M551 Sheridan was a good Light Tank. Helluva better than PT-76s. But they were never used in good enviroment, in the way to which their were constructed in the first place.

Their Shillelagh missiles were used only in Persian Gulf, while in Vietnam soldiers hated them to be less resistant than M48s.

I'm looking to designing my first MBT in quite some time. As I'm relatively inexperienced in ground vehicle design, I was thinking of making a design similar to the Merkava MkIV; it seem adequate as a general-purpose tank, decent personnel protection, good countermeasures, decent main gun, and the ability to disembark soldiers as infantry support to help out in urban environments seems to be a big plus. Anything I could be doing better, or any big flaws to look out for?

You'd be hard pressed to get six guys in the hatch to disembark. The rear bay doors are used to expedite the reloading of ammunition stocks. Stowage is in the hull, in that rear bay. In order to take on "troops", ammunition must be unloaded. This leaves a Merkava vehicle with ten rounds loaded in the turret carousel, one in the gun and possibly a few more rounds strewn about the turret. Whilst leaving nearer thirty shells in the FOB.

The idea is primarily for the recovery of a tank crew. Assuming that a Merkava platoon is four vehicles, you can one tank that unloads its hull stowage to take on the crew of the destroyed vehicle to extract them. The remaining two vehicles stand on overwatch.
You now have two vehicles that cannot fight, and the entire platoon would probably have to withdraw. But, you can build a tank in two to six months. You can have four new tank crew in about twenty, twenty four years.

From pictures repeatedly posted in this thread and the prior edition (and probably the one before that), you could probably fit at maximum four people in the foetal position in that rear bay, and carry no ammunition. More people, and you're throwing them in the turret basket, where you've already got a gunner, loader and commander at work. It's certainly not at all suitable for the transportation of infantry, hence the existence of the Namer.

The primary bonuses of this layout are high crew survivability, and low turnaround time when reloading the vehicle at base. Or even in the field, if it comes to that. Both excellent upshots for a country in the position Israel will find itself in at war.
