What do other countries think of the USA?

Postby Schnubert » Wed Jan 19, 2011 6:04 pm

The farthest I've been from the USA is Canada, which isn't much of a change in scenery, so I wonder what other countries think about the USA. In all the movies foreigners are portrayed as thinking this is the greatest place ever, while journalists say everyone else hates us. Well, what do you think of the USA?

Most countries hate the US, because they're jealous of their power and wealth, much like many nations hated the British during their hey day for basically the same thing, and so on and so forth.

From what i know of from people i know from the forums of the DMFA webcomic it seems really bad, even compared to Slovakia
The worst thing, not that they have told me it is bad, it's from some things they mentioned as aside.

It's just a more boring, more stupid version of Puerto Rico. It sucks, and I really want to go back.

... Hence why I said it's a more boring VERSION of Puerto Rico.

There's a relation between the two.

Puerto Rico is EXCITING and COLORFUL and BEAUTIFUL. And it isn't fucking freezing during the day and night. I left the life I had there to start all over again in The Great Catch-22 of 'Merica.

I still hate it here, and I REALLY want to go back.

Well, the news is always going to be bad news. Like everyone saying 2010 was awful. I loved 2010! Culturally, it was a great year, with Adventure Time and The Social Network and whatnot. I try not to let the news and politics get me down. I just ask, "How does this effect me personally?". Also, it depends on what state you live in. I live in North Carolina in the Triangle, which is an area that has more Ph. Ds per capita than anywhere else in the world. All of my friends' parents are doctors or some variant, and it's a very nice place. But I can imagine how someone living in Arizona might feel differently.

Well, I'm Canadian, and we have those of us up here who hate America and those who don't care.

On the other hand, I have met a few people in Yorkshire who thought that Seattle was in Manitoba. So, I guess you can't count some UK opinions...

They don't hate America as a country, just the American people for their ignorance/idiocy sometimes displayed.
Example: I was told about when a bunch of German tourists wen't over to America, and an American person asked them how they got there. The Germans told them they came across the "atlantic bridge" for a laugh. The American genuinely believed them.

It probably doesn't help you're constantly stereotyped as idiots, and that nobody particularly likes US intervention in everything, acting like world police.

However all countries have their bad points, and I'm sure America is a lovely place and is full of interesting people to meet. I'll look forward to visiting it.

Of course if i look at it that way i'd say 2010 was also quite a year. I don't believe you can say that for 2011 globally speaking. Quite interesting we start a new year with civil unrest and riots and chaos in the world. I do enjoy America but sometimes certain things can just get out of hand.

When I was a Boy Scout and attended the World Jamboree a few years back, we were generally well-liked by most countries represented (we're talking 100+ countries). The French absolutely despised us for some reason though.

It's alright. Depends where you go I suppose. nice beaches and theme parks in Florida (10 year old memories here), fat load of nothing in Ohio (more recently)

I just don't think the travelling was entirely worth it. I'd rather see the rest of Europe, I can go there and back in a weekend

I hate Florida actually. I dislike hot climates. I plan on escaping to Iceland during vacation or anywhere that is colder for longer but still not in a terribly remote location. Modern yet Cold Climate is exactly what i'd enjoy.

Most of New England (especially New York)
North Carolina (not South Carolina, dear God)
Virginia
Parts of California
Texas (just don't watch the news)
Illinois
Washington
Wyoming (very, very beautiful)
Certain areas of Nevada
Oregon
Louisiana
Hawaii
The non-City parts of Alaska

Personally, I really don't mind most Americans. I mind the fact that most of them haven't heard of New Zealand until I mention Lord of the Rings, King Kong or Flight of the Concords. Though, sometimes, I do think that the US is the best case of the "blind leading the blind".

The place i hate the most in the US?
Pennsylvania..

Everytime i go there i just feel this emptyness inside of me. So many freaking trees but they aren't even those kind of trees that you say show natural beauty. Their thin and tall yet just bore me to death. Unfortunately i live only a few miles from it :P. Oh and MA has absolutely no good radio stations :D
