As we are a British Commonwealth, the term Leftenant is widely used. However, Lieutenant is also an accepted use.

In the ancient language/Pagian, the word for Lieutenant is Siadkir, which literally translates into "side captain", the word for "captain" being Kirat. In English, we'd just say "lieutenant."

The Royal Kouralian Army uses two ranks:

Lieutenant and Second Lieutenant

The former is of a higher rank (by one grade) than the latter. They are both pronounced correctly: Lef-ten-ant.
Olwe wrote:In Mechwarrior 2, Jeremy Hawksworth's rank is specifically stated as "Leftenant General"... other than that I don't know, since I've never served in the military in RL and assume most of the books I've read have taken liberties to some extent.

Yeah, that game's BS. IRL it is Lieutenant for both Britain and America's military, with Britain pronouncing it correctly and America pronouncing it Lou-ten-ant.

To our understanding, however, both pronunciations of the English word are spelled "Lieutenant." Are we mistaken?

The British pronunciation is with an "f" but it is spelt the same way

As English is not our native language we use neither but when we speak English we say Leftenant and write it as Lieutenant.

Lieutenant, two grades:

Army/Air Force/Marines: O-1 (2LT/2nd Lt/2ndLt*) and O-2 (1LT/1st Lt/1stLt)
Navy: O-2 (LTJG) and O-3 (LT)

When written in the other official languages of CEV**, they translate to:

A/AF/MC: O-1 (Alferez/Shàowèi***/少尉) and O-2 (Teniente/Zhōngwèi/中尉)
N: O-2 (Alferez de Navio/Zhōngwèi/中尉) and O-3 (Teniente de Navio/Shàngwèi/上尉)

In all cases, the rank is pronounced as "loo-tenant" in English.

* Army/Air Force/Marine Corps abbreviations.
** When written in Visayan, the Spanish term is used. When spoken in Visayan, the English term is used.

In Olwe, Lieutenant is the standard but foreigners who join our military after becoming citizens or serve in our Foreign Legion are allowed to use the alternate pronunciation if they find it more comfortable.

"Kachet" is the anglicised Felbahn word for Lieutenant. "Kàбét" is how to spell it.

In Yorkopolitan Dutch we use "Luitenant", which is the same as the Dutch version of the word, with "Eersteklas" or "Tweedeklas" being added before the "Luitenant" when in usage. The Field Officer is referred to as "Veldoffisier" in Yorkopolitan Dutch. In Yorkonian we use "Legyato" to refer to the First Grade Lieutenants, while we use "Lyetnant" to refer to the Second Grade Lieutenants. Field Officers are referred to as "officiyal campya", literally translated as "officer of the field".

We have three grades of lieutenant, they are (in the order from high to low): Field Officer, First Grade, and Second Grade.

As are required by law to speak English, we take how words are read and spoken very seriously.
For the most part, the word is said as it is written so in this case it is Lieu (loo).

But as a rank it does not only appear in Army or Navy since can be one in Police Force, Fire Rescue, Wildlife Protection, Medical Care and even for several Office roles. Also mainly between Sergeant and Captain in Promotions Ladder.

Being Francophone, we pronounce it /ljøt.nɑ̃/. When speaking English, however, we do pronounce it /lɛfˈtɛnənt/. It's always spelt "lieutenant," though, since this is the only way, in either English or French, that the word can be spelt.

In the Star Army of Yamatai, the equivalent rank is 大尉 ("Taii") (see Star Army of Yamatai ranks wiki) and the rank insignia is two gold stripes on the sleeve near the cuff. Lieutenant is the preferred English term but is not official.
The Star Army is the military arm of the Yamatai Star Empire (FT, RP).

Officer candidates upon entry to the military college start with the rank of lieutenant (pronounced 'lef-tenant'), although they graduate with the rank of captain, so the term is not used much outside of the military college.
