Placing your entire army on a wide open and giving them the choice of either using their artillery or staying shielded and passively waiting until the droids passed their shield and got too close for their artillery is not what I'd call competent, myself.

It was a disturbingly traditional form of warfare, yes. Rumour has it that real warfare actually is more horrifying than picturesque, and it is not as if we go to the movies to truly question human nature.

The practical - and still dramatically fancy - approach would be showing them employ guerrilla tactics, lead the droids into swamps and ambush them. But then, I suppose it'd feel like an Ewok rehash.

I mean, seriously? Massive-scale conventional wars? That's a step back into 3000BCE - 500AD, when the wars lasted around ten years.


I'd expect most of the warfare in Star Wars to be conducted with either COIN operations, or through absolutely colossal ships like The Executor with WMDs, wiping away the topography of worlds.
