The number of Muslims in Daejo Seonguk is estimated at about 40,000. The majority of which are those who converted in the 1950's and their descendants after the 외국 종교의 금지 (Oeguk Jonggyoui Geumji), the Prohibition of Foreign Religions ban was repealed. The Prohibition made any religion outside of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Sinism (native Shamanism) illegal in Daejo Seonguk. In addition to native Korean Muslims, there are some 100,000 foreign workers from Muslim countries. However, as they are classified as Oegugin Geunloja, foreign workers, they are not counted in national statistics.
