Norjagen wrote:In a free society, it is up to those who would stop people from owning things to show why there is an overwhelming reason to prevent people from owning something. We do not (yet) live in a marxist society where the government bureaucrats decide what we "need", as in "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need".

Thus far, I have not seen a single convincing argument for the banning of semi-automatic sporting rifles. I don't have to justify why I "need" one. Rather, it is up to those who would take them away to articulate exactly why they "need" me to NOT own one.

It's certainly not a matter of preventing murders. According to the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Statistics, (a nonpartisan unbiased report that the FBI releases periodically) and more specifically their Expanded Homicide Data Table #8, there were a total of 12,664 murders committed in 2011 (the last year reported.) Of those, ALL RIFLES accounted for 323 total murders, or 2.55%. Of those, semi-automatic rifles are only a subset, and AR-15s are an even narrower subset of the semi-auto category.

For comparison, 6,220 (49.1%) people were murdered with handguns, 1,694 (12.8%) were murdered with knives or cutting instruments, 728 (5.74%) were murdered Personal weapons (hands, fists, feet, etc.) and 496 (3.91%) were murdered with blunt objects.

LINK TO SOURCE

AR-15s are currently the best selling rifle in the United States and, possibly, the most popular firearm overall. Its popularity is driven by such factors as its looks, notoriety, ergonomics, low recoil, accuracy and the ease with which it is customized. They are in common use by target shooters, hunters, competitors, collectors, and home defenders. There are dozens if not hundreds of manufacturers building AR-pattern rifles, and you are just as likely to find it in someone's gun closet as any other firearm. Perhaps more so in most cases.

And yet, despite its widespread popularity, these rifles are used to commit only a tiny percentage of crimes on any given year. Though they've been used in a number of high-profile shootings, such shootings are a statistical anomaly, and while tragic, do not provide a representative sample of the overall trend of violence in this country. The numbers show that if you are going to be murdered, the weapon used is HIGHLY unlikely to be an AR-15.

Speaking of violence trends, lets look at the trend of DECREASING violence in the United States.

Again using the FBI as a source, LINK TO SOURCE let's look at the violent crime states over the last 20 years.

In 1992, we had a violent crime rate of 757.7 per 100,000 citizens, and a murder rate of 9.3 per 100,000. Those numbers have dropped steadily over time until in 2011 (the last year reported) they had reached 386.3 and 4.7, respectively.
That's a total reduction of 49% in violent crime and 49.4% in murder over the past two decades.

So we can plainly see that violent crime and murder are on a sharp decline in this country, and yet, there are those out there who are trying to make it sound as if we're in the midst of an epidemic, and that we need to cede our rights "for the good of the children."

"For the good of the children." Of course. After all, if you don't support these measures, you're a TERRORIST baby-killing psychopath. ...Sound familiar at all? It's called fear-mongering. More generally, it's called manipulation.

If those who have leveraged the deaths of the children in Newtown to further their own agenda on gun control put the same level of enthusiasm and energy behind, say... improving school security, or taking a closer look at crisis protocols for these situations, or otherwise attempting to make our schools safer places, we might MIGHT actually see a reduction in these sorts of tragedies.

If they put their efforts behind improving the poverty levels and unemployment levels in their communities, or improving education in their problem cities, they might see a reduction in overall violent crime in those areas.

But no, they say. If we staff our schools with police officers, they're just "funnel children, especially minorities, out of school and into the corrections system. That's unconstitutional."

And, as we all know, there's no fame or glory in slowly improving the quality of living in your district. No, these politicians need to do something RIGHT NOW! It has to be something VISIBLE! DRAMATIC! The people need to see that they're DOING SOMETHING! LOOK!

And so, they're pushing policies that are unenforceable without infringing on basic civil liberties.
Policies that invade the already-dwindling privacy we enjoy.
Policies that contribute to the steady erosion our rights have seen since the beginning of the war on terror.
Policies that will do NOTHING to control violent crime or deter mass shootings.
Policies that we've ALREADY TRIED IN THE PAST, and which we allowed to sunset, since they didn't serve their intended purpose.

...But they feel good. At least, they feel good for people whose rights aren't on the chopping block. That's what matters, I suppose. They feel good, and they're good career moves, if they can spin them in a positive light.
Hail Satan!

In a comment that would surely have led to any Republican being metaphorically reduced to atramentous rubble, Barack Obama lauded a female attorney general by the name of Kamala Harris for being "brilliant and...dedicated...tough…by far, the best looking attorney general."

What I want to know is, what will the consequences of his remarks be? Will they equal the outrages that ensued after Romney's binder gaffe or the "war on women"? No man should ever judge a professional woman based on looks. I hope the media will take him to task for this and give him hell.

Clicking on this thread, I thought that I was about to be treated to a list of unsolicited movie links.
