Xeklivian Legionnaires don't have arm patches to show rank, but instead they have a colored vertical stripe on their helmets to signify their rank and/or class.

For example, a normal rifleman legionnaire has no stripe, but an NCO has a red stripe across the left eye visor of his helmet. If the legionnaire is a shotgunner for example, he has a green stripe across his helmet, and if that shotgunner were an NCO, he'd have a thin red stripe next to that.
Just your average divine gaseous being encased in a chitinous shell of forged ash. Don't hit on me, silly mortalflames! I advocate fuedalism.

Military ranks generally aren't shown on the field for safety reasons, but off the field (especially for ceremonial purposes) the type of headdress says a lot: generally, the larger and fancier a helmet is in a parade, the higher rank they are.

Some examples of military ranks, that may not apply to all units, and is somewhat out of date:

The Imperial Army is one of many sections of society in Awyyn that still adheres to the strict Caste system of our ancestors.

As such all non ranked soldiers are still referred to as Warriors. Warriors are typically led in squads by the strongest men and women of the Warrior Houses, with the Nobles serving as the majority of our officers.

Warriors -Anyone born or adopted into a Warrior Household, those serving the Navy are referred to as Sailors, and those in the Airforce as Airmen. In society all are Warriors and are treated with great respect.

House Commanders -Those born into the stronger, larger, and more renown Warrior Houses are made Commanders. They lead squads of Warriors in varying size from 4 wo/men to 30 based on their experiencing and standing.

Warrior Patriarchs/Matriarchs -The heads of Warrior Houses have the immediate command of all members of their house.

Captains -Captain is the lowest rank whom can hold a command. Both Warriors and Nobles are capable of achieving this rank. They are roughly on par with leadership skills of House Commanders, but may also command small fortifications or Air Groups.

Major -Only members of Noble Houses can be appointed as Majors. They are typically responsible for the leadership of Battalions.

Commander/Commodore -Only appointed from members of Noble Houses. Typically responsible for Regiments, Bases, or Singular Ships/Airships. In the Navy and Airforce they are known as Commodores.

Marshals -Appointed directly from Noble and Warriors Houses that are members of the Royeaux Coven (Those houses in direct service of the thrown). There are only three appointed at any given time (one for each branch of service) The current Air Marshal is the Emperors Cousin. They are responsible for over seeing their individual branches of the Awyyn Military. They are appointed directly by the throne.

High Steward -The High Steward serves as Head of the Military for the Empire. As well as having direct authority over the Imperial Magisters. Matriarch Imladria Von' Finroth is the current Lady High Steward and answers directly to the Emperor.

The Throne -The Emperor/Empress has overall command of their forces, and may press their power at any given time. This is typically only done in times of war with the general day to day operations being left to the Marshals and the High Steward.

Outside of any rank

Imperial Guards-The best Warriors and Magisters in the Royeaux Coven serve as the guards of the Imperial Palace, and the Emperor himself. They are not considered part of the Warrior Caste, only serving to protect the Imperial Family. They answer only to the Throne.

Army/Assault Corps/Naval Infantry/Patrol Corps

Private - An enlistee, likely still in training and unfit for battle. With the exception of the Patrol Corps, Privates are often required to reach the rank of Private First-Class before they are assigned to a squad.
Private First-Class - The final rank of enlistee, lowest rank in the active military and the backbone of the fireteam and squad, which are the backbones of the platoon and company and so on.
Lance Corporal - The lowest rank of an NCO. Commands a group and is the second-in-command of a squad.
Corporal - Second-in-command of a fireteam and commander of a squad.
Sergeant - Commands a squad and it's components.
Sergeant First-Class - Second-in-command of a platoon and an assistant to his CO.
Master Sergeant - Serves as an aide and field coordinator to the COs of companies and battalions and often represents the interests of Enlisted soldiers in divisions and command.
Corps Sergeant of the Army/Assault Corps/Naval Infantry/Rangers - A special enlisted rank held by one soldier from each branch. Serves as an aid to the Commander of their respective branch, usually representing the Enlisted.

Army/Assault Corps/Naval Infantry/Patrol Corps Officers

Warrant Officer - A specialist rank, often held by medical technicians, combat pilots, digital warfare specialists and logistical liaison directors. Members of an Elite Fireteam usually hold particular rank.
Command Warrant Officer - A specialist rank often held by senior members of professions mentioned above. Commanders of an Elite Fireteam hold this rank.
Lieutenant - Commands a platoon.
Captain - Commands a sector. Typically the final rank in which an officer can be expected to start field-commanding.
Major - Serves as the assistant to a Lieutenant Colonel in a battalion.
Lieutenant Colonel - Commands a battalion or serves as an executive officer to a Colonel in a division.
Colonel - Commands a division. This also often serves as an honorary rank for notable veterans or for commanders of military combat battalions.
Marshal - Commands 2+ divisions, organized into a "Marshal Guard" or "Tactical Army". Appointed by the Marshal of his or her respective branch. Also serves as a governor rank for some military governors in colonies.
Marshal of the Army/Assault Corps/Naval Infantry/Patrol Corps - The commander of a military branch. Reports directly to the Lord Marshal or the Military Branch of the government.

Aquatic/Space Navy Enlisted

Shipman Recruit - Lowest enlistee rank. The men and women who hold this rank are more often than not new recruits (as the name suggests) that have yet to be assigned to any certain task.
Honorary Shipman - An enlistee rank recently assigned to a task division (deck/administrative, aviation, medical, construction, engineering/hull). Has yet to earn specific rank.
Shipman - The highest enlistee rank. Shipman is used as a universal term for those in equal rank in each task division (Seaman = deck/administrative, Airman = aviation, Constructionman = construction, Medical Corpsman = hospital, Fireman = engineering/hull).
Petty Officer - The lowest officer rank. Petty Officers are usually assigned to command small task forces or to oversee each task division (Seaman = deck/administrative, Airman = aviation, Constructionman = construction, Medical Corpsman = hospital, Fireman = engineering/hull).
Petty Officer First-Class - Acts as an assistant to the Chief Petty Officer.
Chief Petty Officer - Commands a naval brigade. Also oversees multiple other ships.
Master Chief Petty Officer - Serves as an assistant to the Command Master Chief Petty Officer, as well as being an administrator for several smaller naval brigades.
Command Master Chief Petty Officer - Commands a fleet. This rank is mostly held by captains and fleet captains.
Fleet Master Chief Petty Officer - Commands and oversees multiple fleets. Also serves as an adviser to the commander of their respective branch.
Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy - The commander of the navy. Reports directly to the Lord Marshal or the Military Branch of the government.

(I am currently still working on my insignia.)

In the Imperial Dominion, the Emperor is the highest authority in the military. Directly under his command are the Lord/Lady Admiral and the Lector General. They control the Imperial Fleet and the Imperial Legion respectively.

Imperial Legion Ranks:
-Private
-Corporal
-Sergeant
-Major
-Colonel
-General
-Lector General
-Emperor

Imperial Fleet Ranks:
-Fleetman
-Chief
-Master Chief
-Lieutenant
-Captain
-Fleet Admiral
-Lord/Lady Admiral
-Emperor

In general, the Imperial Dominion's military does not make use of visible insignia. All officers and soldiers are expected to remember their chain of command. This is partially due to paranoia on the part of the officers (what better way to disrupt things from within than smuggling people into the military to assassinate officers?) but also due to Alor society. Since it is important and vital to know or at least recognize one's superior in society, the Alor do it by default.

A full general has the three-star insignia in China. Special honours of a four- or five-star insignia can be granted by the minister of defence, but they remain rated to an Under-Secretary of the civil service. Nominally, the minister of defence holds a five-star rank in war, though there is no title for this rank; his title remains "principal secretary of state" in peace.

Same as the United States Armed Forces, except Army and Air Force five-star general ranks are instead called "Field Marshal" and "Air Marshal", respectively. And the Air Force still has warrant officers.

Upon promotion to E-6, an enlisted person may apply for training as a warrant officer. Warrant officers are technical experts who lead specialist units that require an officer's leadership skills but the specialty expertise that only an enlisted person has the chance to develop, and helicopter pilots. For example, heavy weapons units, field artillery targeting units, aircraft maintenance units, etc.

Upon completion, they are given a promotion to Warrant Officer 1. Upon promotion to Chief Warrant Officer, they are granted a commission by the Dictator. Upon promotion to Senior Chief Warrant Officer, they are eligible to attend Officer Candidate School and receive a commission as a line officer with the rank of 1st Lieutenant/Lieutenant (junior grade)

Anyone holding an undergraduate degree may apply to Officer Candidate School and receive a line officer commission as a 2nd Lieutenant/Ensign. Promotion to Major/Lieutenant Commander requires a postgraduate degree (often earned by attending the Imperial Defense College), and promotion to Brigadier General/Commodore requires having served on the Imperial General Staff, the body of tacticians, logistical experts, and strategists that ensure the Empire will always make the best military decisions.
