The following year, Bowers' family had her declared legally dead, and in 2008 her inheritance was divided among surviving family members, on the condition that they would repay it if it was wrongly distributed, the York Daily Record reported. Neither Bowers nor her attorney has indicated whether she will be seeking repayment of the money.
$100K would sure have helped get their plumbing in order ...
Commenting more generally: it seems as though the mother and father thought their relationship was so illegal that they had to hide the kids to conceal it. A small crime leads to a greater one (depriving the kids of education and outside contact is pretty bad in my book, worse than unsafe living conditions even) but the tragedy of it is that them being parents together isn't even a crime in the first place. Perhaps someone who disapproved of their relationship lied to them way back then ...
Or more likely they were concealing some crime which they haven't been charged with yet. Perhaps they started having sex before she was 18 (or 16?)
