is your nation a member of the World Assembly or equivalent? Yes
Is your nation a party to any international agreements governing intellectual property laws? No

Does your nation recognize copyright? Yes
Is registration necessary for copyright protection? Yes, as well as official recognition
What are the requirements for a work to qualify for copyright? Must be an original work or with significant changes to an original work
How long does a copyright last? 51 years for original work; 21 years for translations, annotations, and other subsequent editions

Are national symbols copyrighted? No
Are the wording of laws or court decisions copyrighted? No
Are currency or postage stamp designs copyrighted? No
Are all other government works copyrighted? Government publication by law cannot be copyrighted, even by the original author
Are drafts of any of the above copyrighted? No

Are works by foreign individuals copyrighted? Not unless they register for copyright protection
Are works by foreign corporations copyrighted? Not unless they register for copyright protection
Are works by foreign government agencies copyrighted? Not unless they register for copyright protection
Are works by non-humans copyrighted? Not unless they register for copyright protection

Can authors require attribution for their works? No
Can authors prevent reproduction, distribution, or performance of their works? No. Monetary damages may be recovered by civil process.
Can authors collect payment for the use of their works? Yes.
What recourse do authors have if others infringe their copyrights? Sue for damages.

Is it legal to make digital copies of CD's? Depends on what's on the CD/DVD/BD.
Is it legal to make digital copies of DVD's? Depends on what's on the CD/DVD/BD.
Is copy-protection technology commonly used, and is it legal to defeat it? They are commonly used and it is perfectly legal to defeat them.
Is it legal to record video or audio in a cinema? Legal, but it may be against the rules of the cinema, which one is obliged to abide if one is a patron.
Is it legal to sell pirated movies, music, video games, or software? It is by definition illegal.

Is it legal to download copyrighted digital content without permission? Download, yes.
Is it legal to upload copyrighted digital content without permission? Upload, no.
Are file sharing websites legal? Yes.
Is the circumvention of software restrictions, or "jailbreaking", legal? Yes, and the jailbroken software is regarded as a subsequent edition of the software entitled to copyright of itself.
Is the circumvention of phone service provider locks, or "unlocking", legal? Yes, but phones are not usually locked in China, since we have a telecommunications service monopoly here.
On a scale of 0 to 5, what is the level of tolerance for digital piracy? 5
What attitude does the government have towards digital piracy? It's ungovernable.

Can copyright infringers be subject to criminal prosecution? Yes
What is the maximum penalty for copyright infringement? $2,000 fine.
Are websites required to take down infringing content uploaded by users? This is called the shopping mall policy in China. The shopping mall owner has no control over who comes into the mall, and hence cannot be held responsible for anything that happens within the mall, unless it pertains to a physical feature of the mall itself.
Is making frivolous copyright claims/legal threats, or "copyright trolling", legal? Yes, but court fees are quite hefty in China, so frivolous claims of any kind are discouraged, with amercement pending for a vexatious litigant.

Note: for a piece of software to be copyright protected for 51 years in China, it must be able to be run without an operating system, since otherwise it is not an independent piece of software, but an "add-on". If it is an add-on, it can only be protected for 5 years. This is in imitation of the principle for books: the main body of the book can be protected for 51 years, but the table of contents, indices, and appendices can only be protected for 5 years. The standard computer used to test software is an IBM 704 installed in 1955; applicants must present their work in punched card format and be able to demonstrate that the software produces "meaningful and useful" output in the form of punched cards. This standard has been in place since the early 1950s for software and has not been modified since, much to he chagrin of software distributors, especially Microsoft, which expected this:

But found this in the copyright office:

Name of nation: The Principality of Dread Catsylvania
Is your nation a member of the World Assembly or equivalent? not yet
Is your nation a party to any international agreements governing intellectual property laws? maybe on paper, but we put our own traditions above any treaties we sign

Does your nation recognize copyright? only selectively for foreigners
Is registration necessary for copyright protection? yes
What are the requirements for a work to qualify for copyright? registration
How long does a copyright last? 10 years, but can be renewed up to 3 times

Are national symbols copyrighted? no, but wearing and displaying symbols is restricted by Sumptuary Laws and the Inquisition
Are the wording of laws or court decisions copyrighted? No
Are currency or postage stamp designs copyrighted? No but counterfeiting can get the death penalty
Are all other government works copyrighted? no
Are drafts of any of the above copyrighted? no

Are works by foreign individuals copyrighted? no, they have to register it here separately, and it is perfectly legal for a citizen to copyright or patent foreign intellectual property as if it were their own
Are works by foreign corporations copyrighted? no, same as above applies
Are works by foreign government agencies copyrighted? no, same as above applies
Are works by non-humans copyrighted? no, same as above applies

Can authors require attribution for their works? yes, but much harder for non-citizens
Can authors prevent reproduction, distribution, or performance of their works? yes, but much harder for non-citizens
Can authors collect payment for the use of their works? yes, but much harder for non-citizens
What recourse do authors have if others infringe their copyrights? they can sue in court

Is it legal to make digital copies of CD's? only for nobility, and even that comes with paperwork
Is it legal to make digital copies of DVD's? only for nobility, and even that comes with paperwork
Is copy-protection technology commonly used, and is it legal to defeat it? no, our protection is limiting access to internet and electronics in general. Commoners, when they can afford a computer, may only surf our national intranet. Ghosts and demons can come in through your computer, so we only want people who know what they are doing on the internet.
Is it legal to record video or audio in a cinema? no, the screen might be haunted, and then the evil spirit can spread to your recording device. Best to keep such potential contaminations contained.
Is it legal to sell pirated movies, music, video games, or software? no

Is it legal to download copyrighted digital content without permission? yes but since we limit access to the internet, in practice only the wealthiest and highest ranking Catsylvanians would do such a thing, so they can afford to pay.
Is it legal to upload copyrighted digital content without permission? No but it would be most likely a high ranking influential person or person with an influential family doing it, so if it happens, good luck getting this law enforced.
Are file sharing websites legal? same as above
Is the circumvention of software restrictions, or "jailbreaking", legal? there is no law against jailbreaking foreign products
Is the circumvention of phone service provider locks, or "unlocking", legal? there is no law against unlocking foreign phones
On a scale of 0 to 5, what is the level of tolerance for digital piracy? 5 or 4 (depending on rank) for those who have the ability; if some peasant tried it, it would probably be 1; unless the Inquisition objects because it is used to circumvent censorship or bring Satanist influences into the nation, then it is 0
What attitude does the government have towards digital piracy? it is not dangerous unless it is used to circumvent censorship or aids occult forces

Can copyright infringers be subject to criminal prosecution? yes, especially in theory
What is the maximum penalty for copyright infringement? same as all other crimes, burning at the stake
Are websites required to take down infringing content uploaded by users? sometimes
Is making frivolous copyright claims/legal threats, or "copyright trolling", legal? no, all frivolous use of the legal system will be punished, possibly even by burning at the stake
This land is inhabited by an ancient evil that cause the dead to rise, demons to lurk in shadows, spirits to haunt everything. We have cultists, witches, ghosts, zombies, werewolves, vampires, wraiths... just about any dark force you can think of! Our traditions and way of life is designed to cope with this sinister presence.

Some of our best products are silver bullets, silver crucifixes, oaken stakes, salt, and garlic. We export a lot of sulfur (collected from defeated demons' lairs).

We have lots of cats because cats are good creatures, seeing invisible and fighting evil spirits every day. How else do you explain all the things cats do?

Are websites required to take down infringing content uploaded by users? Yes, otherwise they are considered accessories to piracy or theft.
Is making frivolous copyright claims/legal threats, or "copyright trolling", legal? No. Doing so is considered theft.

Name of nation: New BIrgland
Is your nation a member of the World Assembly or equivalent? Yes
Is your nation a party to any international agreements governing intellectual property laws? Yes

Does your nation recognize copyright? Yes
Is registration necessary for copyright protection? Yes
What are the requirements for a work to qualify for copyright? The work must not be a copy of a previously registered work, and it also cannot be a work in the public domain. The work must also be officially available for sale from New Birgish retailers.
How long does a copyright last? For individual authors, until death. For corporate authors/copyright holders, 100 years; if the work is not used (i.e. a copyrighted video game is no longer sold and there are no new releases in the series) for 2 years, then the work automatically enters the public domain.

Are national symbols copyrighted? Yes; usage revoked on a case-by-case basis
Are the wording of laws or court decisions copyrighted? No
Are currency or postage stamp designs copyrighted? Yes
Are all other government works copyrighted? No
Are drafts of any of the above copyrighted? No

Are works by foreign individuals copyrighted? Yes, if the work is officially released in New Birgland. Then the above laws apply.
Are works by foreign corporations copyrighted? Yes, if the work is officially released in New Birgland. Then the above laws apply.
Are works by foreign government agencies copyrighted? Yes, if the work is officially released in New Birgland. Then the above laws apply.
Are works by non-humans copyrighted? Yes, above laws apply

Can authors require attribution for their works? Yes
Can authors prevent reproduction, distribution, or performance of their works? Yes
Can authors collect payment for the use of their works? Yes
What recourse do authors have if others infringe their copyrights? The legal system is more than happy to protect an author's copyright, to a point.

Is it legal to make digital copies of CD's? Yes. If the CD is not in the public domain, it can only be copied for personal use. If the CD is in the public domain or the work that was recorded is in the public domain, it can be copied with no restrictions.
Is it legal to make digital copies of DVD's? Yes, see above.
Is copy-protection technology commonly used, and is it legal to defeat it? DRM is used, but it must be non-intrusive. Use of always-online DRM and geoblocking DRM is illegal. DRM is required to allow the user to copy the protected work for personal use. It is legal to defeat DRM if it does not allow personal copying, requires a permanent Internet connection, or restricts usage to certain regions, since such DRM is illegal.
Is it legal to record video or audio in a cinema? No
Is it legal to sell pirated movies, music, video games, or software? No. All pirated media must be distributed for no charge. Copyright holders are reimbursed with a tax on recordable media with a capacity greater than 1 GB.

Is it legal to download copyrighted digital content without permission? Yes, if one owns the work legally. However, making sure of this is impossible. It is also legal to download if the work has not been released in New Birgland.
Is it legal to upload copyrighted digital content without permission? Yes, if the work has not been released in New Birgland.
Are file sharing websites legal? Yes
Is the circumvention of software restrictions, or "jailbreaking", legal? Yes; all phones must allow jailbreaking or come with fully unrestricted software.
Is the circumvention of phone service provider locks, or "unlocking", legal? Yes; all phones are required to be unlocked.
On a scale of 0 to 5, what is the level of tolerance for digital piracy? 1 (quite lenient)
What attitude does the government have towards digital piracy? The official government stance on piracy is that it is a symptom of multiple problems. Anti-piracy initiatives are designed to attack the problems that cause piracy, for example geoblocking and excessive DRM. The methods used are somewhat unorthodox; for example, to stop piracy of difficult-to-find foreign works not released in New Birgland, copyright to these works is not given to the owners unless they release the works in New Birgland either by themselves or through a distributor. The government also believes that piracy must not be stopped at the expense of consumers' rights.

Can copyright infringers be subject to criminal prosecution? Yes
What is the maximum penalty for copyright infringement? 10x value of work whose copyright was infringed upon. The average penalty is more like 2x or 3x. Major offenders can be imprisoned. If the infringing works are on physical media, then the media is confiscated and destroyed.
Are websites required to take down infringing content uploaded by users? Yes. However, takedowns need not be automatic, and most automatic takedown systems are too easily abused to even be legal. All relevant websites must have a form that lets users report infringing content, and the forms must be reviewed by humans. Because the review process is slow, not every infringing work on a website must be taken down.
Is making frivolous copyright claims/legal threats, or "copyright trolling", legal? No, and there are severe consequences for doing so. Our legal system is not your plaything. If you genuinely believe your lawsuit is legitimate, we might be more forgiving.
