You'd be hard pressed to get six guys in the hatch to disembark. The rear bay doors are used to expedite the reloading of ammunition stocks. Stowage is in the hull, in that rear bay. In order to take on "troops", ammunition must be unloaded. This leaves a Merkava vehicle with ten rounds loaded in the turret carousel, one in the gun and possibly a few more rounds strewn about the turret. Whilst leaving nearer thirty shells in the FOB.

The idea is primarily for the recovery of a tank crew. Assuming that a Merkava platoon is four vehicles, you can one tank that unloads its hull stowage to take on the crew of the destroyed vehicle to extract them. The remaining two vehicles stand on overwatch.
You now have two vehicles that cannot fight, and the entire platoon would probably have to withdraw. But, you can build a tank in two to six months. You can have four new tank crew in about twenty, twenty four years.

From pictures repeatedly posted in this thread and the prior edition (and probably the one before that), you could probably fit at maximum four people in the foetal position in that rear bay, and carry no ammunition. More people, and you're throwing them in the turret basket, where you've already got a gunner, loader and commander at work. It's certainly not at all suitable for the transportation of infantry, hence the existence of the Namer.

Meaning, the way this is looking, I'd at most fit 2-4 guys back there, for urban combat against insurgents only - when you'd pretty much not be firing the cannon more than a couple times and when it's generally a good idea to transport guys in something that can take IEDs like a champ.

Just use the namor. There is litteraly no excuse for you to sacrifice the ammunition to carry a few troops, with minimal equipment when you can field a heavy IFV without lossing the benifit of protection.

In context of an light tank, with the role of supporting light role/unarmoured infantry in leiu of a MBT, can I swap a main gun for some sort of direct fire missile launcher? Maybe even a M81 style gun/launcher? Is this practical on a modern battlefield?

I'd lean towards as small-a-gun as possible tbh, the aim being it should be air-mobile, amphibious and able to cross bridges that wouldn't support a 70 ton MBT. A 76mm or some bastard home-brew gun of similar caliber might work I suppose.

Well, my logic is that lighter vehicle = smaller vehicle, and so less ammo storage if it has a huge caliber gun.

You'll want something like an AMX-10RC, Rooikat, or other vehicles armed with 76/105mm guns.

Anyone you can put in will be jammed in the foetal position. There's barely enough room for your spine, let alone the head and helmet atop it. It's not a combat-ready position. Hence why it's only used for extraction in emergency and its primary use is expediting reloading the vehicle stocks.

It's literally a 90mm gun firing APCBC rounds, as though somebody looked at the Strv 2000 proposals and said 'no, this is good, but what it needs is less gun'
