Christianity has largely petered out. It went from the primary identity of Europe to being largely subordinate to national identities somewhere around the mid 18th century. By the mid-21st century, it barely mattered outside certain impoverished regions and most people stopped identifying with it. The rise of American Evangelicalism was a sort of 'last hurrah' for Christianity as a primary identity, although even there it was fused with nationalism.

By contrast, Islam was able to remain the primary identity in certain regions. While it was subordinate to nationalism in nations outside the Middle East or in Iran, it remained the primary identity in much of the rest of the Middle East. The rise of the New Earth Republic was a death-kneel for Islam as a primary identity, as it went the way Christianity went. Being a Muslim in the NER means checking a box labeled 'Muslim' off in surveys, maybe going to a Mosque once a month and for some ceremonies, and perhaps not eating pork if you are particularly serious about it.
