An investigation and eventually trial will take place. If the accused is guilty then they will either face life in prison or face the firing squad. If he/she is not guilty the accuser will be the one punished instead.

That all depends on the severity of the crime. Within Edom, there are two 'types' of crimes; felonies and misdemeanours.

a) Felonies are seen as crimes of high seriousness, which could entail; Murder, Aggravated assault and/or battery, Manslaughter (unintentional Murder), Animal cruelty, Vehicular homicide, Arson, Burglary, Tax evasion, Various forms of fraud, the manufacture/sale/distribution or possession with intent to distribute of certain types and/or quantities of illegal drugs, grand larceny or grand theft, Vandalism on national property, Minor Treason, Kidnapping, Obstruction of justice, Perjury, Cheque fraud, Copyright infringements, Child pornography, Mail and wire fraud, Violating parole/probation or recognizance bond, Threatening an official (police officer, judge).
Felonies are crimes that are punishable by imprisonment in excess of 5 years.

b) Misdemeanours are seen as a lesser criminal act. Depending on the jurisdiction, examples of misdemeanours may include: petty theft, prostitution, public intoxication, simple assault, disorderly conduct, trespass, vandalism, reckless driving, possession of marijuana and in some jurisdictions first-time possession of certain other drugs, and other similar crimes. Misdemeanours are crimes that are punishable by imprisonment by 5 years or less.

c) High Treason. You may noticed under the felonies, there is Minor Treason. This is treason against the State., whereas High Treason is Treason against the Sovereign or Sovereign and State jointly. High Treason can be punishable by death.

Unrepentant treason on it's own leads to the traitor no longer being considered a member, which means they cannot eat with members or vote in the assembly.

The actual spreading of heretical thoughts, which would include treasonous thoughts, leads to the traitor being banned from merely being in a house when assembly is in session.

The actual acts that can be prosecuted as treason are pretty sparse nowadays; most of the more common ones (eg. attempted murder of government officials, dissemination of classified information) are just regular crimes. One thing that is still treason is conspiracy to overthrow the government.

The matter is largely left to member planets. If an incident regarding Imperial interests occurs, then depending on the nature of the crime, the traitor in question will be tried either by a military tribunal or by an Imperial court. If they are found guilty of conducting treasonous action against the Empire, they are sentenced to either a life-time sentence of hard labor or executed on the spot by an Imperial Knight.
