So for more post-blackpowder age stuff. I want to design my system of combat around the evolution based off of terrain and the isolation of the Daene islands. Here's the gist of it:

Blackpowder introduced by the mongols.

Mongols got trapped during the summer. Later captured and secrets of blackpowder production was spread.

Early adoption came in the form of light cannon-likes and rockets. Early musquets were too costly in terms of metal so most cannon ammunition was either stone balls or large wooden arrows tipped with stone stone, bronze, or iron. Rockets were just wooden or leather tubes filled with blackpowder and small rocks.

Blackpowder technology spread however the lack of decisive tactics, central organization in military, nomadicy, and the dense woods, mountains, etc. led to all battles being small trenches and fox holes in the ground firing at each other from either too far away or in areas were brush was too dense.

Society developed into confederacies rather than separate tribes and clans.
Military organization became that where each tribe would developed as system of 10-20 troopers (known as Gavod) with half operating a small cannon-like or rocketry toopies. Supported by the rest acting as archers or melee defense.
The tactic developed where a Gavod would form a line and light infantry would engage in sharp triangle formations. When as breach was made medium and light Gavod's (they were armed with something similar to a ballista) would engage the breaking point and take the enemy from the center.

Later foreign landings met these swift early blitzkriegs and only sustain in the most favorable considerations even with the technological advantages of musketry. Often with square formations being the best defense from the early on light infantry and hope that nearby artillery and cavalry will eventually defeat the Gavod and the medium and heavy artillery lines.

This is about the basics.

This or this for my main service rifle? It is basically just AK-74 and AK-74M but with a few differences.

Whichever you want. The difference in combat effectiveness between the two is meaningless.

How much of a disadvantage, if any, would my infantry suffer from using AK-74ms against a foe with, say, modern German or Swiss rifles?

No disadvantage whatsoever because small arms make up a miniscue percentage of actual combat kills.

The AK-74M is probably more "modern" than any German or Swiss service arm.

I'm asking under the unrealistic assumption that we're just talking infantry-to-infantry. I know that small-arms don't matter in the long run, but I would like to hear an expert's opinion on the respective firearms. I'm under the assumption that this is the infantry discussion thread, yes?

I wasn't trying to imply that the AK-74m isn't modern; I just was trying to make it clear that I was referring to up more recent German/Swiss firearms as adverse to older shit.
