Drop them on the floor. Dispose of them when they get time.

Here is a thought. How about making the turret have no floor so that they can fall right out? You can give everyone foot rests. And it makes for a great escape hatch too.

If you don't mind giving up your NBC protection, landmine protection, climate control and make it possible for a hand grenade to inflict a catastrophic kill on the tank...

Nothing I said was specific to turret baskets.

Some older tanks don't even have turret baskets.

A small price to pay. But if you really don't think that's worth it you can always just not have a turret basket and than have the tank floor slightly slope so that the shells roll out into a compartment under the engine or something.

Really though I prefer the floorless design as it allows you to use Flintstones drive. :p

It'd just be easier to have them roll away from the loader and under the gunner/tc where they can easily be disposed of and won't be a problem

Whilst we are on shells here is a Q. Modern combustible tank shells use non combustible bases. These metal plates are ejected after firing and I assume thrown away. What alternative use could be made of them to ensure they are recycled into something useful without melting them down? Hub caps? Novelty plates?

looking for some good armored cars made today, French, Italian, etc. something out of the EU that is going to be both fast and economical onroad while being versatile and maneuverable offroad.
Something with a decent main gun which is going to be useful at standoff ranges against technical and light armored vehicles. If it had mountings and electronics for a common anti-armor missile that would be nice but not required.

This is going to be for a recon vehicle mainly, I am wanting to add an armored car division to my recon/border patrols.

Centurion crews in Korea would fire ~10 rounds before chucking the shells out of their hatches.

As much as I like its appearance, the BRDM-2 has a lot of significant flaws. In particular, the only hatches are those above the driver and passenger seats, which restricts the turret crew's visibility and makes it perilous to try and leave the vehicle under fire.

This, in turn, led me to introduce DTD-8, which fixes these issues to some degree or another. The "A" variant serves as a light APC, with a crew of 2 (gunner, driver) and five dismounts; the "B" has a smaller crew of three and no dismounts, but is armed with a 22mm autocannon and a 6x6 drivetrain as well as improved optics in the turret. While I designed it as an independent vehicle, using the BRDM-2 for reference only and making several significant changes to sloping and interior layout, it's unfortunately still similar enough in profile that it retains the :not:IRLstuff look... not one of my more original designs, I guess. But I do prefer its appearance, in those small differences, to the BRDM-2.

Image

Sadly I don't do out-of-region exports so this isn't much help. BUT Poland did do something similar with its BRDM-2M-96 family, so you can always look into that if you're not averse to using RL equipment.

22mm autocannon is interesting, did you mean 23mm?
I assume that in the A model, to have that side hatch you've removed the belly wheels?

Neat. IRL BRDM-2 mods have added additional hatches by removing belly wheels too, haven't they?

Imperializt Russia wrote:22mm autocannon is interesting, did you mean 23mm?

No, it's 22mm. Since the USSR technically never existed in my canon (moving toward a closed region and all) 22mm was, for whatever reason, settled on as the "lighter than 30mm" autocannon caliber. Which means, likewise, that this is a "happens to look like a BRDM-2 because I like it that way" vehicle rather than an "ICly we modified the BRDM-2 like this" vehicle.
I assume that in the A model, to have that side hatch you've removed the belly wheels?

Yes, and that's where I got the idea - specifically, one of the Polish modifications, though I forget which and it may have actually been Russian.

Well, to be more technical about it DTD-8 was never designed with belly wheels, only in these 4x4 and 6x6 configurations. So the 8A is probably worse at trench-crossing and traversing rocky/muddy terrain, but in any event it's more of an armored transport car than a dedicated reconnaissance vehicle like the 8B.

Kind of like this except much bigger.
That way you don't have to break NBC just to keep giant hunks of brass from rolling around on the floor.

Isn't that what the giant chunk of steel is behind the breech in most diagrams of guns (Western guns, at least)? The 140mm Rheinmetall gun schematic appears to have something very reminiscent of a brass-catcher.

T-72's automatic ejection, I would assume, does not breach NBC (else I assume they would have fixed it or not used it) and T-80 gun unloads case stubs and places them in spent cassettes, though supposedly at the expense of unloading the shell whose cassette is now occupied by a case stub.
