[Speyern]

National Overview

The Republic of Speyern was founded as a true republic (vote by all) in the wake of collapsing dictatorships due to rebellion, war, and economic implosion in these nations. Out of those ashes rose a nation that realized something, freedom is never free, and to protect it, one must be stronger than all his opponents, be it militarily, economically, or politically, if you are weak, you will fall. Because of this new way of thinking, immediately after the foundation of the nation and the ratification of the constitution, the government did two things, fortified the nations borders, by expanding into mountain regions and using other natural defenses, as well as adding extensive military defensive lines, and instating compulsory military service, with the motto: "If you aren't willing to fight for your country, leave." (more details about this in later posts.)

At first, this drove the nation into debt, especially when the government began to overhaul the infrastructure of the nation, building new roads, expanding old ones, and modernizing the airports and railroads. But once power was consolidated and the bank accounts of the old rulers and their treasuries were accessed, billions of Archs flowed through the government and helped to keep this debt in check until the improvements were finished and the citizen-soldiers were equipped. After this, the attention of the government immediately turned to the military. Emphasis has been placed on the Air Force and the Ground Force, while the naval force was left relatively under-funded until about ten years ago.

Now the Republic is strong, safe, and with the private industry beginning to pick up, a loyal populace, and a quick, efficient government. The future looks bright for The Republic.

Total Current population is 322 million, 123,600,000 of which live in major cities, the rest living in smaller towns or rural farming/fishing communities. Or on dedicated military bases.

The military of Speyern is a powerful military machine, consisting of the Air Force, Ground Force, and the Naval Force, in order from most heavily funded to least. The military is designed to do a lot with a little, while at the same time bring an overwhelming amount of force upon the enemy. Much of the equipment and funding for the military was taken from the treasuries, bank accounts and military bases of the old nations that used to make up the region Speyern now occupies.

The Ground Forces consist of the Armored Corps, Infantry Corps, and the humanitarian units also fall under it's jurisdiction. The force's tactics rely heavily on cooperation with the Air Force, who uses paratroopers to drop behind a localized enemy front, secure landing zone's for the Ground force's helicopter infantry to open up holes in the enemy line for the blitzing armored and infantry divisions to smash any enemy resistance.

The Air Force is made up of two main forces, the conventional air force (fixed wing aircraft, attack+transport helicopters) and the Airborne. The Airborne Divisions are similar to the United States Marine Corps both in role and in prestige. These men are designed to support invasions by dropping just behind the enemies first line of defense after special forces/preliminary bombardment/electronic warfare eliminates anti-air capabilities in the area. after this has been achieved, the paratrooper planes fly in low and fast towards their targets, escorted by fighters and electronic warfare units (radar, communications jamming), drop their troops, along with jeeps, heavy anti-aircraft/tank launchers and light armored vehicles. Once on the ground, the infantry generally work in 5 man teams, some linking up with the light armor and anti-air/tank units. The Conventional Air Force functions much the same as any other would.

The Naval Force is a growing part of Speyern's military, especially now that Speyern has consolidated it's power and is looking to get more involved in the world around it, which requires the use of naval forces. Currently, the navy operates 5 main line battle groups (missile cruisers, destroyers, etc, in other words, they actually fight other ships directly.) 2 carrier battle groups (aircraft carrier and it's escorts) 3 marine battle groups (amphibious invasion forces, still under incremental expansion) and 2 coast guard groups (self explanatory).

The Special Forces or Assault Infantry are, unlike other nations, commanded under their own branch. These men are the multi-purpose, highly trained, and professional troops that are always ready to deploy in the even of an emergency. When the government calls 991, the special forces are the ones to answer. The special forces are known simply as assault infantry. They can deploy to any area, in any situation, and still fight effectively. The total fighting strength of the special forces is maintained at the top 25,000 men is Speyern's military. Often these men are deployed, even before hostilities officially begin, to observe, gather intelligence, and to be ready to destroy valuable targets before the beginning of an invasion, such as radar stations, railroads, manufacturing facilities etc.

The logistics task forces are similar to the United State's army corps of engineers. They are responsible for building military bases, supervising infrastructure buildup, and military manufacturing. They are also under their own command structure.

The military is designed for 3 things, adaptability, efficiency, and strength of arms. In other words, they are designed to handle any situation quickly and with overwhelming force, to defeat the enemy before it has a chance to muster it's full military strength.

Ground Force

The Ground Forces are mostly equipped with modernized versions of older equipment inherited from the old nations of the area, although some units have begun switching to newer equipment, most of this modernization is still taking place in the Airforce and Special Forces.

Ground Force command structure

Divisions are made up of Five task forces of 5,000 men (25,000 men total) and these task forces are divided into 200 platoons of 25 men, and those are divided into 5 squads of five men. In an armored division, each platoon is made up of 2 tanks, and 3 IFVs, while in an infantry division, each platoon is made up of one HMMWV and 2 trucks carrying supplies and 10 men to each truck.

Formal uniforms are not currently worn by the military as it is seen as an unneeded expense.

Air Force

The Air Force is the pride of Speyern's conventional military. Taking up fully 40% of Speyern's military budget, and being the center of any offensive or defensive strategy. With bases in most of the major cities and many more around the nation, the Air Force is able to deploy most anywhere in the world to meet a crisis with massive firepower, special forces, or even drop paratroopers in a flashpoint within 18 hours.

Fighter Divisions

As with all other divisions, there are 25,000 men. 5,000 men, and 200 fighters to a task force, using 25 men to maintain and guard each fighter as it is on the ground, any man that is not flying a plane is either manning anti aircraft guns/missiles or guarding as a soldier. (No extra military training required for this, as all military age men are fully-trained infantrymen anyways.) A fighter squadron is made up of five planes, and 125 men total.

Strategic Bomber Divisions

To each Division there is, as always, 25,000 men, these men are divided into 200 man teams that allows them to put all of the 125 bombers in a division in the air in a matter of 2 or 3 hours to bring massive firepower on any enemy city, army, or naval force before they can assault Speyern's shores. As with all of Speyern's air divisions, any unused men are either guarding the planes or manning air defenses.

Rockwell B-1 Lancer: Used in fast, low level attacks against enemy infantry, tanks, and entrenched positions, and then to speed away at supersonic speeds.

Standard Heavy Strategic Bomber

Tupolev Tu-95: Used in rare high-level strategic bombings, and in more common cruise-missile launches against enemy fleets or in advance of an amphibious invasion. In these attacks, 33,000 pounds of cruise-missiles are fired in a massive barrage miles away from enemy vessels, with the goal of annihilating the fleet's troop transports and aircraft carriers before they can deploy against Speyern. These attacks are usually on the small scale just because, while cruise or anti-ship missiles aren't to terribly expensive, they aren't cheap either, but once there is a large threat to Speyern, all necessary force is brought to bear.

Recon Divisions

These divisions operate hundreds of small UAVs to provide reconnaissance for an area for commanders, and greater battlefield awareness for ground units. They are also very useful for guiding cruise missiles. They also rarely deploy Predator UAVs armed with air to ground missiles to provide emergency air support to special forces, but this is rare due to the cost of predators.

Naval Force

The Naval Force of Speyern is a relatively new force in Speyern created recently as power was consolidated in Speyern's mainland and the need arose to protect Speyern's overseas territories and foreign interests. Currently Speyern's Naval Forces are divided into 2 Carrier battle groups (one modern, one older, inherited from one of the more powerful nations that was eventually came to make up Speyern.) 3 Main Line battlegroups, 5 Marine battle groups, and 4 Coast Guard battle groups (manned by reservisists.)

Carrier Battle Groups

Consist of one Carrier with a crew of 5000 permanent members which is supplemented by reservists when needed. The planes are not directly under Air Force jurisdiction due to the differences between the two Force's jobs.

Main Line Battle Groups

Operating 5 Cruisers, and 5 smaller destroyers as well as a handful of smaller vessels, these battle groups are typically tasked with escorting the carriers and supporting amphibious invasions. These units try to engage from a distance, using cruise missiles, torpedoes and long range cannons. If the fighting gets in close, they will typically try and disengage because of the relative small size of Speyern's Navy.

Marine Battle Groups

Operates 2 Amphibious assault carriers that deploy helicopters and rigid inflatable boats (used to transport individual squads in before the main force to establish a beachhead and to disable shore defenses, these men are trained in a similar manner to Speyern's Special Forces.) The ships carry a total of 2,500 men, 1000 crew members and pilots and 1,500 soldiers

Coast Guard Battle Groups

Operates a large number of cutters, speedboats, and occasionally missile frigates, in anti-drug trafficking, and anti-piracy operations.

Special Forces

The Special Forces' official designations are Wolf Packs. They are Speyern's Hunter-Killers, intelligence gatherers, and most importantly, the units tasked with destroying radar, anti-aircraft, and command and control units before an invasion. Wolf Packs are the best-trained and equipped men in the entire military, having being picked out from the top 5% of all the trainees in Speyern's population (compulsory millitary service mandates military training on weekends for about 6 hours a day from age 10, special forces are picked out at age 18, provided they are willing to join the main military instead of reserve.)

The Special Forces use mostly the same uniforms and equipment as reqular infantry units, the only differences being the amount of skill and training, and anything listed here.

VIII Homeland Defense

The men of Homeland Defense are used in the most critical of situations, where there is a direct threat to Speyern's homeland, or in a situation where the active-duty personnel are outnumbered and in need of immediate reinforcements. They are equipped the same as Ground Force units, and are usually outfitted with similar vehicles, and surplus vehicles if needed.

Thanks to Compulsory Military Service, there is always a large number of men in the Homeland Defense, and Speyern,because of this, is one of the best defended nations in the world.
