Common in informal conversation, but impolite in other affairs and is prohibited before the watershed on television.

Swearing is generally viewed to be bad manners in certain situations, but for the most part people view passively as it is common in Hudsinian media. It's also considered by many Hudsinians to be a good and safe way to let out frustration.

Profanity is discouraged and is considered rude. It is not allowed on radio and television before 11 pm, when it is usually censored with a bleep.

If you swear at a police officer, you will get arrested. Otherwise how bad it is depends on the context and on the level of the profanity.

Not illegal, never will be. Swearing is regarded as normal words are, and its not uncommon to see kindergarteners dropping the fuck bomb now and again.

Freedom of speech is absolute in Valkalan, meaning that there is no legal penalty for swearing in public. Socially, excessive swearing in less than stressful situations is considered be rather undesirable by most Valks, but most will ignore such outbursts.

Swearing in your nation

Postby Parhe » Mon Nov 24, 2014 2:23 am

Swearing is accepted in that it is legal and people aren't going to get rough with someone that swears, but it is extremely rare and is nearly unheard of besides from tourists, immigrants, and in a few sub-genres of film.

Swearing isn't even frowned upon in Skinia. Those who ban swearing are not only totally backwards but also fucking stupid. What do they think they're benefiting from prohibiting swearing and how are they gonna control all that shit people fling at each other?

Swearing is not used casually in Tinell, to put it lightly.

You won't hear people go "fuck", "shit", or "damn" over every day life. In Tinell, swearing is usually reserved for when someone is trying to kill you, or, alternatively, when you're about to kill someone.

Most Ostidians could be classified as sailor mouths. In casual conversation among acquaintances, friends and often family, using profanities and swearing is very common, specially among teenagers, adult men and elders of both genders. Popular profanities include the ones most commonly used and understood in international English, along with a couple of local variants and unique words. It must be noted that there's a good deal of distinction between profanities and swears; for example, some such as *rse/*ss(hole), sh*t(e), t*ts, p*ss, damn and hell are "low tier" (they can be used on most media during the watershed, at risk of a higher rating). "High tier" swears and profanities (f*ck, motherf*cker, c*nt, G*ddamn...) are censored in most media, although they're often allowed after the watershed.
However, in polite conversations, using swears and profanities is considered extremely rude, as is using profanities and swears as insults, as in anywhere else. And of course, they're also very impolite in several other situations (casual conversations with strangers [using profanities when talking with someone is commonly a signal of closeness and trust], or in places such as schools [during classes] or churches/temples).
The demonym of my country is Ostidian.

Swearing is considered to be informally friendly. Use of strictly formal politeness generally indicates the speaker is about to express a serious grievance and/or challenge you to a duel.

Profanity, pejorative terms, and "colorful" language all exist in Chadtonia. Chadtonia has no official law regarding these linguistic devices... although the former Parliamentary government considered certain and specific-to-context words and phrases to be tyrannical when spoken about or directed toward the President or the nation as a whole.

On a more serious note, offworlders really are put off by the amount of swearing in our vocabulary. Since countless generations of Pyrrhekski have lived with a much lower quality of life than the rest of Occupied Space, they were given a damn good reason to swear after every other fucking word. As communication with other nations has increased and more areas are entering our sphere of influence, the effect is starting to even itself out.

Postby Imperium Sidhicum » Tue Nov 25, 2014 2:13 pm

The worst Sidh profanities revolve around questioning one's Sidhness, i.e., loyalty to the state and the Sidh cause, one's genetic legacy or status, or accusing one of very dishonourable and un-Sidh acts. Some of these terms even hold the legal status of "death words", meaning someone so insulted is legally allowed (or in some cases even obliged) to kill the offender. The normal protocol is to challenge the offending Sidh to single combat to the death, with all the following protocol that is legally enshrined in Imperial law. However a Sidh who has killed another in heat of anger over such insult is more than likely to be cleared of all charges if he can conclusively prove that a "death word" was uttered at him by the victim.

Amfiat - lit. "unperson". Denotes a traitor, someone who blatantly defies and opposes the Sidh ways. A non-Sidh cannot by definition be amfiat, since non-Sidhae are not subject to Sidh laws and ways nor expected to follow them. Accusing someone of being an amfiat is the worst possible insult that can be directed at a Sidh, and is legal grounds for lethal retaliation through challenge to single combat. In fact, a Sidh is expected to retaliate with deadly violence to such an accusation, refusal to do so proving that the accuser is right.

Cunt-born - someone born naturally, i.e., a human. Sidhae take great pride in being the products of science and engineering, and look down upon humans and other species who are born naturally, being results of purely-accidental random genetic combination. Calling Sidh a "cunt-born" is a very grievous insult, since it questions his very Sidhness, and is legal grounds for violent retaliation, though without the social expectation to retaliate violently, as is the case with amfiat. When directed at non-Sidhae, the term loses much of the sting it commands in Sidh circles, being a generic racial slur for humans and other naturally-born aliens. A variant of the term is "egg-born", used for the Skargh who are egg-laying species, and theoretically for any other egg-laying races out there in the Galaxy (none other than the Skargh are currently known).

Halfling; halfie - a Sidh/human hybrid. Considered even worse than cunt-born, since it doesn't just imply natural birth but also genetic impurity and one's Sidh gene-parent having a relationship with a creature of a lesser race. Sidh-human halflings, born of Sidh fathers and human mothers, also known as abominations (a more proper literary term that can nonetheless be used as a curse and insult), are hated and despised by Sidhae as a stain on the genetic perfection of their race. Any known abominations are aborted during pregnancy or terminated mercilessly as infants. The few that survive into adulthood face severe discrimination both from Sidhae and humans, who likewise despise them for their Sidh legacy. Being called halfie or any of the equivalents is legal grounds for lethal retaliation.

Waerloga - lit. "oath-breaker", someone who has committed the unforgivable crime of breaking his word to another Sidh. Someone known to be a waerloga will be shunned and ostracized by all, at least until he restores his honour by blood (such as by being wounded in battle). Breaking word given to a non-Sidh does not make one a waerloga, since Sidhae are not obliged to honour promises given to aliens. Still, mutual reciprocity is generally observed in dealings with aliens, it being considered poor form and counter-productive to Sidh interests to break word given to aliens if they have honoured their part of the deal. Being accused of being a waerloga is a grievous insult, but not a "death word".

Pederas - lit. "faggot", "homo". Accusing one of homosexuality implies genetic corruption, imperfection, also implies indulgence in debauchery, something associated with humans, so while homosexuality itself isn't particularly frowned upon in Sidh society, the implications of being possessed with such a flaw are quite serious. Not a particularly severe insult, used as a generic swear word.

Scalie; lizard; snake - a generic racial slur for the Skargh and any other theoretical saurian/reptilian species out in the Galaxy. Being called one is an insult because it implies cannibalism, which the Skargh are known to practice occasionally.

Furry; yiffy - originally a mild racial slur for Vulpines, a race of fox-like humanoids from planet Hyracor, used as a generic term for the species (much like "Hajji", "Kraut" or "Ivan" were used on Old Terra). Has since come to mean any fur-coated mammalian sapient. When directed at a Sidh, it is the equivalent to being compared to an ape.

Hackie - slang for prison rape victim, i.e., a bitch, punk.

Irreverent use of the Emperor's or Empress's name, such as swearing on them in all but the most solemn circumstances is also considered vulgar and offensive. "By Emperor's blood" is the most common such expression, used to emphasize the importance of the sentence being spoken, and depending on context, can imply either a solemn oath, a threat or an insult.

Sidhae also are familiar with and use more casual profanities pertaining to sexual and excretory functions or the lack of mental faculties.
Freedom doesn't mean being able to do as one please, but rather not to do as one doesn't please.

A fool sees religion as the truth. A smart man sees religion as a lie. A ruler sees religion as a useful tool.

The more God in one's mouth, the less in one's heart.

Swear words are generally considered impolite in Waspeaters, but the extent to which they are varies by region. People in the north tend not to swear very often and people would be shocked to hear swearing in everyday conversation. But in New Mercia in central Waspeaters swearing is fairly commonplace with adults - not the genuinely bad swearwords, obviously: just the little ones.

Swearing is allowed, but there are cultural stigmas against certain words as being crude or uncalled for. Despite that, the government has no stance on the issue. In general they're more common in the coastal cities, due to their more cosmopolitan nature, and less common in the more rural part of the nations do to them being considered "rude words."
