People's Rating Department: Freedom Index (DEFUNCT)

Postby Namor » Sun Oct 14, 2012 6:13 pm

PEOPLE'S RATING DEPARTMENT OF NAMOR
Freedom Index

DEFUNCT, DON'T POST, DAMNIT
The People's Rating Department has realized that many ratings bureaus that measure freedoms in various countries are terribly biased. For example, the Freedom House Ratings System used by the Luziycan government is totally biased when it comes to rating countries that do not have prohibition and are communist. Other ratings departments are just totally....confusing.

Which is why the PRD has set up its very own Freedom Index, a reliable (and we mean it, reliable) ratings system which will accurately measure how much freedom one nation has. In order to accurately calculate how much freedom a nation has, the PRD has decided to check in on three factors: civil rights, political rights and economic rights. By checking in on these three factors, the PRD is able to accurately calculate one nation's freedom in general.

THE RATING SYSTEM
Ratings will go from a scale of 1-10, with 1 being an oppressive hellhole with no freedom and 10 being a free, anarchic paradise.

1-3.999: Oppressive Hellhole
Oppressive Hellholes are countries with little to no freedom. You are subject to torture, and your leader is a cruel dictator who does not care about the well-being of the common people. Economic freedoms are so low that the country has an imploded economy.

4-6.999: Partially Free
Nations whose people are ruled by a benevolent dictator, who, despite his/her authoritarianism, is iron-willed and actually cares for the people. Citizens do not have so many rights, but they don't have no rights at all.

7-10 (Free)
Nations who are free, and truly free. Everyone has a right to say whatever he/she wants, getting to the point where they can cuss as well. Countries ranked the highest within this category probably don't have a government at all---citizens can do almost anything.

We were mice, hiding in the shadows, hoping the giants would not see us. No more. Humanity is no longer on the defense. We are the giants now."

Your leader's name: Akiyasu, His Most Serene Highness
How many parties do your country have? Officially zero, as they are effectively banned or forced to be converted as "clan" to fit into the system.

POLITICAL FREEDOMS
Are elections held in your nation? No. There are some attempts in doing so during the civil war and afterwards by the pro-republican factions, but they tend to be rigged or sabotaged to the point no votes are ultimately cast and counted.

If so, does every political party regardless of ideology welcome to participate in? See above. Even for the cosmetically important "elections", any people who openly denounce the current system and (especially) the emperor will be dispatched quickly.

Can people ridicule the government in a way that's unharmful? Basically no. The only way that is mostly accepted is criticising the government carefully while emphasising one's reverence of the emperor and blame the source of the problem somewhere else (like corrupt officials).

Can people criticize the government through media? No. The above standard applies, but even more tightly-controlled.

Can people assemble and set up opposition leagues? Technically yes, but due to the difficulties of not committing the crime of disrespect towards the emperor and his imperial government, or tripping the local government too much to be safe from the government, effectively only non-political assembly (like scholar assembly and farmer cooperatives) is allowed.

Does your nation outlaw any ideology? All ideologies that do not revere the emperor are banned. That include pretty much all republican ideologies.

CIVIL FREEDOMS
Do people have a right to a fair trial? No.

Torture? Often used, although mostly secretly.

Is slavery state-sponsored? Yes, to a degree. It is closer to indentured service, which is still borderline slavery.

Does the government respect citizens' private lives? Usually yes, as long as it does not involve disrespecting the emperor or his empire. Everything that is not illegal can be done without much consequences.

Is there media censorship in your nation? If so, how strong is it? Yes. All media have to comply with the aforementioned laws, as well as being subjected to censorship by the Imperial Censorate. Everything they refuse to record does not exist in the empire, and they have the means to enforce it.

Does your nation respect LGBT/LGBTQ rights(the rights of gays and lesbians)? Yes. They are seen as the same as heterosexual relations.

ECONOMIC FREEDOMS
Are citizens allowed to privately own industries? Yes, although the ownership is usually applied to extended families and clans rather than individuals, many of the industries are privately-owned, with the "public" industries being owned by noble clans who happen to run the local government and use them for public services for a price.

OTHER FREEDOMS
Does your nation welcome refugees that are fleeing from oppressive regimes? Only if said oppressive regimes are enemies of Tuthina. Non-welcomed refugees tend to be arrested and sent back as fast as possible.

Does your nation respect LGBT/LGBTQ rights(the rights of gays and lesbians)? Absolutely.
ECONOMIC FREEDOMS
Are citizens allowed to privately own industries? Sure.
OTHER FREEDOMS
Does your nation welcome refugees that are fleeing from oppressive regimes? Usually, but it helps if they're fleeing a regime we don't particularly like as well.
