This nationstate was a loooooong time coming.

When I was in middle school in 1998, I began a project to create the perfect government with a couple friends. Took about a year to complete, we called it the Utopian Empire of Atlantis and the factbook we wrote for it was about thirty typed pages long. (Still have a copy.) I had been a pretty advanced reader and had finished Plato's Republic a few months before... so it got my mind spinning. The whole system revolved around a ring of six semi-autonomous councils and really got my mind spinning on the essentials of comparative government. In hindsight, it was a top-heavy system, not enough dissemination of power, it lacked focus. But the concept never left me. I had decided at the time that the capital would be in French Polynesia, because of their isolation from the rest of the world.

So we tweaked it and worked on it through middle school and high school, wrote and rewrote. Finally, other things caught my interest and I shelved the project. Joined the army a couple years after high school and I had begun roleplaying online with a chat-based group on AOL called Bravo Faction. Since I had real military experience, they put me in charge of the infantry group and I began developing my idea of the ideal tactical strike group. I researched and researched, wrote and rewrote, eventually came up with a concept called First Lance, which would be a completely autonomous assault force centered around the idea of using hovercraft and assault helicopters to land heavy assault forces rapidly including vehicles, use small-diameter cannons on naval assets for high volumes of artillery support and the concept of different teams to do different jobs on the battlefield evolved, but with totally integrated force planning.

So when I stumbled onto NationStates, it was an opportunity to test the new unit I'd created in RP combat, (initially all I joined NS to do) but discovering that other people had, like me, written governments, I re-read the old UEA files and so was born Marquesan as a hybrid of Japanese feudalism and my old Atlantean system. A whole hell of a lot of work and rethinking later was born my system as it presently exists.
