What calendar does your nation use?

Postby Radiatia » Fri Jan 13, 2012 6:17 am

I was thinking about the calendar system that I use for Radiatia and realised I really ought to explain it.

While we use the same months and days as the Gregorian Calendar, the year system is different mainly due to the almost complete absence of Christianity in Radiatia.

I use a floating timeline (MT) for Radiatia, so whatever year I use is always assumed to be the current year.

However I realised that if I were to use "real time" you would end up with 2011 containing four elections, a revolution, two wars and a character dying of old age who was quite young at the start of the year.

So at the time of writing the year is LET 32 in Radiatia (with each new millennium given a different name).

What system do you guys use?

2013 Edit:

Actually I've changed my system to one of roughly one month = one year. When this thread was written it was LET 32 ICly. Now, April 2013, it's LET 49.

For all international transaction we use the international standard, for internal use though criticism has arisen on the very base of the "normal" system. Should we really base our entire date sysetem on some religious legend? Consequently internally we use the French Revolutionary Calendar based on the common year 1789, the "Year of Liberty". Also:

Currently, we are using the calendar which counted at Rome, Italy. Contains, 12 months per year. 30/31 days every month, except for February(28/29[every four year]).

The United Kingdom of The Cascadium uses International Standard Date/Time when participating in Foreign Affairs and Development though internally we use Cascadian Persolementum Calender which lasts 360 days and consists of 6 months of 60 days each. The months are
    1.) Mindwater (1st January-1st March)
    2.) Soulight (2nd March-30th April)
    3.) Lifefire (1st May-29th June)
    4.) Airheart (30th June-28th August)
    5.) Earthbody (29th August-27th October)
    6.) Darkconscience (29th October-26th December)

Our date is written as YYYY/MM/DD so today for instance would be 2012/01/13 or 2012 Mindwater 13.

This reminds me of a debate currently raging in Radiatia as to whether or not we should adopt metric time.

Imperial Calender

Holocene Era
The Holocene Era (HE), is a year numbering system that adds exactly 10,000 years to the Common Era (CE) system, placing its first year near the beginning of the Holocene epoch and the Neolithic revolution. The year 2011 CE can be transformed into a Holocene year by adding the digit "1" before it, making it 12011 HE. The Holocene Era year numbering system is used by the Imperial Calendar.
Months, & Weeks
Each week consists of 6 days. There are 6 weeks in a month. There are currently 10 months in a year.
This means a month consists of 36 days. Every month consists of 36 days.
Intercalarius
This is a 5 day period at the end of the year which is not part of any month or week. It is required as the 10 months do not account for all the days of the year. During leap years Intercalarius is 6 days long. As the days of Intercalarius are not part of a week, they are not named as the days of the week are - Instead they are numbered.
Perpetual Calendar
The Imperial Calendar is a perpetual calendar. This means the calendar does not have to be replaced every year. The calendar for 12011 HE may be used for 12012 HE and onwards. The is enabled by Intercalarius. The days of Intercalarius are not part of a month or week. The next year follows on from the the last day of Decius, rather than the last day of Intercalarius. This means it always ends on Marcius and begins on Solisius, every year. Hence they calendar does not need to be changed.

Imperial Clock

The Empire uses a doudecimal metric system of measurement. The Imperial Clock is consistent with this doudecimal system of measures. The numbers given in the image (below) are in decimal, with the exception of those on the clock face - which are duodecimal.

The Gregorian, boring I know. If you want a quirk, there a few zealous Republicans who advocate renaming the 7th and 8th months Washington and Churchill rather than continuing to honor the tyrants C. Iulius Caesar and Imp. Caesar divi filius Augustus.

Because of our main "planet" location on a moon of a gas giant in another solar system, we have completely different measurements for everything. However, for international business, we use the standard calendar, with the exception of the year being from the founding of Dagnia. Date format is typically in the YYYY.MM.DD format.

We use our traditional calendar, based on the movements of Ano, Rireinu, and Usa around each other and themselves. So our year has 331 days (except every third year has 332 days) and 11 months.

The Lyranian day is 22 h 24 min long. One orbit of Usa takes 678 hours, or roughly 30.4 Lyranian days. One orbit of Rireinu takes 7,422 hours, or 331.3 Lyranian days.

The Lyranian year consists of 331 days, divided into 11 months of 30 days each, except the first month has 31 days. Every three years is a "balancing year" of 332 days, when the eleventh month also has 31 days. The year begins on winter solstice, which is the first day of the first month (eriusano eripayu). The months have numbers for names.

Besides months, the year is also divided into weeks of seven days each. The days of the week are named after the sun, the moon, and the five planets that are visible to the naked eye: anopayu, usapayu, amipayu, reipayu, minapayu, makopayu, hotapayu. Anopayu is a day of rest, or at least time and a half.

And the ten-day week?

Yes, that as well, though we defined every Quintidi and Décadi as days of rest and recreation. This actually makes for a 5-day-week, though we only use the Décades in daily life, as in: "The Football-game is on Quintidi, next décade"

Today it's CCXX-04-III-3 or Quartidi of the third Décade, in Nivôse of 220 AL (Anno Libertas). Year-Month-Décade-Day. In daily life usually only the last two numerals are given, the decade in roman and the day in standard numerals.

Also we celebrate the Sansculottides:

Jour des actions (Day of Policy)
Jour du génie (Day of Talent)
Jour du travail (Day of Work)
Jour de l'opinion (Day of Opinions)
Jour des récompenses (Day of honours)
Jour de la révolution (Day of Revolution)

Edit: better add the days of the Décade (and the months) to be complete. Note that each Quintidi and Décadi are days of rest and recreation.

The USSK uses the Runic Era calendar. To find the date in the standard year, you would subtract 250 from the year.

Current year: 2262 RE

Sunna's day [Sunday]

Manni's day [Monday]

Tyr's day [Tuesday]

Odin's day [Wednesday]

Thor's day [Thursday]

Frigga's day [Friday]

Wash day [Saturday]

-----------

Snowmoon [January]

Horning [February]

Lenting [March]

Ostara [April]

Merrymoon [May]

Midyear [June]

Haymoon [July]

Harvest [August]

Shedding [September]

Hunting [October]

Fogmoon [November]

Yule [December]

Example, today is Frigga's Day, the 13th of Snowmoon, in the year 2262

Beringovia uses that standard Gregorian calendar. However, the majority of the population is Orthodox Christian, and therefore uses the Julian calendar to determine the dates of religious observances. Hence, for example, Christmas is observed on January 7.

We follow the Alexandrian Calender. 12 months a year, 30 days a month, and the five days left over go to Christmas (27th December), Christmas Eve, Boxing Day (28th), Easter (determined by Lunar Calender), and New Year's Day (which is the 1st of February). If there's a leap year, we add a day to August.
