I'd be fine with adding it, but I can't quite make an entire section with one post. If people can give me five or six entries to add to an FAQ section, I'll make one.

Granted, these are prototypes, but why would anyone (Russia) want these designs? They seem way too impractical... Cool, but impractical.

The Nazis were stupid. They thought coming up with endless designs of bigger and better tanks was somehow gonna help them win.

While they did help, what they really needed was more men, a better air force, and better production capabilities.

Or a nuke.

Which they did come dangerously close to getting.

Just use the namor. There is litteraly no excuse for you to sacrifice the ammunition to carry a few troops, with minimal equipment when you can field a heavy IFV without lossing the benifit of protection.

Sound advice, I suppose; would it be better to have a forward or rear engine, though?

Because it doesn't exist.
It's a prototype for a significantly larger system, adding a second gun barrel for developmental purposes. The addition of a third or further gun barrels is the internet being the collective idiot it is thinking Photoshop is for novelty purposes only.

Not quite. Hitler was stupid and demanded his ideas come to fruition.
Hence why Maus ever existed, why it was to be upgunned. Why the Ratte was proposed and why the Me.262 was held back as a fighter by conversion to fighter-bomber role.

To be fair about the 262 the idea was not that daft. Germany needed a fighter bomber more badly than it needed a strait fighter at that time. Even with mass production a new fighter would not really have done that much to stem the tide of bombers in the west. And experience in the east had shown that the entire German ground support doctrine was in dire problems should they lose air superiority, which they did. And with every other mid-late war fighter being a dual purpose craft there is really no reason why NOT to do the same with the 262.

Plus it's really a myth that the 262 was held back because of Hitler being crazy. It had more to do with prosaic reasons like German industry not being able to suddenly start building jet engines and various other components out of thin air whilst being stretched to fight a war against the entire planet at the same time. I mean sure, the thing could maybe have started being mass produced some time in 43. But what would have been the opportunity cost in other aircraft, tanks etc?

Adapting the Me.262 to just carrying two small bombs meant it lost much of its speed advantages, and had to reduce its gunload. Germany was desperate for advanced fighter aircraft that could, on paper, outfight anything the allies had. Removing two of its guns, much of its ammunition and limiting its speed to carry just two bombs was, primarily, Hitler's doing and held back the aircraft.

And on the other hand, having a handful of fighters that can outfight just about anything and relying on aging dive bombers to exploit that was not exactly optimal either.

If you can make air superiority with your new jet fighters, your ageing dive bombers will be able to achieve their tasks a lot easier and take fewer losses.

Thing is they couldn't. Not really. And definitively not with the kind of production numbers they could have realistically gotten out of those things. Early jet engines were after all unreliable as hell and did not exactly have a long service life. And they needed advanced metallurgy and other stuff that they had a limited supply off. It wasn't exactly a case of turning a BF-109 factory into a 262 factory over the course of a week.

Plus, piston fighters could and did outfight the 262. It was just harder to do so.

The point IR was making was that they could have been better and been much harder to outfight had they not been made into fighter-bombers. With their speed, they were ideal interceptors for the time.

Hitler was notorious for crazily stupid ideas. He was the exact leader you don't want. He micromanaged. He was more educated in art than he was in engineering, yet he tried to be an engineer.

Speed is not everything. Especially since what Germany needed at the time was not more interceptors to fight off the bombers in the west but more fighters to fight the Soviets in the east. Remember, the design process lasted since 41 and the bomber offensive only really got going in 43 by which time it was kind of too late to go back and redo the decisions with the benefit of retrospect.

And besides, with all its speed the 262 wasn't exactly the worlds best dogfighter. And even without any meddling by the time they could have brought up enough of them for anti bomber duties, which realistically still isn't before 1943 allied bombers would have had escort fighters.

Speed is, however, remarkably important.
Would it have been enough to turn the tide of war? Probably not. But it could have gotten quite a bit more renown.
However, this seems more suited for the Aircraft thread, not the ground vehicle one.

Most 262's they built were the A-1 version which was used as both a striker and an interceptor.

The 262 was one of the best fighters of the war and it's kill/loss ratio is heavily skewed by the fact they were consistently outnumbered by allied aircraft and many were destroyed on the runway. It's hard to think of a more accomplished WW2 fighter than the -262, the equivalent allied jet didn't come within a bull's roar of it.
