Your Nation's Schooling System

Postby Slafstopia » Mon Jun 24, 2013 4:32 am

What kind of schools are there in your nation? Do you just have a primary school, a secondary school and then university? Or do you have elementary school, middle school, high school, then college or university? Do you have some other school system? Which age groups are in which school? Do certain schools have different hours?

Slafstopian children go to:

Primary School
Ages 5-10
8:30 - 15:30
Teaches basic skills.
Seeks children with academic talents.

Secondary School
Ages 10-15
8:10 - 15:40
Teaches more advanced skills, e.g. algebra.
Teaches children who don't go to the Specialist School.

Specialist School
Ages 10-16
8:00 - 16:10
If you are found to be a specialist at certain subjects, you go to Specialist School instead. Here you learn more advanced versions of the skills Secondary would teach, as well as extra, advanced skills in subjects you excel at.

University
Ages 16-18
7:50 - 17:20
Almost exactly like western universities.
Economic Left/Right: -7.88
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -7.50
Foreign Policy Non-Interventionist/Neo-Conservative: -9.48
Cultural Liberal/Conservative: -8.09

Economic Quiz: Ghandian 100%

Primary School
Ages: 6-11
Time: 08:00-14:00
Teaches basic social skills. Minor lessons, as the focus is on political and social education.

Secondary School
Ages: 11-16
Time: 09:00-15:00
Teaches maths, language and history, among other lessons. Political education is heavily increased at this point, preparing the pupil for his Party Entrance exam.

After secondary school, pupils enter the Party Entrance exam which places them into the Upper Party or the Lower Party of the Collectivist Party of Vistulange, where they begin working for the bureaucracy.

Primary School
Starts at 4, generally until 8
8:00-3:00
This part of schooling focuses on teaching the basics of Lojban, mathematics, the scientific method, and human psychology (so they can better understand themselves), and health (which mixes with what other nations call physical education; it is a class focused on keeping oneself in good shape). It is also the part where we begin looking into the students' inclinations, taking note of their interests and talents.

Secondary School
Starts around 8, generally until 14
Time varies.
This is where a student's inclinations are fully explored. All students must continue taking Lojban, mathematics, and health, and they must also take "responsible citizenship" classes, but the rest of their classes are tailored to them. A student who in Primary School expressed interest in animals might take biology and/or zoology, a student who expressed interest in computers might take computer science, and so on. Students who are not drawn in by those classes will drop them and take other classes based on other interests, and a student's own stated preference is always taken into account.
Since the focus of this part of schooling is on finding out what path of study and career would suit a student, the age at which it ends is much more flexible. Students can graduate as early as 10, and secondary schools cater to students until 16; a student whose path has not been found by then will move on to Quaternary School rather than Tertiary School, which I'll explain further down.

Tertiary School
Starts upon graduation from Secondary or Quaternary School. Graduation age varies highly, but the median is 20.
Time varies.
Akin to Slafstopian "Specialist School", this is where students learn about their particular path. Requirements for Lojban, mathematics, and health still exist for first-time students, but second-time students (see Quaternary School) may test out of them.

Quaternary School
Age varies.
Time varies.
It has happened that Tertiary School students and working adults have realized that the path chosen for them is something they don't want or aren't suited for. In those cases, most people quit their work or tertiary schooling and go to Quaternary School. It is often humorously called "Second Secondary School", which is a very accurate description of what it is. Students are given various classes until it's figured out what they like and what they're good at; once they have a basic understanding of that, they're shipped off to Tertiary School.
Although the majority of Quaternary School students already have some Tertiary School under their belt, Secondary School students above the age of 16 are sent here directly. This is mostly so that near-adults aren't stuck with a bunch of young teens and preteens for years on end.

Continued Education
Many Lojbos also elect to take classes in their spare time, despite being satisfied with their current career path. Most of these classes are artistic in nature (painting, gardening, creative writing, etc.), although it's not unheard-of for someone to take a science class to better understand the world around them. There is no universally-accepted system for doing this; some cities teach these classes in their tertiary or quaternary schools, sometimes alongside their tertiary or quaternary students. Some of our larger cities have set up a special "Quinary School" system for this purpose.

Education in Thesan is mandatory for all children aged 6-19. The school year runs from mid September to mid June and Winter holiday from mid December to mid January, for a total of 200 days of school during the year (approx.), schooldays are from monday to friday and till university are composed by max 5 hours of teaching.

Thesan has a scandinavian-based educational system, with almost all schools state-owned (and totally free) and can be divided in 6 parts (including not mandatory schools):

(Olin Rines) (age: 3-5)
Not mandatory, schools that specialize in entertainment and eventual exploitation of children potential abilities, eventual teaching has a limit of 1 hour per day, other 5 hours of school must be dedicated to children entertainment. Used by the vast majority of thesan children (96%), they're totally free for families and are totally town-subsided due to lower education communalism.

(Feldi Rines) (age: 6-10)
Mandatory, in the first year of elementary school the students are mostly playing educational games, learning social structures, learning the alphabet, basic addition and subtraction, children also have an introductory test to let teacher know if the student is above the grade average or is in need of some assistance at school. From second to fifth grade are introducted to basic maths, geography, history, art, science and social studies. Tests are to be taken home and shown to parents , they have only an unofficial voting system and a compulsory (for the teacher) comment and analysis. Each school (like all other grades except high specialization schools) offers books and other scholastic material totally free.

(Vaniera Rines) (age: 11-14)
Mandatory, students begin getting grades for their work. Vote system starts from 1 (gravely inadequate) to 10 (impressive), the higher their average grade is, the higher the superior school level they will attend.
Subjects are several and selectioned to prepare in each branch of education. There aren't facultative subjects.

(Suveilan Rines) (age: 15-19)
Mandatory, like all other levels is primarily based on public schools: In 2007, 93% of superior school students attended public schools. There are 2 main branches of superior schools: Technical (electronics, accountance, carpentry, mechanics etc.) and Courtly (language, history, art etc.).
Each school has a grade (depending of their teaching quality) from 5 (Excellent) to 1 (Poor), each student, based on the average grade achieved, can enter in top level schools or in lowest.
It's possible for students to pass to a superior school upper grade supporting a supplementary exam and is possible also to change superior school specialization in each moment (still supporting another exam).
At the end of superior school each student must support a final exam called "Superior Exam" for achieve superior school diploma.

(Numador Rines) (age: 20-25/26)
Not mandatory, achieving for all superior schools graduated, subjects taught may vary depending on the faculty chosen, actually engineering faculties are the most frequented, followed by medicine and art.
Only 5% of thesan students frequent private universities, this mostly due public universities offer extremely high quality teaching (actually there's only 1 private university in the top ten, at the 9th place).
At the end of university each student must pass a final exam: the "Academic Final Exam", it's considered passed with a score of 70/100.

(Mil Danva Rines) (age: 25/26-27/28)
Not mandatory, provide extremely high grade subjects and are a further thoroughness of engineering, medicine, art and accountance subjects (depending by the frequented university)
Only best students (who has scored min 95/100 at AFE) can frequent these schools and normally 99% of who graduates from a high specialization school finds an highly qualified job in 2-3 days from the graduation.

It's possible for gifted students to pass grade supporting an exam till last year of superior school.

The Vampirian educational system is broken down by the following:

Early Age School (EAS)
Ages - 3 to 5
Not mandatory. Basically used as a daycare system, children learn the beginning skills of speech and (for 5 year olds) the beginnings of mathematics and other educational subjects.
Time: EAS usually takes place at 7pm until midnight.

Regular Age School (RAS)
Ages - 6 to 13
Mandatory. Students learn the basic educational subjects as well as regular and advance communication skills.
Time: RAS usually takes place at 10pm until 2am.

Advanced Age School (AAS)
Ages - 14 to 16
Mandatory. The AAS is one of the most important educational systems in Vampirum. It's main purpose is to help teens into their transitions into fully fledged vampires at age 16. Subjects such as bat transformation, bite training/self control, and sight/senses training are just some of the many things students learn at the AAS level.
Time: AAS usually takes place at 10pm until 3am.

Universal Level Age School (ULAS)
Ages - 18 to various ages
Not mandatory. The ULAS is a higher educational level where students learn universal subjects that are used worldwide. Students in the ULAS are expected to have an understanding of the basic level skills before being accepted into the ULAS.
Time: ULAS times varies depending on the school and location.

Note: At the age of 17 young vampires are encouraged to take time from their education in order to better assimilate themselves into the vampire culture.
