I know what the definition says, but it should be more about physical ability. Not just because something is an organized event.

Pie eating contests are organized events, which can leave one feeling physically exhausted at the end of it, but it is not a sport.

Here is an example.

To me track racing is a sport, but Horse Racing is not (well except for the horses).

So, the Red Bull Air Race is a sport?

Because that's all I really care about.

Have they started their new season yet? I've only been catching it here and there.

IMHO: ANY form of motor racing is a sport.

Althougth I love watching it, it is not a sport.

It requires physical ability, notably dexterity, and the ability to withstand g-forces without getting disoriented or weak.

Something that I doubt most football players could do.

Under the definition which I've already posted, motorsport is indeed a sport, because it fits the requirement laid out in said definition.

Note, the definition says "Skillful physical activity", it doesn't say how much a person has to physically exert themselves, just that the physical activity has to be skillful.

The concentration involved in playing chess competitively increases your metabolism, blood pressure, heart rate and adrenalin amounts. That's why it is so exhausting and you feel so tired.
In that sense it could be classed as a sport. However, the average person has a problem calling something a sport when both players are sitting still...On the other side of the coin...how about the players who get so emotional they stand up and slam the clock or their chair to the floor? That is definitely physical

I agree for European auto racing, but here in the states, it's just a bunch of cars making a four-hour-long left turn.

You want to make NASCAR really interesting? Make the track into a figure 8. Then the real fun begins.

Then pie eating is a sport, typing is a sport, getting dressed quickly in the morning is a sport. As long as you compete with someone else.

Such a nonsensical stretch of the definition to render it useless.

And since we're bantering around definitions, I tend to try to avoid wikipedia and focus on a more established dictionary, namely Oxford's

an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others

Mere skill does not a sport make.

It would just open the floodgates if Chess was defined as a sport. What about poker? War (the card game...and the actual thing I guess...)? Rock Paper Scissors? However competitive chess may be, for it to be a sport would require essentially anything with competition to become a sport, which would make the word meaningless.

Demolition Derbys are normally in large dirt arenas.

Physical stamina and endurance also fits under physical exertion. A person with low endurance and stamina cannot complete a 500 mile race. It's also a team sport since you have Racing team as well as the Pit crew, racing against other racing teams and other pit crews and drivers. Even under your definition, motorsport is a sport.

Just as much as Starcraft is a sport. They both require strategy, both can by stressing to newcomers and both require nearly no physical action other then getting Cheetos, taking a leak, and moving your arms a bit.
