It was a disturbingly traditional form of warfare, yes. Rumour has it that real warfare actually is more horrifying than picturesque, and it is not as if we go to the movies to truly question human nature.
The practical - and still dramatically fancy - approach would be showing them employ guerrilla tactics, lead the droids into swamps and ambush them. But then, I suppose it'd feel like an Ewok rehash.
