South State Auditor Freezes Education Budget Amidst Middle School Language Controversy
This is Hillary Nantes, speaking to you from the Board of Education building in Holon, South State. Amidst the controversy surrounding South State governor James Prenevaou's proposal to eliminate local language instruction in the 4th grade, State Auditor Helene Tuwin announced earlier today a freeze on the state's education budget until the controversy is resolved. Following the Governor's proposal, the Libertarian leadership in the state assembly has refused to draft a law reflecting the proposal, and has not acted to make any change regarding language instruction. In South, as well as across West Cedarbrook, local language instruction switched from the pirmary local language to the secondary, depending on the ethnic makeup of the district. Observers at the state assembly believe that assemblymen have been waiting for a reaction from West Cedarbrook Treasurer Nina Silver regarding the legality of such a change in appropriations before introducing legislation. But since the announcement of the proposal, the issue has remained in limbo. At this time there has been no statement from the governor's office, or the state treasurer or solicitor general challenging Tuwin's announcement. Tuwin bolted the Libertarian ticket to win election last September, has asked the Assembly to forestall passage of the budget until she can ascertain
the legality of the Governor's proposal, and obtain answers from him about keeping the secondary local language line at the same level as last year. In an interview this morning with 9SEE reporters, Tuwin explained "This issue has remained in legal contention for too long. Further indecision by the Governor and the Assembly will result in sever discrepancies in the financial management of school districts across the state. I am taking this action as a preventative measure, so that school budgeting can proceed with certainty, now that we are one month into the school year. From my perspective, any changes desired by the Governor or the Assembly will need to be instituted in the 2016 school year."
Also in Holon, last year's Conservative candidate for Governor, Linda Dautrieve gave her support for Tuwin's action. "Once again we have seen this governor take rash action, with little thought given to the financial consequences that will have to be borne by the people of South State. I applaud the Auditor's action, and encourage the State Assembly to bury the latest stupidity coming from the Governor's Residence."
Ocidenia: Brozhav Commits Military Against Protestors
James Sinkewicz reports from embatteled Paradisa, where the Ocidenian strongman Simeon Brozhav has announced the deployment of the Ocidenian military against secession minded rebels in that nations north and south.
In an official statement, the administration of Prime Minister Simeon Brozhav has decided to launch full scale military operations against secessionist rebels in the north and south of the country. The Ocidenian Commonwealth Armed Forces will be responsible for launching an assault on the secessionist territories in the north and south in accordance to the government orders and the parliament’s approval.
This decision was not taken immediately as the administration has been debating on this issue for weeks, before coming to the final decision today. In fact, the most recent attempts by the government to handle the crisis purely consisted of diplomatic efforts as the administration consistently attempted to renew dialog with the leaderships of both secessionist movements to no effect. The latest attempt to do so has been carried out even after the recent declaration of “total war” against the government of Ocidenia by the secessionists. After the National Security Committee and the Department of Defense had taken this decision, Prime Minister Simeon Brozhav addressed the parliament requesting that a resolution approving the authorization of anti-terrorist military operations in northern and southern Ocidenia be passed. This morning, the parliament had officially passed the resolution with a unanimous vote approving military action against the secessionists in the north and south. In accordance to the terms of the resolution, the Ocidenian Commonwealth Armed Forces will now be responsible for carrying out said operations in northern and southern Ocidenia. The nation's regular army has also received approval to launch an incursion into the secessionist-held territories.
Sources close to the Ocidenian military report the assault would not be divided into stages as the Ocidenian Commonwealth Armed Forces plan to strike the secessionist-held northern and southern Ocidenia on land and from the air all at once, while the Ocidenian Naval Forces even plan to launch strikes at northern Ocidenia from the country’s territorial waters.
In Wrycova, the Department of External Affairs has been monitoring the situation closely. The turmoil in Ocidenia is viewed with concern, mainly due to the possibility of spill over into neighboring countries, any signs of efforts by Western powers to prop up the controversial Brozhav administration, and increasing risk to markets and investments in western South Conitia. One source close to External Affairs commented, off the record, "We can't realistically expect anything but turmoil as long as this coup installed government holds power in Paradisa. Of course, it is for the people of Ocidenia to decide what they want, but as long as democratic elections and rights are squelched by their administration, there's going to be trouble."
The turmoil in Ocidenia is rumored to be on the agenda at ongoing meetings of the Southeast Oriental Entente, in Wiley, Masseau.
