Its assets were nationalized at the end of the Clone Wars, I think, but they were barely an entity by then. They designed their crappy war toys looong before that.

Two fighters that completely outclassed everything those rebels could throw at them.


Hell, if you read the comics and the EU and the like, there's quite a few exceptional pilots in the Imperial Navy.

Audiences in the late 70s wanted to see their heroes destroy the bad guys.
