Most closely resembles German culture from the days of the Empire, particularly just before World War I. Of course, it's more modernized and possesses much more advanced technology, so blend the spirit of the past and the atmosphere of the future.

Okay. Take Victorian morality, the intolerance of alcohol in 1920s' America, and the political sway of Christianity from midieval times. Got those? Good.

Now, take the gun obbsessions of the American Southeast, the war-related behaviors of BOTH Texas and the pacifists that dot the nation, and toss in the "peace through superior firepower" doctrines of Ronald Reagan and the "domestic defense only" stance of Ron Paul.

For the government, take the patriotism of the most hardcore Americans, add the political turnout and excitement of the 2008 USA election cycles, and then crown three "enlightened philosopher kings" per Plato's "ship of state" theory.

Now that you have all that chaos, take the average American school's stance on drugs and double it. Add a healthy dose of rednecks and Southern drawls. Give everyone Dick Cheney's love and approval of oil.

Mix that altogether with the entire political agenda of the American Republican Party: both neo-conservatives, normal conservatives, and paleo-conservatives, but mostly social conservatives. Give the Religious Right the power to set the nation's policy.

You'll need addition ingredients such as capital punishment, modest dress, and puritianical laws of decency.

Finally, pour a vat of Christianity into the pot and let boil. Stir constantly until the mixture is consistent and completely blended as one.

As it boils, add sentient turtles and mushrooms in abundance and toss in the acceptance and tolerance of this novelty found only in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Pour into glass jars and sit in refrigerator. Cover in ice, but leave all other ideologies and recipies untouched. Unplug refrigerator so that all other ideologies spoil and must be removed, until your TS batter is the only one cold.

Remove jar, open lid, and pour into bowl.

Enjoy your TurtleShroom!

There is literally a piss stain on my pants from reading that. I haven't laughed so hard at something on NS yet. Bravo
Oh, is this sig supposed to make you laugh?

Postby Helladria » Sat Nov 12, 2011 2:41 am

First, the Helladric Empire consists of a dominant culture that makes up half the population and three other native cultures that together make up about forty percent of it. The dominant culture is Helladrian, which is rooted in a kernel of ancient Greek culture with a liberal application of creative license. That is to say, that it's mostly all made up. It can be characterized as being highly liberal in both personal and economic freedoms, yet very egalitarian in matters of social and legal status of persons. It is pretty democratic save for some historically disillusioning events that have helped to perpetuate its affection for the emperor. It has a long history of philosophy and other work in the humanities, and has a very highly educated populace on average though it is skewed in favor of the liberal and fine arts. Helladrians are culturally and economically imperialistic, constantly looking to expand their own rights and influence in foreign countries, by shaping their political systems, economic systems, and cultural systems to reflect their own. The dominant religion amongst Helladrians is a mysticical theurgy that purports the existence of "spiritual" entities and an immortal soul for all people, but it lacks a deity or any sort of prescribed dogma. Helladrians believe that such entities exist and can communicate with and exert power over the observed world, and that a person can communicate more effectively with the unobserved world through altered states of mind. Helladrians as a rite of passage, seek the patronage of one such entity to watch over and aid them in life. Helladrians are fairly conservative in their dress and their sexual conduct, and are almost devoutly monogamous. Despite the highly egalitarian attitudes of Helladrians, they've never in living memory seen a sapient creature that isn't human, so if they encountered something of that nature, they may be inclined toward a fair bit of prejudice.

The next group is the Bessarians which are an unflattering mix of Mongol, Arabic, and native American stereotypes. They've long been a thorn in the side of settled peoples like the Helladrians. Bessarians originally had a culture that was very much patriarchal and centered around both personal and familial honor. They had little use for education and high culture. Bessarians have their own animistic religion which attributes a spirit to all living creatures (that can be observed without a microscope) as well as things of significance that are not alive (e.g. the sun, moon, personal possessions, and even the earth itself). Bessarians also had a culture that approved of polygamy and used a strong gender-based division of labor and status. Their nearly diametrically opposed culture to the Helladrians, coupled with its characteristically fierce independence led to more than a century of nationalistic revolts after being conquered. Things have begun to change today, as many Bessarians are becoming Helladricized. In many cases, young Bessarians are being brought up in a connected culture and are adopting Helladrian values and passing them on to their own children so that two distinct values systems have emerged among Bessarians, and the Helladricized group is growing with every successive year.

The third group is the Ashrians which are based loosely off of the Dutch and Swiss. The Ashrians were originally a people that dwelled in the mountains north of Helladria, but when the civilization in the Grön River Valley evacuated to the south, the Ashrians moved in and experienced a rapid development of their society. They quickly became seafarers and traders, and as they grew their already decentralized aristocracy became moreso. Ashrians are renowned for their sense in business and finance, and support Helladric free trade policies. Even before their incorporation into Helladria, Ashrian culture was already heavily influenced by its neighbor to the south, and so they have many of the same values, though they are less fanatical about them. Ashrians have managed to grow both with Helladria and distinct from it, and constantly battle to limit excessive Helladrian influence in legislation. Ashrian communities have sprung up all over Helladria, though they tend to remain distinct and usually separated by neighborhood, even after generations of living with and around Helladrians. Ashrians don't really have any native religions, but Helladrian theurgy is the most common, though in the north, Svartic animism has crept in.

The fourth group is the Svartic which are based off of the vikings. Even today, many people in Svarbald live in the subarctic wilderness, and piracy and even blatant coastal raiding dips down off of the Ashrian and eastern Helladrian coasts. This happened to be the reason that Helladria has felt pressed to move north to occupy Svarbald as a territory. The life of Svartic people is hard, some live in small towns, but often fall prey to bands that prowl the expansive wilderness. Those who don't settle either hunt for food or prey on the hard work of villages. Not all the Svartic put up with it though and many join the Helladrian military for the purpose of being able to escape the hard life or protect their families or communities. Like the Bessarians, the Svartic believe in animism, though of a different flavor, rich in mythical creatures and legends.

As we move forward in this new era, let us not repeat the mistakes of the past. Let us not suck. Let us be awesome, now and forever. Let us be friends, now and forever. We are 1 world. We all depend on each other and are affected by each other. Let us be the best that we can be and always strive to be better than we are. Let us meet all of our challenges head-on. Let us do all of this and more. We are the human race. We are the human family. Let us love each other and not fight anymore. That is my wish: total pacifism.
