As for the reason - a being's perceived intelligence level is not an adequate - or morally sound - reason to deny them dignity, respect and freedom.

That is correct. And aren't certain animals even more intelligent in ways Humans couldn't possibly or simply do not understand, and to treat them arrogantly with our sense of intelligence is to simply turn our back on scientific progress?
