Last year I spent a few hours at the DARPA robot competition in Homestead, it would take like an agonizing 30 mins for a robot to navigate across even moderate amounts of "rubble" (loose cinderblocks).

There was a Korean team who used light sensors to help navigate, probably didn't account for how bright it would be, and their robot just stood there for 30 mins before they withdrew.

The NASA design took like 15 mins to open a door then fell flat on its face.

Unless you're referring to a misused surrender handle, I can understand the confusion as they do look very similar.

What in particular is negative about that? The movement should not be longer than 5mm, just enough to disengage it from the mechanism.

It's mostly counterintuitive, and the mechanism you use to rotate the selector rod can potentially get jammed with dirt. What I'd do is to have the switch engage a spline on the rod, then let the rod move within the switch. Use a hollow rivet or bolt to mount the switch to the receiver, then run the spline rod through that.

Slightly more complex design, but sealed against dust.

I hope it's clear enough.



Basically, the selector is mounted to the receiver, so it still rotates. The internal rod still moves back and forth, rotates with the switch, but can still slide back and forth within it.

So basically:
1. The selector switch completely surrounds the end of the rod and encapsulates it to prevent seepage.
2. The thread that turns rotation of the switch into horizontal movement of the guide rod is inside the switch and interfaces with the rod as opposed to the rod interfacing with the receiver.
3. On the opposite side I'd just have the same setup but with an opposite thread to ensure the switch behaves the same.

Did I get it right?
