Your nation's largest cities

Postby Thakoria » Sun Oct 06, 2013 3:23 am

There might have been a topic like that here but I couldn't find it thus I'm just creating a new one.

So, tell us about your nation's largest cities (as many as you want, might be just one or two or a whole hundred). I suggest writing the city's name, population, location inside the country and a short description (whatever you want: nature, history, architecture, economics or all that together).

I'll start.

1. Màlsi is the capital city of Thakoria with a population of approximately 250.000. It is located in the central part of the country, not on the sea shore. This terittory has been inhabited for centuries but it started developing as a city in 1537 when the King of Bellavishta and Óshtova Hhàmdi I Sùdhar founded a fortress named Kaorreci that later became the main residence of Thakorian Kings, Emperors and then Presidents. Now it's a typical Balkan city with narrow streets, small restaraunts and lots of beautiful churches and museums in the Old Town and poor people, drug addicts and criminals living in typical "commie" appartment blocks in the district of Novavijja ("New town") and other areas of Greater Màlsi.
2. Dhentór is the second largest city whose population approaches 100.000. It's located in the northernmost part of the Republic not far from the Kosova border. It has the biggest number of mosques in country and a huge part of population is Albanian and Bosnian. It also has the biggest cigarette-manufacturing industry in Thakoria.
3. Kurdenna is the next one having around 60.000 of people and located in the South-West in 40 kilometers from the Adriatic coast. It has a very beautiful Old Town built by Venetians and the oldest university in the country. Its people are stereotypically known to be the most polite and intelligent. They speak a dialect named Ajte Kojjale that sounds funny to most of other Thakorians and is considered a bit old-fashioned, aristocratic and snob.
4. Ragjo with its 52.000 population is the biggest sea port of the country and one of the primary tourist destinations with its beautiful Byzantine churches and one of the oldest fortresses of the Republic. It's also known as the hometown of a famous Thakorian XVIII century poet Alexander Macal.
5. Óshtova having around 30.000 people living in it is the town with the most non-Thakorian by ethnicity population. Around 85% are Muslim and speak Oshtovski language that is a Slavic langauge poorly related to Thakorian that is a Romance language. It's the center of a separatist movement which wants the province of Óshtova and some parts of Dhentór province become either an independent country or at least a part of Kosova.
6. Bellavishta having a bit less than 20.000 is the oldest town in the country and the place where first Thakorian King - Alexander I Ùnidor started to rule and created the Thakorian state in 1456. It's also the hometown of the national hero Luigji Vertàndo who later became Saint after defeating Ottoman Turks who failed at conquering Thakoria.

My nations largest cities:

capital: Grand Actium ( although the most important city only a population of 7,575,000, only the very rich and government officials or dignitaries of all sorts, occupy the grand suburbs and mansions of the Grand city, this area is known as upper Actium, wereas lower Actium ( separated by a large 3 mile green belt) has a population of 17,700,000 this part of the city is not as wealthy, but on the whole has larger grander homes than in other parts of the contry, but in total the populations of upper and lower Actium are together the capital city in the nation,( grand total population:over 24 million.

But Zandovernick is our largest city at 37,000,000 this is the economic powerhouse of the nation, that contains the key industry and trading centres, we're as grand Actium is a grand show hub for foreign investors, and only contains main offices for industry based in Zandovernick, as well elaborate airports and restaurants, but on the whole in population terms Zandovernick is the largest city.

  • Handelshaven National Capital-Region
Total number of inhabitants: around 8.5 million. This is the national capital region situated along the Handels Bay and along the banks of the Blauwrivier River and the Heldersrivier River. Handelshaven, with a total of 4 million inhabitants is surrounded by towns such as Delft, Amersfoirt, Grootpunt, Grootpuntsesy, Den Haag, Nuw-Amsterdam, Bayside, Paarl, Slagbaai, Onafhankelikheid, Weltevree, Buitenzorg and numerous other towns and villages. Together they form the sprawling National Capital Region, the political, cultural and economic heart of the country. The area has been inhabited since at least the the year 1000 (the remains of the old native town that existed throughout the 13th century can be found at the National Ethnographic Museum) but European occupation only started after 1652 when the first Dutch farmsteads and plantations were built at Grootpuntsesy and the first part of Handelshaven was constructed around what is now the Handelskade area in the Old Town. The Dutch turned Handelshaven, their new main port of their massive colony in the Pacific into city of beautiful colorful canal houses alongside canals. The Old Town is now considered to be one of the more romantic parts of the city - particularly the area around Handels Quay and former Fort Amsterdam (from 1917 until 2011 the seat of parliament).

From the year 1800 on the British occupiers began to invest massively in the New Town area - giving the entire area a rather British feel, safe some of the older elegant wooden mansions that had been built there by the Dutch prior to the British occupation. One of those mansions, at the top of Southend Street or Suidend now serves as Southend House, the Royal Palace. In 1851 the first railway line was constructed: from Handelshaven to Aberdeen and 30 years later Handelshaven became the spider in the national network of railways, roads and canals that linked the colony together.

British immigration (combined later on with re-newed Dutch immigration proved to be the key factor that made the city grow: by 1850 it was estimated that Handelshaven had 600.000 inhabitants, by 1910 it crossed the 1 million mark. Despite of the War of Independence (1902-1904) , World War I and the National Revolution its growth seemed to be unstoppable. Even more so during the late 1930s and during the years of World War II when people began moving from the countryside into the city in order to keep the war industry running.

By the 1950s new modernist boroughs began to be built around the city but it would not be until the year 2011 that Handelshaven and the surrounding areas, whose uncoordinated growth had led to considerable administrative chaos. For the sake of clarity let's look at the older parts of the city one borough at a time:

    The Old Town (Ou stad).

The old town is situated directly at the waterfront and is bordered by Westminster & Victoria, the Old City Ring and fortifications and Grootpuntsesy. A romantic area with it's numerous canals, canal houses, small courtyards and intimate squares and gardens.. this is by far the most popular part of Handelshaven. Particular gems include Old Governor House, Fort Amsterdam, Broad Street (Breede Straat), Wall Street (Walstraat), the pontoon bridge near Handels Quay and Handels Quay itself. Also Groote Gracht and Kleine Gracht are not to be forgotten.

    Image

Southend (Suidend) and New Town (Nuw stad).

The Southend and the New Town are nominally considered a part of the same area and they are bordered by the Royal Palace and the Palace Gardens to the South, the old Dutch fortifications and moat of the Old City Ring to the North, Westminster & Victoria to the Northeast, King's Park and the Sculpture Garden to the Southeast, Grootpuntsesy to the West.

    Image
    (Southend House)

The heart and soul of the Southend Area is formed by the Royal Palace and the pedestrian street of Southend.

More to the bottom of Southend Street impressive neoclassical buildings such as the National Ethnographic Museum, the National Theater and the old Parliament House (commissioned by the British to serve the colonial administration in 1905) - today a part of the National Museum - with a large extension running around the back of the building. Southend Street ends in Willburrsplaas, Willburr Square (former Queen Victoria Square), where one of the most influential poets of the country is commemorated in a statue overlooking the square. Some of the old original Georgian architecture had been demolished by the late 1960s to build the Kultuurhuis, Culture House , a large cultural center and shopping center, and the square itself, an important thoroughfare connecting the New Town to Westminster (seat of government) and the outer boroughs has received a sunken pedestrian area (so pedestrians remain unhindered by the traffic) and has also become a major transportation hub with several underground subway lines, bus services and a underground railway line converging at Culture House station.

The New Town itself has seen some damage - mainly done by urban planners during the 1950s and 1960s so the area around Willburrsplaas has become one of the commercial hearts of the city with several skyscrapers standing cheek-by-jaw with elegant white-washed Georgian, Victorian , Neoclassical and Edwardian public buildings and mansions that are mainly built out of wood. This is also the area where a lot of modern parking garages (both above and below ground) and underground motorways can be found. This is also where some of the city's most important shopping streets, shopping centers and department stores can be found as well as the majority of inner city parks. Only the area around the Royal Palace has more parks than this particular part of the New Town.

    Westminster.

Seat of government. The beautiful elegant domed building of Parliament House rises over it. Architecturally speaking it's a continuation of the New Town with some more intimate squares (known as "greens" - reminiscent of many garden squares in London) which seem to be a continuation of the Old Town. This is where most of the departments and important civic buildings are housed.

    Grootpuntsesy.

Together with the Old Town the oldest part of the city. Today there are some old whitewashed wooden homes that used to be farmsteads but today serve a domestic use. Most of the area is, like the farmsteads of old, built up out of wood and painted white.. mainly in a tropical Georgian style - sometimes mixed in with the modernist architecture of the 1950s and 1960s. It's a very green area that offers a great number of caves for exploration, parks and the monument that commemorates the Dutch landing of 1652 as well as stunning beach and cliffs that offer a great view over the bay and the port.

  • Coral Bay Urban Area
(form. Halifax, Adelaide, Boston and Seattle, 6 million people)
Capital of the State of New England. A conglomerate of former towns grouped around the city of Halifax (form. Aberdeen) which was founded in 1751 as a penal colony but what is now the main city of the Urban Area with a total number of 4 million inhabitants. Halifax is an interesting mixture of old and new with a good quality of life and various beaches around Coral Bay. The most splendid views across the bay can be seen from Sutton's Ridge, coincidentally also the place where the King himself used to study and the site of one of the last battles during the War of Independence. Today the Urban Area is home to numerous industries and an important naval base.

  • Blauwbaai Bay Urban Area
(form. Kaapstad, Grootberg, Palmvallei and surrounding towns and cities, 4.2 million)
Capital of the Southern Cape State. A beautiful urban area bordered by the mountains and the clear blue waters of the Blue Bay. A city of parks, a naval base, port facilities, manufacturing plants and numerous hotels and beaches. A very green city, it's a popular tourist destination also because, for as far as the Railways are concerned, it's the end of the line. From there on there are only the waters of the Pacific.

Республіка Рюрідова - Королівство Вілкія
"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger and you invited me in; I needed clothes and you clothed me; I was sick and you looked after me; I was in prison and you came to visit me... Truly, whatever you did for one of the least of my brothers and sisters, you did for me."
- the Gospel of Matthew, 25:35-40
